India is going to host the BRICS summit this year. The 18th BRICS conference to be held in 2026 will be held in India. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to attend this big international event. If this happens, then once again the leaders of Russia, India and China will be seen on one platform, which is considered very important in global politics.

Earlier, on 28 April 2026, a meeting of Defense Ministers of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) was held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. During this period, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh had met the Defense Ministers of Russia and China separately. In these meetings, India and China had agreed to handle the border dispute and reduce tension. After this, hopes for improvement in relations between the two countries have increased.

Strong defense ties between India and Russia

India and Russia have long had strong defense relations. Russia has been supplying fighter aircraft, missiles and submarines to India. There was tension in relations with China after the Eastern Ladakh dispute of 2020, but now efforts are being made to normalize the situation through talks. When the leaders of India, Russia and China appeared together on the SCO platform, the world’s attention was drawn to this trio. Now such a picture is expected to emerge in the BRICS conference also. The schedule of Russian President Putin’s visit to India is considered almost fixed, while official information regarding the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping has not yet been received. It is believed that if he comes to India, it will be his visit to India after seven years.

India’s independent foreign policy

For India, this situation reflects the policy of strategic balance. On one hand, India is maintaining its old relations with Russia and on the other hand it is also continuing talks with China. This is considered to be a part of India’s independent foreign policy and multi-alignment strategy. Through BRICS, India, Russia and China are also discussing steps like trade in local currency, new payment system and reducing dependence on the dollar. This may impact America’s global strategy.

matter of tension for Pakistan

The increasing closeness of BRICS can also be a cause of concern for Pakistan. Pakistan has been considering China as its closest ally for a long time, but if China moves towards improving relations with India, then Pakistan’s position may weaken. At the same time, India’s increasing role in forums like BRICS and SCO can further isolate Pakistan at the regional level. If there is a separate meeting of the leaders of India, Russia and China in the BRICS 2026 conference, then it will give a big political message to the world that the global balance of power is no longer America-centric only.
