The government data released by South Korea has made a shocking disclosure. According to government data, more than 7 thousand people committed suicide in the first half of this year. Statistics, according to Korea’s data, a total of 7,067 people committed suicide between January and June, which is slightly less than the 7,844 number last year, but is equal to 7,142 people in the first half of 2023.

In these figures, people over 50 years of age have the highest 22.4 percent share. This is followed by 40 years (19 percent), 60 years (15.1 percent), 30 years (13.5 percent) and 70 years (9.8 percent) people. The rest of the number is from other age groups.

Need for public health intervention

Experts say that suicides should not only be seen as a personal problem, but also as a broad social and structural problem and requires public health intervention.

In an article recently published in the International Social Security Review of Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs (KIHAASA), researcher Choi Min-J, Korea University Graduate School of Public Health Researcher Choi Minj, said that the government should move beyond the interventions targeted for high-risk groups and include selective and universal measures addressing risks in general population.

Birth rate increased in South Korea

He also urged the establishment of a comprehensive control center to assess how fiscal, labor, and other policies can affect suicides and where such risks are identified, all measures can be implemented correctly.

South Korea currently has the highest suicidal rate in South Korea, which was 26.2 per 100,000 people per 100,000 people, which is more than 10.8 of the OECD average of 10.8. Earlier this week, government data showed that the number of children born in South Korea in July increased by about 6 percent compared to the previous year. One reason for this is an increase in weddings.

Between January and July, so many children were born

According to statistics Korea’s data, a total of 21,803 children were born in July, which is 5.9 percent more than the birth of 20,580 children last year. This is a record of annual growth for the 13th consecutive month, but the fourth lowest figure of July since the government recorded records in 1981.

A total of 147,804 children were born between January and July. This figure shows an increase of 7.2 percent as compared to the same period last year, which is the highest growth rate since 1981. This was the first time since 2015, when an annual increase in the number of newborns was recorded during the January-July time. The average number of children expected in her lifetime, ie a woman’s total fertility rate, ie a year ago, increased by 0.04 in July to 0.8.

The world’s population has increased very fast in the last few years. Thousands of years ago, the population of humans on earth took a long time to reach one billion, but after that the number reached eight billion in just 200 years. The special thing is that since 1960, i.e. in only 65 years, the world’s population has increased from 3 billion to 8 billion.

However, despite such a sharp population growth, there are some countries where the population is decreasing. One of these countries is Tuvalu, who is struggling with its existence crisis today.

Crisis on the declining population and existence of Tuvalu
Tuvalu is a small island country located in the West-Central Pacific Ocean, now facing a population crisis. The total population of this country was once about 10 thousand, but now a period of decline has started. According to the latest data, the population of Tuvalu has decreased by 1.80 percent and currently this number has reduced to slightly more than 9 thousand. If this situation continues, then Tuvalu can reach the verge of completely extinction. This country is located between Australia and Hawaii.

United Nations prediction- population will continue to grow
In 2011, the total population of the world was 7 billion. Within just 14 years this number increased by one billion. The United Nations estimates that this number will increase continuously in the coming years. According to the United Nations report, by 2030 the world’s population will reach 8.6 billion. Then by 2050 this figure can be 9.8 billion. The world’s population is expected to reach 11.2 billion by the year 2100.

Ukraine, Japan, Greece: Countries with a decreasing population
There are some countries in the world, whose population is clearly seen.
Ukraine recorded a drastic decline of 8.10 percent in only one year between 2002 and 2023. The main reason behind this decline is the ongoing war in the country, in which thousands of people lost their lives and a large number of citizens migrated to other countries.

The population of Japan has also decreased by 0.50 percent. However, the situation here is somewhat different. While migration and war cause war in other countries, only less birthday in Japan is the reason for the decrease in population. Many incentive schemes have been started by the government, but despite this people are not showing interest in giving birth to children.

European country Greece has also recorded a decline in population. There was a decrease of 1.60 percent in a single day. Similarly, the population of San Marino has recorded a decline of 1.10 percent, Kosovo population 1 percent, and Belarus population declined by 0.60 percent. Along with Belarus, the same decline has been seen in Bosnia and Albania.

