EV Battery Summer Care Tips: The temperature has crossed 45°C in many cities of India. In such weather, along with humans, the battery of electric vehicle i.e. EV is also greatly affected. Many people complain that in summer the range of their EV suddenly reduces, charging becomes slow and the battery gets heated quickly. EV batteries work best at a certain temperature. When the outside temperature rises too much, the battery has to work extra hard to keep itself cool. But if some important things are kept in mind, then excellent performance can be achieved from the EV even in summer. What causes EV battery to go down quickly in summer?

Lithium-ion batteries are used in electric vehicles. These batteries are not able to work to their full capacity in very hot or very cold weather. In summer, when the temperature reaches around 40 degrees, the heat inside the battery starts increasing. At such times, the battery management system of the car starts the cooling system to protect the battery. This system keeps the battery cool, but it consumes extra electricity. This is the reason why the driving range starts decreasing. Apart from this, if you drive at high speed, do fast charging frequently or park the car in the sun, then there is more pressure on the battery.

Why does EV range reduce in summer?

In summer, many types of pressure increases on the battery of EV, due to which the range of the vehicle starts appearing less. The battery heats up quickly in extreme heat, so to keep it at a safe temperature the car’s cooling system works continuously and this consumes additional electricity. At the same time, running AC also increases battery consumption. If the vehicle is driven at high speed or fast charging is done repeatedly, the temperature of the battery increases further, which affects its efficiency. For this reason, sometimes the EV covers less distance than before, but this is not a sign of any fault but a normal effect of hot weather.

1. If you want to keep your EV’s battery in good condition for a long time, then it is very important to keep some important things in mind. Always avoid parking the car in strong sunlight and try to keep it in a shady place or parking, so that the battery does not get too hot.

2. Apart from this, instead of very fast charging, use normal or Level-2 charging and avoid repeatedly charging the battery till 100 percent. Experts believe that it is best to keep the battery between 20 percent and 80 percent.

3. Do not start charging immediately after a long drive, let the battery cool down a bit first, also drive smoothly, avoid sharp acceleration and high speed, as this puts extra strain on the battery.

4. Maintaining correct tire pressure, keeping weight low and using pre-conditioning feature when needed also helps in increasing battery life.
