Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Duvvuri Subbarao has expressed serious concern over the growing freebie culture i.e. free facilities and cash promises during elections in India. He said in one of his articles that even though elections can be won through these free schemes, it does not strengthen the future of the country. Subbarao said that ‘distributing borrowed money is easy, but it does not create a nation.’

Competition of promises in elections
Subbarao gave the example of Bihar assembly elections and said that the election campaign had turned into a ‘competition of populist promises’. He said that the NDA government sent Rs 10,000 to the accounts of about 1.2 crore women during the election campaign, while the opposition alliance made big promises – Rs 30,000 to every woman and a government job in every household. According to him, the atmosphere during the elections was such that the political parties had completely forgotten the limits of economic responsibility and budget.

Freebie destroys influence and trust
The former governor says that when every party announces free schemes during elections, their influence gradually disappears. People start understanding that these promises are limited to elections only and are not necessarily fulfilled. He said- ‘When promises exceed limits, people stop trusting.’

Many states are burdened with financial burden
According to Subbarao, after implementing the election promises, many states have now started understanding the real value of this model. He said that the expenditure on social schemes of Andhra Pradesh is much more than estimated. Telangana is already facing huge financial pressure. Even in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the budget for other development works is falling short. He said that when a large part of the budget is spent on cash transfers, freebies and subsidies, investment on education, health, employment and infrastructure reduces.

Giving freebie by borrowing is the most dangerous
Subbarao’s biggest warning was that governments are borrowing to complete these schemes. He said- ‘Today’s expenses are becoming a burden on people’s tomorrow. The money given today will have to be repaid by future generations.

Politics silent due to fear
The former governor says that no political party in India wants to oppose the freebie culture because they fear that they will be called ‘anti-poor’. He says that this is not the problem of just one party but the weakness of the entire political system.

Called the freebie a ‘political failure’
Subbarao said that the free schemes are a way of acknowledging that the government has failed to provide employment, income and opportunities. He said, ‘It is easy to give money to people for today’s needs, but making them self-reliant is real development.’

need to make national rules
He suggested that a national framework should be created in India, which would decide how much amount the government can spend on free schemes. What can be announced before the elections and most importantly where will the money come from.

A dinner meeting was organized for the migrant leaders engaged in Bihar elections at the residence of BJP President JP Nadda. In this meeting, all the leaders were thanked for their contribution in Bihar elections. Apart from BJP President JP Nadda, Home Minister Amit Shah, National Organization General Secretary BL Santosh and all the leaders related to Bihar elections were present in the meeting.

Sources said that the Home Minister has said in this meeting that the historic victory of NDA in Bihar Assembly elections is not just a victory of one state but of the whole of India. He said that this victory of Bihar is the victory of the resolve of every Indian against those infiltrators who challenge the security and social structure of the country.

‘All five parties fought like five Pandavas’
The Home Minister further said that under the leadership of Modi ji, the unwavering love and trust of the people has continuously strengthened. The people of Bihar have wholeheartedly supported the pairing of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. He called it the result of NDA’s unity, collective power and the five parties fighting together like the five Pandavas.

The mantra of ‘wherever there is less, there is we’
According to sources, the Home Minister told the leaders that all the leaders have done the culmination of their hard work. Even 1 percent contribution in elections is big, but no leader should think that this victory has been achieved because of him because it brings pride. Your responsibility was not to contest elections but to play a role wherever there was less. We all have to be prepared for the battle of Bengal ahead. Always be in worker mode, duty can be imposed anywhere.

‘Now everyone has to be ready for Bengal’
The upcoming battle of Bengal was also discussed in the meeting. The Home Minister said that now everyone has to be ready for Bengal and should always be in worker mode because duty can be imposed anywhere at any time. All the BJP leaders invited to the dinner at JP Nadda’s house were gifted the famous Makhana of Mithila, Tilakut of Gaya and shawl decorated with Madhubani painting.

Jan Suraj founder Prashant Kishore broke his silence on not opening his party’s account in Bihar elections and claimed that the elections were ‘rigged’. However, he admitted that at this time he had no evidence to support this allegation.

Prashant Kishor described Jan Suraj’s defeat as a ‘crushing’ defeat, but also stressed that the impact of his campaign was visible at the grassroots level. He claimed that the voting trends were not matching with the feedback his team received during the months-long Jan Suraj Yatra. He said he believed something went wrong.

‘Some unstoppable forces were at play’
Speaking to India Today TV on Sunday (November 23), Prashant Kishor said that some unstoppable forces were at play, parties which people hardly knew got lakhs of votes. Some people are saying that EVMs were tampered. This is something that people accuse after losing. I don’t have any proof, but a lot of things don’t match. Prima facie it seems something has gone wrong, but we don’t know what.

NDA government accused of distributing money
Apart from this, the founder of Jan Suraj also accused the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) of distributing money to thousands of women voters in Bihar to manipulate the election results. Kishore said, “From the day of announcement of the elections till the day of voting, the women were given Rs 10,000. Even this amount was not enough for their promise. They were told that they would get a total of Rs 2 lakh and this Rs 10,000 was just the first instalment.

