During the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit held in China, there was a cordial meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping. The two leaders insisted on strengthening the relationship and moving forward. However, India maintained their strong opposition to China’s ambitious Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). In this summit, most countries including Türkiye, Pakistan and Iran supported BRI, but India was the only country that refused to support it.

During the SCO meeting held in Beijing, India once again refused to support China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project. India has not been in favor of BRI in any SCO summit or meeting so far. India’s objection to this project has been maintained for a long time and its stand is still the same.

These countries support BRI

Many important decisions were mentioned in the manifesto released after the SCO summit ended in the city of Tianjin, China. It also included China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which was supported by countries such as Russia, Belarus, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. However, only India did not support the project among all the countries involved.

Why does India object to Bri?

India has always objected to Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The biggest reason for this is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). India has a clear attitude that PoK is an integral part of it and any third country has no right to do construction work there.

At the SCO Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi showed a tough stand on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). In the presence of Xi Jinping and Shahbaz Sharif, PM Modi said without naming that it is mandatory to honor the sovereignty of another country in any project, otherwise he has no importance.

PM Modi further said that the connectivity that sidelines sovereignty does not instill trust nor does it mean. India believes that strong connectivity not only increases trade, but also opens new opportunities for development and mutual trust. From this point of view, India is working on projects like Chabahar port and International North-South Transport Corridor (Instc).

At the 25th summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) held in Tianjin city of China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing the plane session, made a big statement on connectivity and sovereignty. PM Modi said that connectivity should always respect sovereignty and regional integrity. This is the basic principle of SCO Charter. Connectivity that bypasses sovereignty cannot be trusted and has no importance.

This statement is directly considered a gesture on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which passes through Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). This project is the most important part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and India has been opposing it for a long time. PM Modi further said that India believes that strong connectivity ensures not only business, but also trust and development. From this point of view, India is working on the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (Instc), which will strengthen connectivity to Afghanistan and Central Asia.

He said that India has always been trying that the SCO is not limited to governments, but it should be linked to common people, youth, researchers and startups so that the organization’s reach and impact can increase.

What is Bri?

BRI (BELT and Road Initiative), which is called One Belt, One Road in Chinese, is a major global initiative of China. It started with the objective that Chinese companies should manufacture transport, energy and other infrastructure projects abroad. These projects are funded by loans from Chinese development banks.

Its main goal is to improve connectivity to the rest of the world of China and thus the business and economy get strengthened. In a way, it can be called the new Silk Road of the 21st century, which creates a trade route from China to Europe via Middle East.

Chinese President Xi Jinping announced the idea in 2013 during visits to Kazakhstan and Indonesia. After this, this initiative progressed rapidly and many big projects were created under it, such as railways in Kenya and Laos and power stations in Pakistan and Indonesia.

Why is India against Bri?

India has opposed BRI from the beginning and the biggest reason for this is the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). CPEC is the flagship project of Bri, which passes through Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). India believes that this is a violation of its sovereign rights, because Pok is an integral part of India.

The Government of India says that it has repeatedly lodged a formal protest against the countries concerned on this issue and asked them to stop such activities. The Ministry of External Affairs has made it clear that the government’s stand is clear and stable. At the same time, the Government of India continuously keeps a close watch on every development related to this project and takes all the necessary steps to protect the security and integrity of the country.

China-pakistan-bangladesh meeting: China, Pakistan and Bangladesh have agreed to carry forward cooperation based on good neighbors, equality and principles of mutual belief in the inaugural tripartite meeting of officials of their foreign ministries.

China’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sun Waidong, Bangladesh acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddiqui and Additional Foreign Secretary of Pakistan Imran Ahmed Siddiqui attended a meeting held in Kunming, the capital of the southern Yunnan province of China.

China, Cooperation between Pakistan and Bangladesh is beneficial for the people of the three countries- Vedong

On Friday (June 20), China’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement. In the statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said that on Thursday (June 19), Pakistani Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch participated in the first phase of the meeting through video link. China’s new strategic initiative to bring two isolated South Asian countries living in the neighborhood of India came a month after a similar tripartite meeting with Pakistan and Afghanistan.

According to the statement, in his address, Chinese Deputy Foreign Minister Sun Waidong said that both Bangladesh and Pakistan are good neighbors, good friends and good partners of China and are important partners in high quality belt and road (BRI) cooperation.

Sun, who was a Chinese ambassador to Pakistan and India, said, “The cooperation between China, Pakistan and Bangladesh is in line with the common interests of the people of the three countries and it can contribute to regional peace, stability, development and prosperity. The statement said that the three parties said that the three parties have exchanged wide ideas on China-Pakistan-Bangladesh tripartite cooperation and they have exchanged a work group during the meeting to create a working group during meeting Agreed

Mohammad Yunus engaged in strengthening relations with China and seeking help

According to the statement, he also emphasized that China-Bangladesh-Pakistan cooperation is based on true polynomialism and open regionalism, which is not targeted on any third party. The tripartite talks of Thursday (June 19) took place at a time when Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor Mohammad Yunus is strengthening his relations with China and seeking help from Beijing on various fronts, which is clearly an attempt to reduce India’s dependence on India.

Mohammad Yunus established close relations with Pakistan

Yunus took charge last year after the Sheikh Hasina government was overthrown. Yunus has also tried to establish a close relationship with Pakistan and has established relations with Pakistan for the first time with Bangladesh, separated after the 1971 war.

Chinese Deputy Fund Minister met the Acting Deputy Prime Minister of Afghanistan

The statement said that during the meeting in the three countries Kunming, good neighbors, equality and mutual trust, openness and inclusion, shared development and the principles of mutual beneficial cooperation agreed to pursue tripartite cooperation. In Kunming, Sun also met Acting Deputy Prime Minister Haji Mawalvi Abdul Salam Hanfi of the Interim Government of Afghanistan and also held bilateral meetings with Ruhul Alam Siddiqui and Imran Ahmed Siddiqui. A statement by Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said that Baloch appreciated the Chinese side for organizing the inaugural meeting of the tripartite system.
