What is required is talent, not degree.

There is absolutely no requirement of any special or major educational qualification to become a cheerleader in IPL. To enter this field, no one cares how much you have studied or what degree you have. Here the main basis of selection is your dancing skills, physical fitness and your age rather than your studies. Generally, only girls between the age of 18 to 30 years come into this profession, who have a good understanding of dance and performing arts.

No official course but training is necessary

If you think that to become a cheerleader one has to do a special course from a recognized college, then you are wrong. There is no fixed or government course for this profession. However, to become a cheerleader, you have to master different styles of dance like hip-hop, jazz and contemporary. Therefore, high-level training from professional dance schools or talent academies is most useful in this work. Your skill is considered your biggest qualification.

Who recruits them?

IPL cheerleaders are not recruited directly by BCCI or IPL teams. Big event management and talent agencies work for this. These companies contact professional dancing agencies around the world. Interested artists are required to submit a professional video of their dancing and performance. After this, live auditions are organized by the companies, in which the final selection is done only after testing the performance, confidence in front of the camera and stage presence.

The more glamorous the job of a cheerleader looks, the more hard work is hidden behind it. A match lasts for about 3 to 4 hours and during this, whenever a big shot is hit or a wicket falls, they have to immediately come on stage and dance with full energy. This requires amazing fitness and stamina. Even a little fatigue can affect their performance. Therefore, it is very essential for them to be physically fit and practice continuously.

How did cheerleading start?

The roots of cheerleading are not in India but in America. It started in the year 1898 at the University of Minnesota, where an organized method was adopted to increase the enthusiasm of the audience. The interesting thing is that in the initial times only men used to do this work. By the turn of the 20th century, women’s participation in it increased and it became a professional art. This trend came to India in the year 2008 with the first season of IPL, which combined cricket and entertainment.