‘Fear of return of Lalu’s jungle raj’
Prashant Kishore further said that another factor that was working most against Jan Suraj was the fear of the return of Lalu’s jungle raj. By the last phase of the campaign, many voters had assumed that Jan Suraj was in no position to win. Their concern was simple, if they voted for us and we did not win, it could pave the way for the return of Lalu’s jungle raj. This fear certainly turned some people away.

This time in Bihar Assembly elections, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) contested on 6 seats and registered a resounding victory on 5 seats. Despite this, none of the winning MLAs of the party got a place in the new cabinet of Nitish Kumar. Still, party chief Jitan Ram Manjhi seems happy and the reason for this is his son Santosh Suman becoming a minister once again.

5 HAM MLAs win, but no one gets ministerial post
The 5 seats won by Hindustani Awam Morcha in this election include-

Deepa Manjhi from Imamganj (daughter-in-law of Jitan Ram Manjhi)

Lalan Ram from Kutumba, who defeated Congress President Rajesh Ram

Barachatti to Jyoti Devi (Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Samdhan)

Romit Kumar from Atri

Prafulla Kumar Manjhi from Sikandra

None of these five have been given ministerial post in the Nitish government. This is being considered a big sign in political circles, but no voice of displeasure was raised in the Manjhi group.

Santosh Suman became minister for the third time
Even though the winning MLAs did not get a place in the new government of Nitish Kumar, Jitan Ram Manjhi’s son Santosh Kumar Suman has once again been made a minister. This will be his third term. Suman is the national president of HAM and also a member of Bihar Legislative Council.

Why is Santosh Suman important?
Santosh Suman is considered a leader who is educated and does politics with planning. He has done MA in Political Science from Delhi University. He has passed UGC-NET. He has done PhD from Magadh University. Before coming into politics, he was a lecturer and social worker. While being a minister, he did many works in the Scheduled Caste and Tribe Welfare Department. By resigning from the Nitish cabinet in 2023, he also gave a strong political message on the issue of independent identity of the party.

HAM’s small performance, but big political role
Although, HAM’s performance in the 2025 Bihar elections was not very good, but this party emerged as very important in the political equations. Manjhi’s role in coalition politics has continuously increased and Santosh Suman becoming a minister is the biggest proof of this.

With the swearing in of the new NDA government in Bihar, it has become clear...

With the swearing in of the new NDA government in Bihar, it has become clear which party has got the maximum number of ministerial posts in comparison to its seats. BJP and JD(U) are the largest parties in the NDA alliance which returned to power with 202 seats, but there seems to be an interesting balance between the two in the distribution of ministerial posts. Nitish Kumar took oath as Chief Minister for the 10th time, while BJP’s Samrat Chaudhary and Vijay Sinha became Deputy Chief Ministers.

How many seats does which party have?
NDA has a total of 202 seats in the new assembly, in which BJP is the largest party with 89 seats. On the other hand, JDU has 85 seats. Apart from these, LJP (Ram Vilas) has 19 seats, HAM has 5 and RLM has 4 seats.

NDA seat distribution in Bihar elections 2025
In the Bihar Assembly elections 2025, NDA had contested all 243 seats. In this alliance, BJP and JDU were given equal number of 101-101 seats. Apart from these, LJP (Ram Vilas) got 29 seats, HAM (HAM) got 6 seats and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) also got 6 seats.

How many ministerial posts have come to JDU’s account?
Talking about ministerial posts, JDU has got a total of nine posts including the Chief Minister. Apart from Nitish Kumar, JDU’s Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Vijendra Yadav, Shravan Kumar, Leshi Singh, Ashok Chaudhary, Madan Sahni, Sunil Kumar and Mohammad Jama Khan have been made ministers. JDU has been given a balanced and adequate representation as per its proportion of seats.

Most ministers from BJP quota?
BJP has got two Deputy Chief Ministers and apart from this, twelve more leaders have been made ministers. These include Mangal Pandey, Dilip Jaiswal, Nitin Naveen, Ramkripal Yadav, Sanjay Singh Tiger, Arun Shankar Prasad, Surendra Mehta, Narayan Prasad, Rama Nishad, Lakhendra Roshan, Shreyasi Singh and Pramod Kumar. In this way, BJP got a total of 14 ministerial posts, which is more than JDU in number, but considering BJP’s seat count (89), its minister per seat ratio is slightly less than JDU.

Even small parties are in trouble
LJP (Ram Vilas) has secured two ministerial posts despite only 19 seats, which is considered a strong bargain compared to its size. Jitan Ram Manjhi’s party HAM has five seats and has got one ministerial post, which is considered a good representation for a small party. Similarly, RLM has four seats and has also got a ministerial post.

Chief Ministers of many states including PM Modi were present at the swearing in.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda were present in the swearing-in. Apart from this, Chandrababu Naidu of Andhra Pradesh, Rekha Gupta of Delhi, Naib Singh Saini of Haryana, Himanta Biswa Sarma of Assam and Nephew Rio of Nagaland were also present.

