Coming out of Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, Govind Jaiswal has proved that even poverty gives up in front of hard work and self-confidence. The son of a rickshaw-pulling father who raised his family, studied in difficult circumstances and passed the country’s toughest examination, UPSC, in the first attempt. Today, his story has become a source of inspiration for millions of students.

Govind Jaiswal was born in a very ordinary family of Varanasi. His family lived in a small room near the railway station. The financial condition of the house was so weak that many times there was no electricity for long periods. After the death of his mother in his childhood, the responsibility of the family fell on his father.

Childhood insult changed life

Govind many times had to face taunts and discrimination from people due to poverty. An incident changed the course of his life, when he was thrown out of a rich friend’s house simply because he was poor. On the same day, he decided to become an IAS officer.

Father sold rickshaw for son’s education

Govind’s father used to manage the family expenses by driving a rickshaw. To fulfill his son’s dreams, he even sold his land and several rickshaws so that Govind could go to Delhi and prepare for UPSC. This sacrifice of his father became the biggest strength of Govind’s success.

After reaching Delhi, Govind did not give up despite financial constraints. He managed his expenses by teaching mathematics to children and studied for hours in the library. He continued preparing for UPSC through Hindi medium and never let his confidence weaken.

Passed UPSC exam in first attempt

In the year 2006, at the age of only 22, Govind Jaiswal passed the UPSC exam in his first attempt. He achieved All India Rank 48 and became an IAS officer. His success proved that strong intentions and hard work are most important for success.

Govind Jaiswal believes that language never becomes a hindrance in success. He said that self-confidence and the ability to express one’s thoughts correctly is real strength. Despite studying in Hindi medium, he achieved success in a difficult examination like UPSC.
