Diabetes Cases Rising Rapidly In India: After the Corona epidemic, a big change has been seen in the lifestyle of people in India. Spending more time at home, lack of physical activity and bad eating habits have had a deep impact on health. Now the latest report of National Family Health Survey-6 has presented a picture which has increased the concern of health experts. According to the report, cases of obesity and high blood sugar are increasing rapidly in the country, which can become a major cause of serious diseases like diabetes in the future.

The NFHS-6 survey released by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare was conducted during 2023-24. In this, about 6.79 lakh families from 715 districts of all the states and union territories of the country except Manipur were included. The report gives information about many important indicators related to health, nutrition and population.

The problem of diabetes is increasing rapidly

According to the NFHS-6 report, diabetes among people above 15 years of age in the country. Is growing rapidly. The survey included those people whose blood sugar level was more than 141 mg/dl or who were regularly taking medicines to control it. The report shows that the cases of this disease have increased by about 5 percent in the last few years. Talking about men, there are about 56 crore men above 15 years of age in the country. Of these, about 11.7 crore men are affected by diabetes. Earlier in 2021, this number was around 8.7 crores. While in NFHS-5, 15.6 percent men were suffering from this disease, now this figure has increased to 20.9 percent. The situation among women also remains worrying. At present, about 7.12 crore women of the country are suffering from diabetes, whereas three years ago this number was about 5.4 crore. The rate of diabetes among women has increased from 13.5 percent to 17.8 percent, which represents a significant increase of 4.3 percent.

Obesity And Diabetes Rising Across India: India is currently facing such a health crisis, where on one hand obesity and diabetes are increasing rapidly, while on the other hand malnutrition still remains a big challenge. The latest data from the National Family Health Survey- NFHS-6, 2023-24 shows that two opposite problems related to nutrition exist simultaneously in the country. In many states, people are struggling with overweight and obesity, while a large part of the same population is still suffering from malnutrition.

Increase in cases of obesity

According to the survey, 30.7 percent women and 27.3 percent men in the age group of 15 to 49 years now fall in the overweight or obese category. This growth is much faster than NFHS-5. The situation appears to be especially serious in urban areas, where about 43 percent of women and 36.3 percent of men are affected by obesity or overweight.

Malnutrition problem also increased

On the other hand, the problem of malnutrition seems to be increasing instead of ending. According to the report, almost every fifth adult in the country still falls in the underweight category. The underweight rate among men has increased from 16.2 percent to 19.7 percent, while among women it has increased from 18.7 percent to 19.7 percent. This situation shows that nutritional inequalities still persist.

Diabetes cases also increased

NFHS-6 has also increased the concern regarding diabetes. 17.8 percent of women above 15 years of age were found to have higher than normal blood sugar levels or were taking diabetes medication. This figure was recorded at 20.9 percent in men, that is, every fifth man is dependent on diabetes or its related medicines. This number has increased significantly compared to the previous survey. In the report, the situation in many states appeared more worrying. A significant increase in obesity cases has been recorded in West Bengal, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The problem of malnutrition was seen increasing in states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Assam, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In Uttar Pradesh too, an increase in the cases of obesity, malnutrition and diabetes has been recorded.

Read this also – Summer Fatigue: Feeling tired again and again in summer, know which disease is this a sign of?

What is the situation in Uttar Pradesh?

The rate of diabetes in the state is increasing faster than the national average. The situation is such that now almost every fifth man and every sixth woman in the state is affected by diabetes. According to the survey, the rate of increase in diabetes among women in the entire country has been recorded at 4.3 percent, but in Uttar Pradesh this figure has reached 5.5 percent. The situation among men is also worrying. While the growth rate at the national level is 5.3 percent, in Uttar Pradesh it has been recorded at around 8 percent.

Decline in high BP cases

Some relief has definitely been seen in BP cases. There has been a slight decline in the rate of high blood pressure problem in both men and women, but despite this, almost every fifth adult in the country is still affected by high blood pressure. According to experts, it remains a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke and serious kidney related diseases.