Nitish Kumar took oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar at Gandhi Maidan in Patna on Thursday (20 November). Along with Nitish Kumar, who became the Chief Minister for the 10th time, 26 ministers also took the oath of office and secrecy. This time many new faces have been included in the cabinet, in which a person who did not contest in this election has also been made a minister, his name is Deepak Prakash.

You may not know Deepak Prakash directly, but everyone knows his father very well. Deepak Prakash is the son of prominent leader of Bihar Upendra Kushwaha. Upendra Kushwaha is known for his ‘Lav-Kush’ equation, which links the OBC Kurmi and OBC Kushwaha (Koeri) groups together. These classes have a good population in Bihar and Kushwaha is one of the most influential leaders of this community.

Despite this, Upendra Kushwaha left his MLAs for the post of minister and gave the opportunity to his son Deepak Prakash, who is currently not a member of any House. He will have to become a member of the Legislative Council or Assembly within the next six months.

RLM won Bajpatti, Madhubani, Sasaram and Dinara seats. In Bajpatti, Rameshwar Kumar Mahato won by 3395 votes, in Madhubani, Madhav Anand won by 20,552 votes, in Sasaram, Upendra Kushwaha’s wife Snehlata won by a margin of more than 25 thousand votes and in Dinara, Alo Kumar Singh won by 10,834 votes.

Nitish Kumar, who established his ace in the politics of Bihar, not only changed the picture of the state but also strengthened the social and political structure. This is the reason why this time too the NDA alliance under his leadership crossed the 200 mark. Nitish Kumar, who has a political career spanning four decades, will take oath as the Chief Minister of Bihar for the 10th time. In such a situation, today we are telling about his political career. If we look at the journey of Nitish Kumar, known for his strategic moves and sharp political perspective, for the first time in 1977, Nitish Kumar contested elections from Harnaut seat. Nitish had to face defeat in this election. After this, in 1980, Nitish contested elections from Harnaut seat and again lost. After this, he had vowed that if he lost the elections in 1985, he would leave politics, but fate had something else in store. He became MLA in 1985. Since then he has become Chief Minister several times. In 1985, Nitish Kumar won the Bihar Assembly elections from Harnaut in Nalanda district. Four years later, he won the Barh Lok Sabha seat and entered national politics. In 1990, he was made the Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Cooperation in the VP Singh government. In 1994, he separated from Lalu Prasad Yadav and chose his independent path. He formed the Samata Party along with George Fernandes this year. In 1996, Samata Party came into alliance with BJP and won 6 Lok Sabha seats from Bihar.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s appreciation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Ramnath Goenka lecture has become a major controversy within the party. Many Congress leaders have expressed displeasure over this comment of Tharoor. The strongest reaction came from party leader Sandeep Dixit, who directly asked Tharoor why he remained in the Congress if he felt the BJP’s policies were better.

Sandeep Dixit’s allegation – ‘Tharoor does not understand the country properly’
Sandeep Dixit said that he does not think that Shashi Tharoor understands the country very well. He said that if anyone thinks that a leader or government is doing good work for the country by going against the policies of the Congress, then such a person should adopt the same policies and explain why he is in the Congress. He said that if Tharoor really feels that the strategies of BJP or Prime Minister Modi are better than those of Congress, then he should clarify it openly. If he is not able to do this, he will be called a hypocrite.

What did Tharoor say? Why did the ruckus start?
The whole controversy started when Shashi Tharoor openly praised Prime Minister Modi’s Ramnath Goenka lecture. Tharoor said in his post that in the speech, Prime Minister Modi talked about India’s ‘constructive impatience for development’ and stressed on ‘getting out of the colonial mentality’. Tharoor also wrote that the entire speech was impressive both from an economic perspective and as a cultural appeal. He also told that he attended the lecture despite suffering from severe cold and cough because he felt it was necessary.

He spoke of India’s “constructive impatience” for development and strongly pushed for a post-colonial mindset.

The PM emphasized that India is no longer just an ’emerging market’… pic.twitter.com/97HwGgQ67N

Supriya Shrinet’s question – ‘Why is PM Modi angry with journalism?’
Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinet also raised questions on Tharoor’s opinion. He said that he did not find anything in Prime Minister Modi’s speech that could be appreciated. Shrinet alleged that the Prime Minister is unhappy with impartial journalism and does not like journalists who show and speak the truth. He also said that Modi spent a lot of time criticizing Congress in his speech and it shows that he ‘thinks about Congress day and night.’ Srinet said that he did not know what Shashi Tharoor found worth appreciating in this speech.

What did PM Modi say in his speech?
In the Ramnath Goenka lecture, Prime Minister Modi also commented on the Bihar election results. He said that this election has given a clear message to the governments of all the states that their future will depend on their development policies, whether they are Left, Right or Centre. He also took a dig at those who say that BJP is always in ‘election mode’. Modi said that BJP does not live in election mode but in ’emotional mode’ and wins elections only by being dedicated to the emotions and development of the people 24×7.
