Counting of votes for municipal elections continues in Maharashtra. It has become clear from the trends and declared results that Muslim candidates have performed stronger than different political parties in this election. There are many wards where the competition was considered very tough, where Muslim candidates have registered their political presence by winning.

The performance of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen i.e. AIMIM in Mankhurd-Govandi belt was the most discussed. AIMIM candidates have won in direct contests in many wards of this area. Mehjabeen Atiq Ahmed was victorious in ward number 134 from Mankhurd Mandla village, while Irshad Khan won in ward number 135. Apart from this, the victory of Khairunisa Hussain from ward number 145 has further strengthened the position of the party.

Muslim candidates of Congress

Muslim candidates associated with the Congress Party have also performed impressively in this municipal election. Ashraf Azmi strengthened the presence of Congress by winning from Kurla West region. Whereas in ward number 33, Qamar Jahan Moin Siddiqui, sister of Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh, won. These results are being seen as an indication of Congress’s minority support in urban areas.

Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction’s winner

The victory of Muslim candidates from Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction and other parties has also come to light. Shakeena Shaikh won from ward number 124, while Iram Siddiqui got the trust of voters in ward number 201. These results indicate that voters gave priority to the local hold and grassroots work of the candidate more than the party.

When were the Maharashtra municipal elections held?

Voting was held on Thursday (January 15, 2026) for 2,869 seats in 893 wards of Maharashtra municipal bodies, which include 227 seats in Mumbai. A total of 15,931 candidates are in the fray in these 29 municipal bodies, where there are 3.48 crore eligible voters. After the voting was over, State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare said that about 50 percent voting was recorded in 29 municipal bodies. Officials said on Friday that 52.94 percent voting was recorded in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections, which is less than 55.53 percent voting in the last elections held in 2017.

The result of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections is to be declared on Friday (January 16, 2026). Earlier, information about crorepati candidates has come to light from the affidavits filed by the candidates in the elections. Talking about the richest candidates in BMC elections, the first name that comes up is Makrand Narvekar, who is a BJP leader and brother of Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar. 47-year-old Makarand Narvekar has been a two-time corporator and is a lawyer by profession. According to his affidavit, he has declared assets worth Rs 124 crore. If compared with previous years, there is a tremendous increase in his wealth.

Makrand Narvekar’s assets were worth Rs 3.67 crore in the year 2012. It increased to Rs 6.32 crore in the year 2017 and Rs 124 crore in the year 2026. It has also been revealed in the affidavit that Makrand Narvekar purchased 27 pieces of land in Alibaug between October 2022 and November 2025. He says that due to big infrastructure projects like Atal Setu (Mumbai Trans Harbor Link) and Ro-Ro ferry service, there has been a huge increase in the prices of these properties.

35 percent candidates are millionaires

Makrand Narvekar is not alone. About 35 percent of the candidates in BMC elections are crorepatis. In this, the candidate from Ward 225 is Harshita Narvekar. His declared assets are Rs 63.62 crore. In the year 2017 this figure was Rs 10.74 crore. Harshita is the sister-in-law of Makrand Narvekar. The name of Samajwadi Party candidate from Kalina, Sana Abbas Qureshi, is also in this list, whose declared assets are Rs 60.3 crore. She is among the richest women candidates of BMC elections. Samadhan Sarvankar, son of former MLA Sada Sarvankar is also in the list of crorepati candidates. His declared assets are Rs 46.59 crore, which was Rs 9.43 crore in the year 2017. The declared total assets of former mayor Kishori Pednekar is Rs 5 crore 26 lakh. In the year 2017, there were assets worth Rs 1 crore 61 lakh 53 thousand. That means his wealth has increased by approximately Rs 3.65 crore in about 8 years. In this way, his wealth has increased by more than Rs 7 crore. Yamini Jadhav (ward number 209) has assets worth Rs 14 crore 57 lakh.

Property of former Shiv Sena mayor

Priya Saravankar is the candidate from Dadar Shivaji Park, whose declared assets are Rs 12.16 crore. The declared assets of former Shiv Sena Mayor Shraddha Jadhav are Rs 46.34 crore. She was the Mayor of Mumbai from 2009 to 2012. While on one hand there are candidates with assets worth crores, on the other hand there are some people whose assets are very limited, but their morale is high. In this, the name of independent candidate from Bandra, Ashok Gupta, who sells paan by profession. His declared assets were Rs 1.6 crore, which included SRA house, savings and wife’s jewellery.

Voting ended at 5:30 pm on Thursday (January 15, 2025) for 29 municipal corporations, including Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the richest municipal body in the country. The fate of a total of 1,700 candidates for 227 wards in the Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections is to be decided shortly. Counting of votes will start from 10 am on Friday (January 16, 2026), whereas usually the opening of votes starts from 8 am.

BMC is Asia’s largest municipal body with a budget of more than Rs 74,000 crore in 2025-26, due to which this election is being watched across the country. State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare said that more than 3.48 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in these municipal bodies of major urban centers of Maharashtra. Out of 29 municipal corporations, Ichalkaranji and Jalna municipal bodies are newly formed bodies.

The last election of Mumbai Municipal Corporation was held in the year 2017, whose term ended in 2022. However, elections were never held again after that and the matter reached the Supreme Court. This election is taking place at a time when Shiv Sena and NCP have broken and the party is divided into two groups. There is an alliance between BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde faction). BJP is contesting on 137 seats while Shinde’s Shiv Sena has fielded candidates on 90 seats.

On the other hand, Thackeray Brothers have come together. Shiv Sena UBT has formed alliance with MNS. Shiv Sena (UBT) contested on 163 seats and MNS on 52 seats. Congress formed an alliance with Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA). Congress is contesting on 143 seats and VBA on 46 seats. Ajit Pawar’s NCP has not joined hands with any party and is contesting elections on 94 seats.

There are many such VIP seats in this election, on which everyone is keeping an eye. Kishori Pednekar (Shiv Sena UBT) from Ward 193 Khar-Santa Cruz, Ravi Raja (BJP) from Ward 205 Goregaon West, Tejasvi Ghoshalkar (BJP) from Ward 179 Bandra West, Harshvardhan Sapkal (Congress) from Ward 214 Andheri East, Rahul Shewale (Shiv Sena Shinde faction) from Ward 224 Mulund West. It is included in those seats where the contest is expected to be interesting.
