This 17-year-old boy living in the Netherlands was injured while playing football, after which he was admitted to the hospital for knee surgery. The surgery went completely smoothly and according to the doctors, there were no complications during or after the operation. But the real surprise came when the teen woke up from anesthesia. As soon as he regained consciousness, he stopped speaking Dutch and started talking only in English. Not only this, he kept saying again and again that he was in the United States. He also refused to recognize his parents and was neither able to understand nor speak Dutch.

Doctors were surprised

Initially the nurses at the hospital thought it could be emergency delirium that occurs during recovery from anesthesia. This is a condition in which the patient remains confused for some time. But despite the passage of time, there was no improvement in the condition of the teenager. According to the medical report, the boy had no prior mental or neurological history. There was also no record of any serious illness in the family, except for a few cases of depression in the mother’s family.

When the doctors examined it in depth, they found it to be a case of foreign language syndrome. This is a very rare condition in which a person suddenly leaves his mother tongue and starts speaking in another language. This is different from foreign accent syndrome, where the language remains the same but the pronunciation changes. In this case the teenager had completely adapted to English.