The most affected by war and migration: Ukraine
Ukraine has become such a country in the world at this time, where the population is decreasing at the fastest. Thousands of people have been killed due to the war there, while a large number of citizens have gone to other countries to take shelter. This is the reason that in a year itself, the population here has fallen by more than 8 percent.

Only less birthday in Japan
Japan is different from other countries. There is neither war nor a major problem of migration here. Despite this, the population here is declining every year. The reason is – the lifestyle and thinking of the people there. The youth is not excited about getting married and having children. Even after giving all the facilities and encouragement by the government, there has been no significant change in the situation.

Europe’s decreasing, Asia’s increasing population
If we talk about continents, then Europe is the only continent where the population is continuously decreasing. On the other hand, the population of Asia is increasing rapidly.
Asia has become the most populous continent in the world due to big countries like India, China, Pakistan and Indonesia.

Which countries are afraid of population crisis in future?
According to the United Nations, the current population of Greece is about 10 million (one crore), but by the year 2100 it can be reduced to 9 million (90 lakh). Similarly, countries like Russia, Italy and South Korea are also under threat of declining population. If these countries do not take concrete steps for population stability, then economic and social challenges may be faced in future.

Vietnam two child policy ended: Vietnam has officially abolished the policy of two children who have been running since time. The National Assembly of the country amended the law on Tuesday (June 03, 2025) under which families were set to have one or two children. This was confirmed by the Government Media Vietnam News Agency on Wednesday (June 04, 2025).

Vietnam took this decision to promote the falling birth rate and to solve concerns about the elderly population. In 1988, Vietnam banned the birth of more than two couples. The thinking behind this was that women will give less time on the care of children and focus on work. Due to this policy, historically low birth rates are being seen in the country.

What is the birth rate of Vietnam?

Vietnam’s birth rate in 2021 was 2.11 children per woman, which is slightly above the level required to maintain a stable population but since then it fell continuously: 2.01 in 2022, 1.96 in 2023 and 1.91 in 2024. Deputy Health Minister Gujen Thi Liin Huenang said at a conference earlier this year that despite policy changes and public awareness campaigns, it is becoming difficult to encourage families to have more children.

Expressing his concern, he said that the declining birth rate can affect long-term socio-economic development, including the lack of aged population and workforce. He urged the society to change the mindset of focusing only on family planning and made a comprehensive view on dimensions like population and development.

China has also ended a child with a child

Vietnam is not the only country to end his two-child policy. China has also abolished its long-standing one-child policy, which started in 1979. In this policy, the first second child and later in 2021 were relaxed to allow the third child. However, these changes led to very little success in increasing the birth rate.

Also read: A small country will compete with China with India’s ‘Bahmos’, if the eye will be seen, the deal of $ 700 million will be seen

South korea population crisis: The ratio of those who consider marriage mandatory in South Korea increased last year. In a government report, it has been claimed that 52.5 percent of the age of 13 and above in 2024 saw marriage as a need. This figure reflects an increase of 2.5 percentage points in the last two years, while since 2010 this figure was on a steady decline except a brief surge in 2020.

Not only this, it was also mentioned in the report that 68.4 percent of the respondents said that it is necessary to have children after marriage. This figure shows an increase of 3.1 percentage points in the last two years. This change has happened at a time when South Korea is facing a crisis of population reduction and the government has planned many measures to deal with this crisis.

222,422 couples married in 2023, increased by 14.9%

Last year, 222,422 couples got married, which is 14.9 percent more than last year. According to the report, this is the fastest annual increase since it started collecting data in 1981. Along with this, the number of newborns also increased in 2024. The total fertility rate which shows the number of average children in a woman’s lifetime also improved and it increased to 0.75, which was 0.72 last year.

South Korea’s fertility rate lowest

According to the statistics of Korea, a total of 238,300 children were born in 2024, which is 3.6 percent higher than a record low of 230,000 in 2023. However, South Korea’s fertility rate is still the lowest in the world and is about half of the average of the Economic Cooperation and Development Organization (OECD) member countries. Since 2018, this country is the only member of OECD whose rate is less than 1. However, by 2030, the government aims to increase it to 1, which is very important to maintain a stable population without migration.
