A case of suicide of an undertrial prisoner has come to light in Saharsa, Bihar on Sunday (28 December). A 25-year-old prisoner committed suicide by slitting his throat in Mandal Jail Saharsa. There was chaos in the family as soon as the news of death was heard. The deceased prisoner has been identified as Sunil Kumar, who is said to be a resident of Bara Lalganj of Bihara police station area.

The deceased prisoner was lodged in Mandal Jail Saharsa since March 11, 2024 in a POCSO Act case. Whose case number is 46/24. The jail administration informed the family about the incident at 2 pm on Sunday. As soon as the information was received, Sadar Police Station Chief Subodh Kumar and FSL team reached Sadar Hospital and started investigation.

What is the allegation of the brother of the deceased prisoner?

The deceased’s brother Pintu Kumar reached Sadar Hospital and accused him of murder. Regarding the incident, Pintu Kumar, brother of the deceased prisoner, said, “My brother was implicated in a rape case and was in jail. On Sunday, the jail administration informed that your brother’s condition is serious. My brother has been murdered inside the jail by slitting his throat.

The matter is being investigated – Jail Superintendent

Meanwhile, Jail Superintendent Niranjan Pandit told during a telephonic conversation that the prisoner has committed suicide. Whose CCTV footage is also there. He said, “Investigation is being done.” Only after this will we be able to tell how he committed suicide.

Bihar government has decided to promote 31 officers of the Indian Police Service (IPS). This includes IPS officers of different batches, whose new appointments will be effective from January 1, 2026. This decision was taken on 23 December.

The objective of this decision is to strengthen the leadership in the police administration and fill the vacant posts at the senior level. The Home Department has issued an official notification in this regard. Important administrative changes in the state police structure are considered certain.

IPS officer Kundan Krishnan will become Director General of Police

According to the notification issued, 1994 batch IPS officer Kundan Krishnan has been promoted from the post of Additional Director General of Police and appointed as Director General of Police. He has been given the responsibility of DGP, which is considered the highest post of the state police. This promotion has been done on the basis of seniority and administrative experience.

8 IPS of 2008 were also promoted

Apart from this, eight IPS officers of 2008 batch have been promoted from Deputy Inspector General to Inspector General of Police. These include Kim, Nitasha Guria, Satyaveer Singh, Upendra Kumar Sharma, Vikas Burman and Manoj Kumar and other officers. According to PTI, it has been clarified in the notification that Vikas Barman is currently on central deputation. Three DIG rank officers of the same batch have also been made IG, which include STF DIG Vivekananda, Saharsa Range DIG Manoj Kumar and Sanjay Kumar.

22 IPS of 2012 were also promoted

According to the notification, 22 IPS officers of the year 2012 batch have been promoted to the post of Deputy Inspector General. These officers also include Gaya Senior Superintendent of Police Anand Kumar and Saran Superintendent of Police Kumar Ashish. All 22 officers have been promoted to DIG rank. These promotions are expected to provide additional experience and leadership to the police administration at the district and range level, which will make law and order more effective.

According to the information, through this new portal citizens will be able to avail many services online. Which includes facilities like police verification, filing e-complaint, reporting loss of documents or goods. Officials said that as soon as any complaint is registered on the portal, it will be immediately sent to the concerned police station. After preliminary investigation at the police station level, if the case is found to be true then FIR can also be filed online.

The complainant will be able to see the status of the application in real time.

The biggest feature of the portal is that the complainant will be able to see the status of his application in real time. This will save people’s time, energy and money. Besides, transparency and accountability in police functioning will also increase. On this occasion, Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar, ADG Kundan Krishnan and all the senior officers of the police headquarters were present. Home Minister Samrat Chaudhary is continuously busy in strengthening the security system of Bihar. He is continuously holding review meetings with the police department. A BPSC teacher was shot dead in Bihar’s Araria district while she was going to school on a scooter. The deceased teacher has been identified as Shivani Verma, a resident of Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh. Shivani was 27-28 years old and was living in a rented house in Araria. People present nearby told that two masked miscreants came next to their scooter and shot Shivani on her temple.

Shivani Verma, who was driving the scooter, fell down as soon as the bullet hit her. The people present there took him to Araria District Hospital, but he could not be saved. Doctors declared Shivani dead.

The Election Commission said in a statement, “Complete arrangements for counting of votes have been made in 243 assembly constituencies. The counting of votes will be conducted under the supervision of 243 returning officers, in the presence of 243 observers deployed with them and in the presence of the candidates and their agents.”

More than 18000 agents will monitor

He further said, “A total of 4,372 counting tables have been installed, each manned by a supervisor, a counting assistant and a micro observer. More than 18,000 counting agents appointed by the candidates will also monitor the process.”

Counting of votes will start at 8 am on Friday. The statement said that as per the instructions of the Election Commission, the counting of postal ballots will start first, while the counting of EVMs will start at 8.30 am.

Duty of 106 companies of CRPF

“Adequate personnel of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) and Bihar Police have been deployed across the state so that the counting of votes can be conducted peacefully and any untoward incident can be prevented,” a senior official said. He said that 106 companies sent from outside the state have also been deployed for security duty.

VVPAT sealed in strong room

An election official said that the EVMs and VVPATs used in voting have been sealed and kept safe in a strong room with double lock system. He said, “Two-tier security has been ensured at the counting centres. The inner perimeter security is entrusted to the CAPFs, while the outer perimeter security is the responsibility of the state police. Apart from this, 24×7 surveillance through CCTV cameras and other security measures have also been implemented.”

In Gopalganj, miscreants set a police vehicle on fire. After the rumor of death of three people in a road accident, people got enraged and burnt the police inspector’s car. The car burst into flames and a tense atmosphere was created. To control the angry crowd, the police also released tear gas shells. SP Awadhesh Dixit said, “Three people were injured in a Scorpio in a road accident near Jadopur Chowk of the city police station area.” The Sadar Inspector’s car was chasing that car. Meanwhile, someone spread a rumor that three people had died in a police vehicle, after which people became furious and targeted the police and set the vehicle on fire.

The injured were admitted to the hospital

Giving information, SP further said that the people injured in the accident have been sent to Sadar Hospital for treatment. The injured have been identified as Nandu Chauhan, resident of Lakhpatiya Mode of Nagar police station, Ayshan Ali and Raj Hussain, residents of Ekderwa village.
