The horrific mass shooting that took place on December 14 at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia shocked the entire country. This is considered to be one of the most horrific incidents in Australia in nearly 30 years, in which 15 people lost their lives. The attack occurred during the Jewish community’s Hanukkah festival, when people were celebrating on the beach. After this painful incident, the family of Australian cricket team player Usman Khawaja also became a victim of hatred and racist comments.

Usman Khwaja’s family received hatred

Usman Khawaja, who comes from the Muslim community and is currently playing the Ashes series, has not publicly reacted to these comments. However, his wife Rachel Khawaja has shared screenshots of some very objectionable messages on social media, in which their innocent daughters were also targeted.

Rachel wrote, “I have collected a small sample of some of the messages we have received over the past week. I wish I could say that this is all new, but the truth is that we have had to face this kind of hate before. After this incident, these comments have increased even more.”

In these messages, his daughters were called with hateful terms like “future school attackers”. Some people even asked the family to “go back” to Pakistan. These comments have once again exposed the Islamophobia and racism present in the society.

Rachel Khawaja appealed to people to remain united, saying, “Today more than ever, it is important that we all stand together. Be it anti-Semitism, Islamophobia or racism. We must not accept any kind of hatred.”

Usman Khawaja and cricket world’s reaction on the attack

Earlier, Usman Khawaja had strongly condemned the Bondi Beach attack. He had written on social media that this incident is heart breaking and people have lost their lives unnecessarily. He expressed condolences to the victims’ families and the Bondi community. Khawaja also shared a statement from the Jewish Council of Australia, which called the attack horrific and shocking.

Cricket Australia (CA) and England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) also issued a joint statement expressing grief over this tragedy. Both boards expressed solidarity with the victims, their families and the Jewish community.

Australian team captain Pat Cummins also expressed deep sorrow over this incident and appealed to the people to donate blood. He said that it is very important to support each other in this difficult time.

Australian PM Anthony Albanese has apologized to the Jewish community regarding the Bondi Beach attack. He said he felt deep responsibility for the incident and promised that his government would never allow terrorists to divide Australian society. On December 14, two father-son duo opened fire on the Jewish community celebrating Hanukkah on Bondi Beach, killing 15 people and injuring many.

According to IANS report, Albanese has also responded to the allegations of Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu. He said that there is no link to this incident with recognition of Palestine. Netanyahu said in a statement on December 15 that the Australian government did nothing to stop anti-Semitism and rewarded terrorism by recognizing Palestine, which led to the attack.

Australia recognized Palestine as a state in September, as part of an international effort to achieve a two-state solution, a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages by Hamas. Netanyahu said that Australia’s policies are weakness instead of weakness and appeasement instead of appeasement. On Monday (December 22, 2025), Albanese responded to these allegations, while talking to journalists on the Bondi Beach attack, saying that he did not agree with any such thing. There is no link to this attack with recognition of Palestine.

Albanese said, ‘This attack had the imprint of ISIS. We know that ISIS is an ideology, a distorted form of Islam that fundamentally has nothing to do with the recognition of any nation, it wants a caliphate. He said he was now able to provide a more comprehensive response after the court released more details on Monday morning.

PM Albanese further said, ‘This is an extremist ideology that wants a caliphate as its goal. Now there is evidence… some of which, of course, is not public yet, and I don’t want to interfere with those investigations, but it is very clear that this is anti-Semitism. It is clear that this is an extremist position of a distorted form of Islam, close to ISIS. These people are not even shy about their inspiration. According to Albanese, people will have to keep an eye on those facts.

On 16 December, Albanese announced that the government would criminalize hate speech and incitement to violence, ban Nazi salutes, increase funding to protect Jewish sites and tighten gun laws.

Australia Bondi Beach Shooting: On December 14, two terrorists started firing indiscriminately on Sydney’s Bondi Beach. 12 people lost their lives in this firing and some injured were admitted to the hospital. Veteran England cricketer Michael Vaughan has told that when this attack took place on Bondi Beach, he was stranded in a restaurant at the same place.

Michael Vaughan is currently a part of the broadcasting team of the Ashes 2025-26 series, for this series he is staying in Australia. Michael has shared his experience while posting on X. People who witnessed this incident with their own eyes said that at around 6:40 in the evening, two people got out of the car and started firing indiscriminately.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has described this incident as inspired by terrorism. When this attack took place on Bondi Beach, a person showed bravery by snatching the gun from the terrorist and made him fall down. In this case, the Australian police has arrested a person, whose name is said to be Navid Akram. Akram is currently in police custody, while another terrorist was killed in an encounter.

Ashes series status

2 matches have been completed in the Ashes series, host Australia has won both these matches and is taking a 2-0 lead in the series. Australia won the first Test played in Perth by 8 wickets and then Australia won by 8 wickets at Gabba ground also. The third Ashes Test is to be played in Adelaide from 17 December.
