This time a big upheaval is being seen in the politics of Tamil Nadu. In view of the upcoming assembly elections, not only DMK and Congress but even AIADMK and BJP have not made any Brahmin their candidate. This is the first time in nearly three and a half decades that AIADMK has not given ticket to any Brahmin.

What is the impact of Dravidian movement?
Due to the Dravidian movement, Brahmin politics has not only been marginalized in this southern state, but in this time’s assembly elections, major parties have also refrained from giving tickets to Brahmins and even BJP, which enjoys the support of Brahmins, has also distanced itself from it. BJP did not declare a Brahmin candidate on any of the 27 assembly seats under its quota.

In such a situation, questions are being raised whether all this is the result of the changing politics in Tamil Nadu or is it a political compulsion. Let us tell you that out of 234 assembly seats in Tamil Nadu, DMK is contesting on 164 seats and Congress on 28 seats in the India Alliance, but neither of them gave tickets to Brahmins. Apart from this, their allies Left, VCK and Muslim League have also not trusted any Brahmin.

In the NDA alliance, AIADMK is contesting on 178 seats, BJP is contesting on 27 seats and PMK on 18 seats, but no Brahmin candidate has been fielded on even a single seat.

Jayalalitha’s party also kept distance
The interesting thing is that Jayalalithaa, the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, belonged to the Brahmin community, but even after almost 10 years of her death, her party did not field any Brahmin. In 2021, AIADMK had made former Director General of Police R Nataraj, who comes from Brahmin community, its candidate, but this time he too was not given the ticket.

Who gave tickets to Brahmins?
Actor-turned-politician Thalapathy Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has fielded two Brahmin candidates. Apart from this, Tamilar Katchi, the party of Tamil nationalist leader Seeman, has given tickets to 6 Brahmins. Both these parties have chosen areas like Mayilapur and Srirangam, where the number of Brahmin voters is high. Analysts say that the reason behind NTK fielding 6 Brahmins is that Seeman has adopted anti-Periyar stance in Tamil Nadu. While participating in a program related to RSS, he said that he will work to demolish the Dravidian wall. They also openly use caste and identity in their political messages.

What do political pundits say?
According to the report of Times of India, political analyst Arun Kumar says that AIADMK took support from the Brahmin community for many decades but there has been a change in recent years. After the death of Jayalalitha, Brahmin voters have inclined in favor of BJP. Due to this, AIADMK has distanced itself from Brahmins, but due to BJP’s abstinence, people are definitely worried.

What is the population of Brahmins?
The share of Brahmins in the total population of Tamil Nadu is only 3 percent. Political parties give priority to those castes which are in large numbers. Muthuraiyar, Thevar, Vanniyar and Gounder. Due to small numbers, Brahmins are not seen as a vote bank. Apart from this, 69 percent reservation is applicable in the state. Dravidian parties have woven their politics around the upliftment of OBCs and Dalits.

In Dravidian politics, Brahmins are considered Aryans or outsiders, while non-Brahmins are considered original Dravidians. This is why it is a big challenge in itself for a Brahmin leader to prove himself as a protector of purely Tamil interests.