Can You Get Diabetes Even Without Eating Sugar: Nowadays, many people have started considering themselves healthy by drinking tea or coffee without sugar in the morning. They feel that if they give up sugar, the risk of diabetes will also go away. But Dr. Shehla Shaikh, endocrinologist at Saifee Hospital in Mumbai, says that the reality is much more serious than this. Diabetes does not stop just by removing sugar from tea. Many people are falling victim to this disease even after drinking tea without sugar.

Does work get done by giving up tea?

Dr Shehla Shaikh told TOI that many people think that avoiding sugar in tea and coffee will keep them safe from diabetes. Whereas just doing this is not enough. Some other habits affect blood sugar more than this. The real danger lies in our everyday lifestyle. Sitting on a chair from morning till evening, getting less sleep, being under stress and eating processed food is gradually making the body sick from inside. Sitting in front of laptop for hours in offices has now become normal. People hardly leave their seats for 8 to 10 hours. This habit makes the body weak towards insulin.

Does sitting also increase the risk of diabetes?

Research shows that sitting for a long time every day increases the risk of diabetes rapidly. When the body is not active, the muscles are not able to use glucose properly. Due to this, insulin resistance starts increasing and blood sugar gradually starts going out of control. According to Dr. Shehla Shaikh, “Continuous sitting lifestyle has become a major cause of diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. This habit can be as harmful as smoking.”

What problems occur due to lack of sleep?

Not only sitting, lack of sleep also has a deep impact on the body. Today most of the people use mobile phones or keep working till late night. Then get up early in the morning. The body does not get complete rest. It has a direct effect on blood sugar. Studies have found that taking less sleep reduces insulin sensitivity. That means the body is not able to use insulin properly. Along with this, stress hormones like cortisol start increasing in the body, which further worsens the blood sugar.

Read this also- Fire is raining from the sky during the day, sleepless nights too, know from the doctor how dangerous is this?

Why do you have problems without eating sweets?

Stress is also becoming a major cause of diabetes. Due to constant stress, the body releases more glucose. This is the reason why many people start struggling with the problem of high blood sugar even without eating too much sweets. Apart from this, sugar free products available in the market are also confusing people. Just because sugar free is written on the packet does not mean that it is healthy. Many such products contain refined flour, processed oil and high carbohydrates, which can increase blood sugar.

Experts say that just reducing sugar is not enough to avoid diabetes. It is more important to walk a little every day, get up from the seat every hour, eat food rich in fiber and protein, reduce stress and get good sleep for 7 to 8 hours. Because the real difference is not just by giving up sugar in tea, but by changing the entire lifestyle.

Why Eating Every Two Hours May Not Be Healthy: For many years, people were told that eating small meals every two-three hours was the best way to stay fit, control weight and maintain energy throughout the day. People going to office used to carry snack boxes with them, people going to the gym used to eat protein bars between meetings and gradually healthy snacking became a lifestyle. It was believed that if the body continues to get small amounts of energy, the metabolism will remain active and the risk of weight gain will be reduced.

Is eating frequently really beneficial?

But now nutrition science is looking at this habit from a new perspective. Experts say that eating frequently is not always beneficial for the body, especially when people do not pay attention to how many calories they are taking in a day. The problem is not just the frequency of eating, but also the things that people eat during snacking. Packaged snacks, biscuits, sweet drinks and processed foods have now become a daily habit of people.

Does the body get energy by eating continuously?

According to DT Parul Yadav, Chief Dietician, Marengo Asia Hospitals, Gurugram, earlier it was believed that eating small meals frequently helps in losing weight and maintaining energy, but new research is indicating that eating continuously may not be as good for the body as was earlier thought.

Why does weight increase even after eating healthy?

Experts say that eating frequently can increase calories rapidly without realizing it. Biscuits with tea, chips at work, evening coffee or a protein bar after the gym may not seem like a complete meal, but they add hundreds of extra calories throughout the day. This is the reason why many people complain of weight gain despite trying to eat healthy. Experts say that by continuously eating something or the other, people forget to differentiate between real hunger and habit. Many times people keep eating not because of hunger, but because of boredom, stress or just habit.

What is the effect on our body?

