The third round of review talks held at the United Nations regarding the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) ended without any final agreement. After this, Iran accused America and its allies of ‘causing obstruction’. Iran said that due to American pressure and excessive demands, this important global conference has failed to adopt any final document for the third consecutive time.

Iran’s direct attack on America
Iran’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations issued a statement on social media platform X saying, ‘America’s excessive demands have put the NPT in a state of free fall. The NPT review conference failed for the third consecutive time due to the obstructive policy of America and its allies. Iran warned that if nuclear disarmament does not happen, the future of the NPT may be in danger.

Review meeting was held in New York
The review meeting of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) started on 27 April at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. This conference reached its last day on Friday, but no consensus could be reached among the member countries. According to a report by Japan’s public broadcaster NHK, the draft of the final document was changed four times, but consensus could not be reached on the disputed issues.

Conflict over Iran’s nuclear program
According to the report, the biggest controversy was regarding the line in which it was said that ‘Iran can never acquire, develop or search for nuclear weapons.’ Iran demanded the removal of this sentence, while the US remained adamant on retaining it in the final document. There were long discussions behind the scenes between the two countries on this issue, but no solution could be found.

Issues related to Ukraine and North Korea also became the cause of controversy
Many controversial words related to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant and North Korea’s denuclearization were also removed from the draft of the final document, so that consensus could be reached. Despite this, the member countries could not agree on the final document. Conference chairman Do Hung Viet said the failure to reach a consensus was “extremely unfortunate”.

The conference failed for the third consecutive time
The NPT review conference is normally held every five years. But this is the third consecutive time that member states have failed to accept a final joint document. Even before this, the conference could not reach its conclusion due to global tensions, nuclear arms race and regional conflicts.

The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is considered one of the most important nuclear treaties in the world. Its purpose is to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons and technology, promote peaceful nuclear energy cooperation, and advance global nuclear disarmament. This treaty was opened for signature in 1968 and came into force in 1970. In 1995 it was extended indefinitely. Currently 191 countries are part of this treaty, including five recognized nuclear weapon states.
