The change of power in West Bengal after 15 years not only changed the government, but also brought to the center stage those five big issues which had become more complicated instead of being resolved during Mamata Banerjee’s rule. In this election, BJP has dominated the development issues by winning 207 seats. These are the same issues which were increasing in Bengal for the last 15 years. Now there is hope that the situation will change. Let us understand these issues, BJP’s promises and 5 major benefits of ‘double engine government’.

1. Illegal immigration and demographic change

• Situation in Mamata Raj: TMC continued to be accused of Muslim appeasement regarding Bangladesh and Rohingya infiltration. The border districts are the biggest proof of this. Border districts like Malda, Murshidabad and North Dinajpur saw a huge increase in Muslim population due to illegal migration from Bangladesh. In some areas this population increased to 55% to 60%.
• BJP’s promise: Identifying illegal infiltrators and expelling them and strengthening border security.
• Advantage of double engine: With the policies of the Center and the State being unified, border fencing, implementation of NRC and strict action against infiltration will now be possible without political hindrances.

2. Law and order and women’s safety

• Situation in Mamata Raj: Issues like RG Kar Medical College scandal and Sandeshkhali tarnished the image of the state at the national level. Women made insecurity a big issue in the elections. Rekha Patra, who became the face of the Sandeshkhali movement, was made the BJP candidate from Hingalganj seat and RG Kar victim’s mother Ratna Debnath was made the candidate from Panihati seat. In the election results, Rekha Patra won her seat by 5,421 votes, while Ratna Debnath won by a margin of 28,836 votes.
• BJP’s promise: Implementing ‘UP Model’ in the state and curbing the hooliganism of TMC workers.
• Advantage of double engine: Better coordination between central agencies and state police will curb crime. The peaceful voting (except for some violence) after the deployment of more than 2,40,000 central forces in the elections is an example of this.

3. Corruption and syndicate culture

• Situation in Mamata Raj: Supreme Court canceled more than 25,000 appointments in the teacher appointment scam. Cut-money and syndicate had become a part of the political system. Critics allege that these syndicates flourish under the patronage of the ruling party, thereby promoting corruption and lawlessness.
• BJP’s promise: End all syndicates as soon as they come to power and take strict action against corruption.
• Advantage of double engine: With full support to central agencies like ED and CBI at the state level, investigation of big scams will speed up and the system will become transparent.

4. Unemployment and migrating industry

• Situation in Mamata Raj: Youth unemployment and migration remained a big issue due to Tata Nano, opposition violence and bad environment for investors. According to PLFS (October-December 2025), Bengal’s unemployment rate is 3.6%, which is lower than the national average of 4.8%. At the same time, in some other reports this rate has been said to increase to 10.6%.
• BJP’s promise: Restarting closed industries, bringing investment and guaranteeing Rs 3,000 per month in the accounts of youth and women.
• Advantage of double engine: The industrial policies of the Center will be directly applicable to Bengal. The business world will get a stable policy environment, due to which employment opportunities will increase rapidly.

5. Incomplete benefit of welfare schemes

• Situation in Mamata Raj: Central schemes like Awas, Ujjwala and Kisan Samman were often not implemented at the state level, leaving people deprived.
• BJP’s promise: To ensure 100% implementation of all the schemes of the Centre.
• Advantage of double engine: With coordination between the Center and the State, the schemes will reach the people directly, due to which development will happen at double the speed.

It is worth noting that BJP got 38% votes in Bengal in 2021. This increased to 45.64% in 2026, while TMC fell from 48% to 40.80%. This vote has gone in favor of guaranteeing development and stability. In such a situation, the biggest question is whether BJP will be able to fulfill these promises? Only time will answer this, but with the government of the same party at the Center and the state, the policy tussle will end and the decision making process will be faster. This is the reason why experts believe that ‘double engine government’ is the real guarantee to complete these five incomplete issues of Bengal.
