A major controversy broke out in the politics of West Bengal on Saturday (30 May 2026), when protests took place in Sonarpur during the visit of Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee. During this, he was accused of throwing eggs, shoes, stones and mud. Abhishek claimed that he was also pushed and assaulted. After the incident, Mamata Banerjee reached Belle Vue Clinic in Kolkata late at night and alleged that due to pressure from the police and the ruling BJP, doctors were avoiding admitting Abhishek Banerjee to the hospital.

Abhishek Banerjee had on Saturday set out to meet the families of TMC workers who allegedly died in the post-poll violence. First he reached Beleghata area of Kolkata, where he met the family of a deceased worker. Meanwhile, a CID team reached his residence. This team had come to serve notice in connection with the investigation of the alleged MLA signature scam. Abhishek was not present at home. Later, CID issued a notice to him and asked him to appear at the headquarters of the investigating agency on Monday.

Abhishek Banerjee protested in Sonarpur

Abhishek Banerjee reached Sonarpur in South 24 Parganas district. Preparations for protest were already visible there. At many places people showed black flags and raised slogans of going back. Some women’s groups also joined the protest and held eggs in their hands. When Abhishek’s convoy passed through the area, the protesters threw eggs. The road leading to the worker’s house where Abhishek was going was narrow. So he left his car on the main road and proceeded on his motorcycle. Later they started walking.

Abhishek took help of cricket helmet

Abhishek alleges that during this time some people surrounded him and beat him up. He said that eggs, stones and pieces of bricks were thrown at him. To protect himself, he wore a cricket helmet, but the protest continued. According to him, he was also slapped and punched. On the other hand, the protesters said that the TMC worker whose death is being claimed was not a victim of election violence. He alleged that the party is making false claims.

Abhishek Banerjee reached the worker’s house

After the incident, Abhishek Banerjee reached the house of the concerned worker. There he said that a conspiracy was hatched to kill him. He said that even if he is attacked again, he will not leave without ensuring the safety of the family of the deceased worker. Abhishek also raised questions on BJP leaders and administration. He said that he had already informed the police about his visit, but adequate security arrangements were not made at the spot. He alleged that despite calling and sending messages to the police, no response was received.

The attackers came from outside – Abhishek Banerjee

Abhishek Banerjee also said that those who attacked him were not local people, but people called from outside. According to him, some people were pre-arranged at a place and were prepared for the attack. Abhishek told that he has undergone seven eye surgeries and has already met with a serious road accident. Showing his broken glasses to the media, he said that stones and bricks were thrown at him.

Mamta Banerjee targeted BJP

After the incident, he was first taken to Apollo Hospital and then to Belle Vue Clinic for treatment. It was told from both the hospitals that he did not have any serious injury and there was no need for admission. After this, former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached the hospital and targeted the BJP. He alleged that pressure is being put on the hospital administration. Mamta said that if political permission has to be taken for admitting a patient then it is a very worrying situation.

New controversy in West Bengal politics

After this entire incident, a new controversy has started in the politics of West Bengal. In recent times, incidents of public protest against many TMC leaders have come to light. Last week, eggs were also thrown at MP Saugata Roy in his constituency. At many places, protesters have raised slogans of ‘chor-thief’ against the leaders. Now the allegations and counter-allegations between TMC and BJP regarding this matter have intensified, while Abhishek Banerjee has said that he will knock on the doors of both the High Court and the Supreme Court regarding this incident.

MOTN Survey 2026: If Lok Sabha elections are held today, there will be no major upheaval in the politics of West Bengal. According to India Today-CVoter’s Mood of the Nation (MOTN) Survey 2026, the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) may maintain its strong hold in the state like in 2024.

There are definitely signs of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) getting a slight lead in seats and vote share, but the picture still appears to be in favor of TMC.

Know which party will get how many seats

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Trinamool Congress won 29 out of 42 seats in West Bengal, improving its 2019 performance. Whereas BJP was at second place with 12 seats. According to the latest 2026 MOTN survey, if elections are held now, TMC’s seats may drop to 28 with a slight decline, while BJP’s seats may increase to 14.

This estimate shows a lead for BJP compared to the August version of MOTN. In the August survey, BJP was expected to get 11 seats, which has now increased to 14. On the contrary, in the August 2026 survey, TMC’s seats were said to be 31, which has now been reduced to 28. This survey has come just two months before the West Bengal Assembly elections.

Signs of change in vote share also
According to the 2026 MOTN survey, the vote share of the BJP-led NDA may increase by about three percent. NDA’s vote share is expected to increase from 39 percent to 42 percent. Although the results of the survey cannot be considered as the final truth, it definitely indicates that BJP is not yet in a position to make any major inroads in West Bengal and the relevance of Trinamool Congress in the politics of the state still remains strong. The Mood of the Nation survey has been conducted in the last eight weeks, in which more than 1.25 lakh people from across the country were included. According to the survey, BJP led NDA can win more than 350 seats at the national level.

Previous survey data
In the MOTN survey of August 2024, TMC was expected to get 32 seats, BJP 8 seats and Congress 2 seats. Whereas in the survey of February 2024, if elections had been held at that time, TMC was expected to get 22 seats and BJP 19 seats.
