Bihar is in the grip of cold and fog has slowed down the pace of life. Meanwhile, the Meteorological Center has predicted dense fog in many districts till January 7. According to the Meteorological Department, there is every possibility of dense fog in northern and north-eastern districts like West Champaran, East Champaran, Sitamarhi, Madhubani, Supaul, Araria and Kishanganj. It is expected to have an adverse impact on road transport, rail and air services.

These districts were kept in alert or watch category

The Meteorological Department has placed Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga and Samastipur in ‘alert’ or ‘watch’ category, where the effect of fog along with cold can be seen. However, the situation is not considered very serious. According to meteorologists, due to weakening of westerly wind speed and increase in humidity in the atmosphere, fog can last for a long time.

No warning for these districts

At present, no warning has been issued in the districts of South and Central Bihar – Patna, Nalanda, Jehanabad, Begusarai, Sheikhpura, Munger, Bhagalpur, Banka and Jamui. These have been kept in the ‘Green Zone’.

Yellow alert issued here

‘Yellow alert’ has been implemented in Gaya, Nawada and surrounding areas, where the impact of cold can be felt relatively more. In view of the cold weather in Rohtas, Aurangabad, Kaimur and Bhojpur, people have been advised to remain alert.

Gaya recorded lowest temperature of 5.5 degree Celsius

Today the lowest minimum temperature of 5.5 degrees Celsius was recorded in Gaya. In other districts the minimum temperature has been recorded between 6 to 12 degrees Celsius. In the last 24 hours, a drop in minimum temperature has been recorded in many areas. The Meteorological Department has clarified that cold and foggy conditions may persist in the coming days, hence people need to take necessary precautions.

Amidst the ongoing cold wave in Bihar, the Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for extremely dense fog in many parts of the state and has advised people to remain alert. The Meteorological Department said that there was an outbreak of cold wave in Bihar on Friday and the minimum temperature was recorded below 10 degrees Celsius in many districts.

Where is the coldest place?

The department said that Aurangabad in the state and Sabaur in Bhagalpur were the coldest places in the state, where the minimum temperature was recorded at 7.4 degrees Celsius.

Temperature of different districts

It said that after this, 7.6 degrees were recorded in Gaya of the state, 8.9 degrees each in Bhagalpur and Sheikhpura, 9 degrees each in Valmiki Nagar and Dehri of West Champaran, 9.3 degrees in Jehanabad and 9.5 degrees in Saharsa.

The department said that orange alert has been issued for dense to very dense fog in East Champaran, West Champaran, Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, Sitamarhi, Shivhar, Muzaffarpur, Vaishali, Patna, Bhojpur, Buxar, Kaimur, Rohtas, Aurangabad, Arwal and Jehanabad districts.

People advised to take precautions

The Meteorological Department said that due to fog, visibility remained very low in various parts of the state on Friday. An official of IMD, Patna, said that people have been advised to take necessary precautions especially in the morning and the concerned authorities have been asked to remain alert as road, rail and air traffic may be affected due to low visibility.

According to the Meteorological Department, the severe cold wave is likely to continue in many parts of the state till December 29. Due to lack of continuous sunlight, abnormal drop in day temperature is being recorded, due to which one has to resort to bonfire and warm clothes even during the day. Experts believe that slight improvement in the weather is possible only after December 30, before that there is little hope of relief.

In the second week of December, the effect of cold has started becoming visible in almost all the states of North India. A huge drop in temperature was also recorded in Bihar. Especially the morning has started getting very cold. In such a situation, Patna administration has decided to change the class timings to provide convenience to the school students up to class 8th.

The timing for children studying up to 8th in all private and government schools of the district including pre-schools, Anganwadi centers of Patna has been changed from 8.30 am. Classes will now continue till 4.00 pm. The new timing has been implemented from Thursday, December 11, which will currently continue till next Thursday, December 18.

It is important to pay attention to children’s health

Bihar district administration has issued a notification giving this information. Also, it is written on the post, “In view of the possibility of adverse impact on the health and life of children due to extreme cold weather and low temperature conditions in the district, the District Magistrate, Patna has suspended the educational activities up to class 8 in all private and government schools of the district including pre-school, Anganwadi centers from 11.12.2025 to 18.12.2025 from 08.30 AM to 04:00 PM. “Instructions have been given to operate only between 10:00 and 15:00.”

Cold is now slowly showing its effect in Bihar. There is chill due to falling temperature in the morning and evening. In most parts of Bihar including Patna, the minimum temperature has reached 9 to 14 degrees, while the average maximum temperature is 24 to 28 degrees.