It also affects the insulin level in the body. Whenever we eat food, especially sweet or refined things, blood sugar increases and the body releases insulin. If meals are eaten frequently throughout the day, insulin can remain consistently high. According to research, if this happens for a long time, the body’s ability to burn fat can be affected and the risk of insulin resistance can increase. Experts also believe that the digestive system also needs rest. Eating continuously can cause problems like bloating, heaviness and loss of appetite. Instead, a balanced diet rich in protein, fiber, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates helps in keeping you full for longer periods.

Diabetes has become a common disease in today’s lifestyle. This disease is such that a lot of precautions have to be taken regarding eating and drinking. Summer is going on and in such a situation, who does not like cold sugarcane juice? It not only provides relief to the mind and stomach, but also helps in keeping the body hydrated.

However, this question often comes in the mind of diabetes patients whether they can drink it or not? It is said that sugarcane juice is too sweet and can be dangerous for diabetes patients, so let us understand what is the opinion of experts on this.

What is the expert’s opinion?

According to experts, it may be possible for some diabetic patients to consume sugarcane juice, but they should consume it only in controlled quantities. Experts say that it is good for sugar patients that they can eat sugarcane instead of sugarcane juice, because more fiber and protein is found in it, which does not allow your blood sugar level to increase.

Also read: If you do office work on the dining table or sofa, be careful, change this WFH habit quickly.

How much sugar is there in sugarcane juice

According to a news published in Pharmacognosy Reviews, sugarcane juice contains 70-75% water, 13-15% sucrose and 10-15% fiber. Apart from this, sugarcane juice is very effective in the treatment of jaundice, bleeding, dysuria, dysuria and toilet related diseases in India. Although sugarcane juice is natural, it contains very high amount of sugar, which dissolves quickly in the body and can rapidly increase the sugar level in the blood. Let us tell you that one small glass of sugarcane juice i.e. 240 ml of sugarcane juice contains about 50 grams of sugar i.e. 10 teaspoons of sugar.

keep some things in mind

Be it a diabetic patient or a common man, everyone should keep in mind that they should never drink sugarcane juice on an empty stomach. Keep in mind that do not take too much sugarcane juice at one go, it increases the sugar level in the body rapidly. Also, diabetic patients should not include it in their diet without doctor’s advice. Apart from sugarcane juice, there are some healthy options for diabetic patients like coconut water, lemon water without sugar, buttermilk and green tea.

The problem of diabetes is increasing rapidly in India and now its effect is visible in the youth also. According to the ICMR-India Diabetes 2024 study, every sixth diabetes patient in the country is below 40 years of age. Having diabetes at such a young age can cause many serious health problems in the future. One of these is diabetic retinopathy which damages the retina of the eyes. In such a situation, let us tell you today how it first affects the eyes of young diabetes patients and what is diabetic retinopathy.

What is diabetic retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a condition in which the small blood cells of the retina become weak due to constantly changing blood sugar levels. The retina is the part of the eye that detects light and helps in seeing. When blood sugar increases, these cells start swelling or bleeding and gradually new abnormal cells start forming which affects the eyesight. If it is not detected on time, it can pose a risk of complete blindness.

The highest risk is increasing in young patients

This risk is higher in patients who develop diabetes at a young age, because the duration of the disease is longer. According to the data of All India Ophthalmological Society 2025, about 12 to 15 percent of Indian diabetic patients below 40 years of age start showing early symptoms of retinopathy. Regarding this, experts say that the retina is the most sensitive part of the eye and the first effects of diabetes are visible here. There are no symptoms in the initial stage, but the damage starts from within. Therefore, it is very important to keep blood sugar under control and get your eyes examined at least once a year.

Increasing danger due to modern lifestyle

Persistent high blood sugar levels affect the supply of oxygen and nutrients to the retina. This increases oxidative stress and inflammation in the eye cells. At the same time, today’s lifestyle like eating processed food, increasing screen time, stress and lack of sleep also increases this problem. Apart from this, blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking habit further weaken the retina cells.

How to protect eyes?

To keep your eyes safe, first of all keep your blood sugar level under control.

Include foods like fiber, green vegetables, citrus fruits, fish, flaxseed and walnuts in your diet.

Eat whole grains and millets instead of refined carbohydrates.

Do 30 minutes of physical activity daily.

Drink enough water and sleep for 7 to 8 hours.
