Bimstec Summit 2025: During the BIMSTEC summit 2025, a very special view was seen in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand. India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh’s interim government chief Mohammad Yunus were seen sitting next to each other. The opportunity was of dinner, which was hosted by Thailand’s Prime Minister Partagarn Shinavatra. The possibility of this meeting was already being expressed. It is considered very important in view of changing relations between India and Bangladesh.

The meeting of Prime Minister Modi and Mohammad Yunus is considered important because it will be the first high-level talks after Sheikh Hasina is out of power. For the past several months, tension has increased recently in relations between India and Bangladesh, there are many reasons behind it. For example, minorities have been attacked in neighboring countries, in which the main target has been made for Hindus. Bangladesh’s relationship with India has become sweet with Pakistan and China. However, in the midst of all this, this meeting shows the possibility of negotiating on these issues during the BIMSTEC summit 2025. India can take advantage of this and make strategic concerns clear to Bangladesh.

Yunus’s visit to China and India’s concern
Mohammad Yunus’s recent visit to China was a matter of concern for India. He made some comments about the northeastern region of India, which India did not like. The main reason for this is that China is constantly strengthening its hold in South Asia, and India is concerned that Bangladesh does not come under the influence of Beijing completely.

China-Bangladesh signs of growing partnership
China has expressed the intention of investing in Bangladesh’s infrastructure. Bangladesh may also see the possibility of military cooperation with China. It is feared that even for this, there is no aviation of Bangladesh’s possible changes in foreign policy. Therefore, the Modi-Unus meeting may be a chance to establish a balance for India during the BIMSTEC summit.

Growing proximity to Pakistan
The recent military and diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan have gained momentum. Bangladesh conducted joint military exercises with Pakistan. There was also a visit to military delegations from Pakistan and Bangladesh. Amidst all this, Yunus has also received an invitation from Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif to come to Pakistan. This is a danger bell for India as Bangladesh had been having a strong strategic relationship with India till now. If this attitude changes, new geopolitical instability may arise in South Asia.

Possible results from Modi-Unus meeting
The meeting of Modi and Yunus can go in many possible directions, which are the following.

Modi can emphasize the importance of continuing cooperation with Bangladesh.
Efforts can be made to balance the influence of China and Pakistan.
India can offer a new economic proposal or defense cooperation.
Focus on safety of minorities in Bangladesh.
There is a strong economic partnership between India-Bangladesh, and this meeting can help resolve trade disputes.
India can demand a clear stand from Younus on many important issues.

PM modi on bangladesh: Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor of the interim government of Bangladesh, wants to improve his stressful relations with India. Because Yunus knows that Bangladesh cannot keep its relations with India spoiled for long. For this reason, the interim government of Bangladesh had requested India to hold bilateral talks of Mohammad Yunus and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in BIMSTEC Summit 2025 (Bimstec Summit 2025) to be held in Bangkok. However, India has not yet responded to this request of Banglades.

Apart from this, Mohammad Yunus wanted to travel bilateral to India before his visit to China, but India did not respond to this either. At the same time, now Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has sent a letter to Mohammad Yunus, which has given him some relief. Actually, PM Modi has written a letter to Mohammad Yunus on Bangladesh’s Independence Day.

PM Modi wished Bangladesh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has written a letter to Mohammad Yunus on the occasion of Independence Day of his neighboring country Bangladesh. PM Modi said in the letter, “The spirit of the liberation struggle of 1971 remains a guide for the relations between India and Bangladesh.
India-Bangladesh in Bimstec: India has given a huge blow to Bangladesh led by Mohammed Younus. The Hindustan Times quoted sources in its report as saying that India refused to hold a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Advisor of the Interim Government Mohammad Yunus at the BIMSTEC Summit to be held in Bangkok.

In fact, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, Mohammad Yunus are scheduled to attend the BIMSTEC summit to be held on April 2-4 next month. This will be the first time that PM Modi and Yunus will be in front of each other in a multilateral program. But during this summit, there will be no bilateral meeting of the top leaders of both countries.

Bangladesh had requested India to meet

Bangladesh had requested to hold a meeting between the top leaders of India-Bangladesh at the BIMSTEC summit. This was confirmed by Tauhid Hussain, advisor for foreign affairs in the interim government of Bangladesh.

Tauhid Hussain, advisor to foreign affairs in the interim government of Bangladesh, gave a statement to news agency ANI on Thursday (March 20). He had said, “We have made a diplomatic contact with India to hold a diplomatic meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus at the BIMSTEC summit to be held in Thailand’s capital Bangkok.”

This meeting is not right according to the current situation of India-Bangladesh

Sources in the Hindustan Times said, “The situation between India and Bangladesh is not correct. In such a situation, a bilateral meeting between the top leaders of the two countries is not correct. However, in this multilateral program, the possibility of meeting or greeting cannot be ruled out if each other is face to face, but no bilateral meeting is expected.”
