During a podcast interview, Imran Masood was asked a question about the attacks on Israel on October 7 in 2023. During the conversation, when he was told that Hamas was a terrorist organization, Masood retorted and asked, ‘Was Bhagat Singh also a terrorist?’

When he was asked whether any comparison could be made between Bhagat Singh and Hamas, he replied ‘yes’ and said, ‘They are fighting for their land. Bhagat Singh was also fighting for his land.

‘Hamas is fighting for freedom’

Masood further said, ‘Bhagat Singh made the supreme sacrifice for his land. Israel is about to occupy. For you, Hamas is a terrorist organization, but I believe that Hamas is fighting for its freedom. You are looking at the 250 people taken hostage by them (Hamas), but you are not looking at the 100,000 people who have been killed by Israel.

BJP’s sharp counterattack

BJP has strongly attacked Congress on this statement of Imran Masood. Party’s national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawala wrote on Twitter, ‘Boti boti Imran Masood compares Hamas with Bhagat Singh ji. This is an insult to all freedom fighters.

He further said, ‘Leftists and Congress people glorify terrorist groups to make the Gandhi family look great and belittle all our heroes. Earlier, Kanhaiya Kumar had compared Bhagat Singh ji with Lalu Yadav! This is not the first time! Congress has insulted Bhagat Singh ji before also! He had done the same with Chandrashekhar Azad ji, Savarkar ji, Patel ji, Birsa Munda ji.

Shaheed bhagat singh: Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh is honored not only in India but also in Pakistan. He was born on 28 September 1907 in Banga village of Lailpur (now Faisalabad, Pakistan). He fought against the British and swung on the gallows on 23 March 1931.

Actually, India and Pakistan were not divided at that time, so Bhagat Singh is considered the hero of the freedom struggle of both countries.

Bhagat Singh and Pakistan have a deep relationship
Bhagat Singh was born in Lailpur (now Faisalabad). He did his schooling at DAV Senior Secondary School in Lahore. He enrolled in Lahore’s National College and joined revolutionary activities.

Bhagat Singh’s revolution in Lahore
In 1928, British police officer planned to kill James Scott, but accidentally shot Sanders. He had a deep connection with Lohari Mandi, DAV College and Dayal Singh College Hostel in Lahore. After the assassination of Sanders, he ran away and ran many places in Lahore.

Jinnah defended Bhagat Singh
According to Lallantop’s report, Bhagat Singh and Batukeshwar Dutt were arrested after throwing bombs in the Central Assembly. His case was run in a biased manner in the court, against which Jinnah lodged a protest. In September 1929, Jinnah said in Parliament, “A person who goes on hunger strike cannot be a common criminal.” However, the government issued a special order (ordinance) and sentenced them to death without appearance.

Bhagat Singh honored in Pakistan
Shadman Chowk in Lahore is the same place where Bhagat Singh was hanged. In 2012, there was a demand to name it “Shaheed Bhagat Singh Chowk”, but it was not possible due to opposition from fundamentalists. Every year on 23 March, people gather here to pay tribute.

How did Hussainiwala become part of India?
The bodies of Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru were brought from Lahore to Hussainiwala overnight and cremated. After the partition, Hussainiwala went to Pakistan. In 1961, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru gave 12 villages to Pakistan to include it in India. Today, Hussainiwala National Martyr’s Memorial remains.

Civil society fighting for Bhagat Singh in Pakistan
Shadman Chowk in Lahore has now been named ‘Bhagat Singh Chowk’. This change is the result of Pakistan’s long battle of civil society. However, the radical organization Jamaat-ud-Dawa was strongly opposed to this. Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation has filed a petition in the Lahore High Court. He has appealed to declare Bhagat Singh innocent in the Sanders murder case. The Foundation wants the Government of Pakistan to provide national honors to Bhagat Singh. The petition said that Bhagat Singh fought for the independence of undivided India.

Opposition of fundamentalists and support of public
Terrorist and radical organizations have been opposing the support of Bhagat Singh, but the big section in Pakistan considers Bhagat Singh as his hero even today. The Shiwil Society and many intellectuals are raising their voice in his honor.
