The air of Delhi-NCR is continuously becoming poisonous. In such a situation, due to continuously increasing pollution in the air, the condition of people’s lungs is worsening. At the same time, the doctor says that the microscopic particles present in air pollution like PM 2.5, PM 10, nitrogen dioxide and ozone are gradually damaging the lungs. The risk increases even more for people who have the habit of smoking. In such a situation, the question arises that if the lungs get damaged due to pollution or smoking, can they recover again? So today let us tell you that if the lungs get damaged due to smoking habit or pollution, can they be cured again or not and what do the experts say about it.

How does pollution harm the lungs?

According to doctors, the pollutants present in the air reach the deep parts of the lungs through breath. This causes irritation, inflammation and oxidative stress which weakens the structure and capacity of the lungs. This risk is greatest for children, the elderly and people suffering from diseases like heart or asthma. The initial signs of lung damage include frequent dry cough or burning sensation in the throat. Apart from this, even doing light work causes shortness of breath. At the same time, heaviness in the chest or wheezing sound is also an early sign of bad lungs. Increasing mucus and feeling tired are also signs of bad lungs.

Can lungs recover after being damaged?

Experts say that the lungs have the ability to repair themselves. When a person lives in clean air, stays away from pollution or smoking, the functioning of the lungs can gradually improve. At the same time, improvement can be seen in the lungs within a few months to a few years. However, if the damage is very deep or chronic, such as COPD, it is difficult for the lungs to recover completely. But with proper treatment and precautions, its risk can be reduced to a great extent. According to experts, if a person quits smoking or tries to avoid pollution, the lung capacity starts improving within two weeks to 3 months.

What to do for lung health?

Stay away from smoking and second hand smoke.

Go out wearing an N95 or KN95 mask.

Use an air purifier with HEPA filter at home.

Do deep breathing or diaphragmatic breathing exercises.

Drink enough water throughout the day, so that the dirt accumulated in the lungs can be cleared.

Reduce outdoor activity during pollution days.

Delhi Air Pollution: After Diwali, Delhi’s air has become quite polluted. Now some people have got relief, because AQI has come below 200 in most parts. But this is also no less than dangerous. Especially for those people who are suffering from chronic lung disease, this is not at all right for them. According to experts, this condition is very dangerous not only for children and elderly people but also for patients of chronic lung disease, asthma, bronchitis and ILD. Let us tell you when people suffering from chronic lung disease should leave Delhi.

How does pollution affect the lungs?

Dr. Randeep Guleria, pulmonologist of AIIMS, tells that the microscopic particles (PM2.5 and PM10) present in the air of Delhi reach inside the lungs and cause inflammation there. “For people who already have asthma or COPD, their lungs become weaker when they come in contact with these particles. Due to this, symptoms like shortness of breath, cough and chest tightness increase rapidly.” Experts say that patients who have chronic lung disease should stay away from polluted areas for at least 2 to 3 weeks during November-December. According to who, very small particles present in the air like PM2.5 and PM10 are very microscopic. These are so light that they pass through the nose or windpipe and reach inside the lungs. Going there, these particles cause inflammation and oxidative stress, due to which the lung cells start weakening.

What to do if it is not possible to leave Delhi?

It is not easy for everyone to leave the city. In such a situation, the doctor gives some important suggestions.

Use an air purifier with HEPA filter at home.

Avoid exercising in the open in the morning and evening, because pollution is more at that time.

Wear an N95 or N99 mask while going out.

Include steam and hot water in your daily routine.

Keep plants like snake plant or peace lily inside the house, which clean the air.

The air quality in Delhi is likely to deteriorate as pollutants start settling down due to stubble burning and cold winds. Doctors say that even if AQI level remains above 200 continuously, the lung capacity of chronic patients starts decreasing, and the risk of chest infection increases.

The problem of sleeplessness has become very common nowadays. This affects not only our health but also on our daily life. Recently, a prestigious heart care center in Britain and the Research Institute has done a research that has brought a new hope for people struggling with sleep problems. According to this research, the conch shell has proved to be very effective in sleeplessness and within 6 months, positive results have been seen by this method.

Conch shelling process and benefits

Playing conch is an old traditional technique, which has now been scientifically certified. According to research, playing conch strengthens the muscles of the throat and palate. This process improves blood flow in the body and gives peace to the brain. Also, playing conch improves the circulation of air stored in the nose, which makes it easier to breathe and improve oxygen levels. Thus, this method is helpful in increasing the quality of sleep.

Surprising results found in research

During the research, the researchers practiced the patients suffering from the problem of sleeplessness to play conch shells for at least 5 days daily. After the regular process of 6 months, there was a improvement in the sleep pattern of patients. Research also found that 34% of the patients adopting this method got deep and good sleep, while the number of patients with problems of sleep is more than that.

What do scientists have to say?

Dr. Bakshi, who is the main scientist of this research, says that playing the conch reduces stress in the body and transmits positive energy in the brain. This provides mental peace and solves the problem of sleep. In the process of ringing the conch, the muscles of the throat are exercised, which is helpful in opening the path of breathing. This relieves breathing problems and improves sleep.

Who and how to play conch?

People suffering from sleep problems, especially those who are struggling with snoring (snoring) and other respiratory problems, can avail this technique. Initially this practice should be done under the supervision of a specialist so that the correct technique can be learned. Gradually it can be included in everyday routine. The practice of playing conch not only gives relief in sleep problem but it also reduces mental stress.

A recent research revealed a shocking picture about the health of children all over the world. According to the report, the risk of asthma has increased considerably among children born between 2008 and 2017 and it is estimated that about 1.5 crore children may have asthma. This figure is not only worrisome, but also shows that our future generations are facing a serious health challenge.

What is asthma and why is the danger growing?

Asthma is a disease related to the lungs, in which the windpipe swells and shrinks. This brings sounds like difficulty in breathing, cough, chest tightness and wheezing while breathing.

There can be many reasons behind the increasing cases of asthma in children:

Increased air pollution: Air pollution has reached dangerous levels in many cities of India. The fine particles and poisonous gases present in the air damage the lungs of children, which increases the risk of asthma.

Allergies and Environmental Factors: Dust particles, polene (particles), pets of pet dandruff, fungi and some chemical children can cause allergies, which can trigger asthma.

Lifestyle changes: Instead of playing outside, spending more time indoors, especially on mobile and TV, is reducing their physical activities, which weakens their disease immunity.

Changing food: Excessive intake of junk food and processed food is also affecting children’s health, which is increasing the risk of diseases like allergies and asthma.

Genetics: If any of the parents have asthma or any other allergic disease, then the chances of getting asthma in children increases.

Effect of asthma on children

Asthma is not just respiratory disease, it can affect the whole life of children.

Effect on studies: Due to asthma, children may have to take leave from school, which leads to their studies. They are unable to focus in class even if there is difficulty in taking it.

Reduction in physical activities: Children suffering from asthma often shy away from participating in sports or other physical activities, affecting their physical development.

Effect on mental health: Repeated attacks of asthma or feeling difficulty in breathing can also give rise to mental problems like enzyme and depression in children.

Danger of hospitalization: Children may also have to be hospitalized due to serious attack of asthma.
