Online Mobile Games In India News: New government rules for the online gaming sector are now going to be implemented. The ‘Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Rules 2026’ will be effective from May 1, 2026, which will see a major change in the entire structure of online gaming in the country.

These rules have been prepared under the law made in 2025 and their main objective is to prevent economic, mental and social harm caused by online money games as well as to promote safe and legal gaming platforms.

Real money and e-sports will be separate

After the implementation of the new rules, clarity will now be brought about the nature of every online game. Under a set process, it will be determined which game is a ‘money game’ and which falls within the scope of general social game or e-sports.

In this process, it will be seen whether money is involved in the game or not, whether there is financial benefit on winning or not, what is the revenue model of the company and how the rewards are given. As per the rules, this entire investigation process will be completed as far as possible within 90 days and its result will be recorded in the form of an official order.

Online Gaming Authority of India will monitor

Under these rules, a new regulatory body ‘Online Gaming Authority of India’ is being formed which will monitor the entire online gaming sector. This organization will work under MeitY and its headquarters will be in Delhi.

It will be developed as a digital office which will work on releasing the list of games, investigating complaints, issuing guidelines and enforcing the rules in collaboration with various agencies.

Registration system implemented but not mandatory for every game

Under the new rules, the system of registration for online games is also being implemented, although it will not be mandatory for every game. The government will require registration only for those games where the risk to users is high, where large amounts of money are traded or which are offered as e-sports.

On receipt of registration, the concerned game or platform will be given a digital certificate and a unique registration number which will remain valid for a maximum of 10 years. It has also been made clear that no money game will be recognized as e-sports.

Companies will have to implement important features

In these rules, priority has been given to the safety of users. Under this, gaming companies will have to implement several mandatory security measures, which include age verification, setting time limits, parental controls, facility to lodge complaints, counseling support and monitoring of fair play.

Companies will also have to ensure that all these features are available to the users in a transparent manner and they are informed about it in advance. Its objective is to protect especially children and vulnerable group of users from the negative effects of online gaming.

Right to appeal within 30 days

To resolve the complaints of users, a two-tier system has been implemented in the new rules. At the first level, the concerned gaming company itself will have to resolve the complaint. If the user is not satisfied with the company’s response or does not get a timely solution, he can appeal to the regulatory authority within 30 days. Even after this, if the matter is not resolved then the final appeal can be made to the Secretary of MeitY where efforts will be made to take a decision within 30 days.

Action and penalty decided within 90 days for breaking rules

Under the new rules, a provision has also been made for strict action against the violating companies. The investigation process will be completed through digital medium and it is targeted to be completed within 90 days.

While deciding the penalty, it will be seen how much profit the company earned from the violation of rules, how much loss it suffered to the users, what was the seriousness of the mistake and whether this mistake has been made repeatedly.

It seems that the government does not intend to ban online gaming completely but instead wants to make it safe and transparent by bringing it within the ambit of rules so that the trust of the users is maintained and the industry can also progress in an orderly manner.

The IPL season proves not only to cricket, but also for India’s banking system. Every year the IPL has illegal betting of more than ₹ 8.3 lakh crore, in which cryptocurrency and fake accounts are used extensively. Fantasy Sports Platforms such as Dream11 and Probo increase so much load on UPI that it has become common to have a server crash. NPCI and RBI are constantly monitoring it. VUNET Systems such as AI-Tech Startups are monitoring more than 1 billion transactions daily.

Action is being taken against gaming firms violating rules with the introduction of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence (DGGI) has tightened several foreign online gaming firms related to the theft of GST.

This action is being taken to deal with illegal gaming business. The Finance Ministry has reported that DGGI has targeted bank accounts associated with illegal gaming platforms. About four crore rupees have been seized along with attaching about 2,000 accounts. Apart from this, more than Rs 122 crore has been attached temporarily by freezing 392 bank accounts linked to UPI IDS of foreign gaming websites. This action has been taken in collaboration with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center and the National Payments Corporation of India.

Many Indian citizens have also been revealed in this action who were running online gaming platforms from abroad. These people were using illegal 166 accounts related to these platforms. These accounts have been blocked. Three suspects have also been arrested in this case. Other people and networks are being investigated in this. Online money gaming is taxed at 28 percent. All firms related to this business need to register for GST and follow the rules. However, many foreign gaming firms were violating it and avoiding paying tax. IPL has increased rapidly during IPL over the years.

It is learned that DGGI has targeted more than 700 foreign firms associated with online gaming, betting and gambling. In this action, 357 illegal or not followed by foreign gaming websites have been blocked. For this, DGGI is working together with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Earlier, the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center (I4C) and Telecom Department (DOT) blocked at least 17,000 WhatsApp accounts of foreign hackers. Its goal is to destroy foreign criminal networks and increase the digital security of the country. <!--
