Christians are being targeted under Pakistan’s blasphemy laws. This is the situation when only 1.8 percent of the total population in Pakistan is left. Nevertheless, about one-fourth of blasphemy allegations have been leveled against these people.

There is a provision of death penalty in blasphemy laws. In June 2024, 73-year-old Pakistani Christian Lazar was brutally beaten to death on false charges of burning the Quran.

In 2023, attacks on Christian houses and buildings in Jaranwala are promoting the culture of fear. Historical churches have less freedom for worship and other activities. However, they are strictly monitored and many times are attacked by bombs.

According to the report, in the culture of Pakistan, leaving a family member is considered extremely shameful and hence those who convert to religion have to face sharp opposition from their own family and community, including so -called honor killing.

Why Christian is being targeted
The report says that Christians in Pakistan suffer from institutional discrimination and the work which are considered to be low, dirty and derogatory such as sewer cleaning or working on brick kiln, are reserved for Christians. Muslims are encouraged not to accept Christian men in senior positions at the workplace, as Islamic society promotes the outlook of superiority.

Christian Punjab
According to the report, Christians of Muslim background have to bear the brunt of harassment, one from radical Islamic groups that consider them to be religious and secondly from families, friends and neighbors who consider conversion from family and community as a shameful act of betrayal with family and community. Most Christians live in Punjab and this is the region of Pakistan, where the incidents of oppression and discrimination come the most.

A Pakistan court has directed the central government to set up an inquiry commission in 30 days to investigate the alleged misuse of the country’s controversial blasphemy laws. Questions have been raised about blasphemy laws in Pakistan, because in such cases often the crowd targets people regardless of the legal process.

Justice Sardar Ejaz Ishaq Khan of Islamabad High Court (IHC) ordered the formation of an inquiry commission on Tuesday (July 15, 2025) to investigate the misuse of these laws. The military ruler Ziaul Haq made these laws more rigid in the 1980s to protect the sanctity of the Prophet and the Quran.

Conspiracy to implicate in blasphemy case

The court passed this order during a hearing on a case related to several complaints of blasphemy. It is alleged that some officers, lawyers and other persons of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) conspired to implicate the innocent people in the blasphemy case and later used it to threaten money by threatening legal action.

It is alleged that those who refused to pay the money, were allegedly prosecuted under the blasphemy laws. In the last few years, many people accused of blasphemy were murdered by religious extremists.

Investigation will have to be completed in four months

This petition was first filed in September last year. The court heard at least 42 times before directing the federal government to set up an inquiry commission. Justice Khan said that the commission will have to complete the investigation in four months. However, if necessary, he can request the court to extend the deadline.

He said that according to data from the think-tank Center for Research and Security Studies (CRSS), 701 blasphemy cases were registered between 1947 and 2021, including 1,308 men and 107 women, including 1,415 people, were found accused. At least 89 people were killed in these cases, while 30 were injured. Among those killed were 72 men and 17 women.

Rapid growth in blasphemy cases

Statistics show that after the amendments presented by Jiaul Haq in 1986, the cases were rapidly increased when the blasphemy was made a death penalty. Prior to these amendments, only 11 cases were registered and three people were killed.

Actually, the root of this dispute is his new perfume brand, after launching, there has been anger among religious organizations. The matter is also related to Indian singer Sidhu Mosewala.

Why was the blasphemy accused?
A case has been registered on Rajab Butt under blasphemy and cyber crime laws. It is alleged that his perfume brand made fun of Pakistan’s blasphemy law. However, there is no direct charge of disregarding religious beliefs.

What is 295 dispute?
Rajab Butt named his perfume “295”, which is associated with Section 295 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC). This section refers to blasphemy laws. In the video, he said that his “Guru” Sidhu Mosewala was also accused under the same section.

Hardlineer clerics raised strong objections to this.
Tehreek-e-Labback Pakistan (TLP) leader Hyder Ali Shah Geelani lodged an FIR in the Lahore Police. He was booked under Section 295-A (insulting religious beliefs) and section 11 (hate speech) of PECA 2016.

What is the connection with Sidhu Mosewala?
In a video of Rajab Butt, he shows the bottle of perfume and says, “This has come 295 Mains, this has come 295 women … My master was the same. The same time was on me. The same time is on me. My master’s head was 295, my heads were on my head-295-A, 295- C.” In this video, he calls Sidhu Mosewala a “Ustad”.

Sidhu Mosewala released the song “295” before the murder. In the song, he placed Section 295 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the center. He told that on telling the truth, this section is imposed on people. Interestingly, Mouswala was killed on 29 May 2022 (29-5), which made the number more popular. TLP leader Hyder Ali Shah Geelani said that Rajab Butt has hurt religious sentiments and violated the blasphemy laws.
