This means that the blood pressure rises at the sight of the doctor&#8217;s white coat. This problem has become so common these days that 1-2 out of every 5 people are struggling with it. <p style="text-align: justify;">A 2024 study by the American Heart Association found that the risk of heart attack in people whose BP increases in front of the doctor is twice that of normal people. Researchers at Penn Medicine studied more than 60 thousand patients and said that if it is ignored, it can become a silent killer. According to ICMR&#8217;s 2024 report, more than 21 crore people are suffering from high BP and 20-30 percent of them are being given wrong medicines due to white coat hypertension. </p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>Why does this problem occur?</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">It is clear from the name of White Coat Hypertension disease that there is fear of doctor&#8217;s white coat, injections, needles and disease. When we reach a clinic or hospital, our heart beats faster when we see the doctor&#8217;s coat. Because of this the blood pressure suddenly rises. This is not a new disease. It was identified in the 1980s, but by 2025, many researches have revealed the secrets behind it.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;"><strong>This thing came to light in a study conducted in Japan</strong></p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">A study was completed on 153 people in Ohasama, Japan during 2023. In this study which lasted for about four years, it was seen that the effect of this disease lasts for a long time and this problem occurs again and again. If your BP remains more than 140/90 in office, but is less than 130/80 in 24-hour monitoring, then it is white coat. This problem occurs more in women, elderly and stressed people.</p>

That is, if your blood pressure remains even slightly high in middle age, its effect on the power of the heart will be clearly visible as you age. The results clearly showed that people whose blood pressure remained slightly elevated, even if in the &#8216;normal&#8217; range, had blood flow to the heart reduced by 6 to 12 percent by the age of 70.</p>

Till now we considered blood pressure as a limit based problem, i.e. if it goes above 140/90 then there is danger, if it remains below then it is safe. But this study has shown that the real meaning lies not in any single reading, but in how your blood pressure changes from year to year. This means that your body may look strong in your 30s or 40s, but persistently mildly increased blood pressure can narrow the arteries of the heart in the coming decades. This is why doctors are now advising to pay attention to blood pressure trends instead of single readings.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Your 30s start writing the story of your 70s. At this time, habits like staying awake till late night, eating too much salt, caffeine and stress gradually start showing their effects.  At the age of 40, work and responsibilities increase, stress hormones also increase. <p style="text-align: justify;">In this direction, scientists from the University of Edinburgh and many other institutions have developed a new medicine named Zylbesiran. This is not a pill but an injection. Its specialty is that it may have to be taken only once a year or once in six months. This medicine proved to be very effective in initial trials. The patients who were given this injection saw a significant reduction in their blood pressure. Especially a decline of 10 to 20 points was recorded in systolic blood pressure i.e. the upper number. This decline takes patients closer to healthy levels and reduces the risk of heart attack or stroke.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">Zylbesiran works differently from existing blood pressure medicines. Generally, high blood pressure increases when a hormone called angiotensin starts being produced in the body. This hormone shrinks the blood vessels, due to which the pressure increases. The new drug blocks the gene that makes a protein called angiotensinogen. When this protein is not produced, the veins do not shrink and the blood vessels remain relaxed. The result is that blood pressure automatically comes to normal level.</p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">107 people were included in this research. Of these, 80 patients were given the real medicine and the rest were given fake injection i.e. placebo. Those who were given zylbesiran showed significant improvement in their blood pressure. Professor David Webb of the University of Edinburgh says that this medicine can bring a big change in the treatment of blood pressure, because no new medicine of this kind has come out in the last 17 years.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">However, experts believe that this medicine is still in its initial stage and it is necessary to test it on a large scale. It would be premature to bring it into the market without examining its efficacy and safety over a long period of time. If the clinical trials are successful in the future, then high blood pressure patients will have to get an injection once a year instead of taking medicine daily. New medicines like zylbesiran can prove to be a boon for those patients who find it difficult to take medicines daily. If this drug proves to be safe and effective, it can change the face of hypertension treatment and make the lives of millions of people easier.</p>
