Broccoli Farming: Nowadays, people are often bored of eating cauliflower and cabbage every day in their homes. In such a situation, the demand for broccoli is increasing rapidly these days, from gym goers to big hotels and restaurants. This is the reason why now farmers are also abandoning the cultivation of cauliflower and cabbage and cultivating broccoli. This crop is becoming a profitable deal for the farmers. The special thing is that the price of broccoli in the market is many times higher than that of normal cabbage, due to which the income of the farmers is increasing. According to agricultural experts, by adopting the right technology, farmers can earn profits up to lakhs of rupees from broccoli in a season.

Why is the demand for broccoli increasing?

Broccoli is considered a super food. Many nutrients like fiber, iron, calcium, vitamin A, B and C are found in it. Its demand is continuously increasing among health conscious people, gym going youth and hotels and restaurants in big cities. This is the reason why cauliflower is sold at Rs 10 to 20 per kg in the market. Whereas the price of broccoli reaches Rs 50 to Rs 150 per kg. The biggest feature of broccoli is that it gets ready in 60 to 90 days, which means farmers can earn good profits by planting several crops of broccoli in a year.

When and how to cultivate broccoli?

The climate is considered best for the cultivation of broccoli. In North India, its nursery is prepared between September to November. Some farmers sow it in January-February. A temperature of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius is considered suitable for the cultivation of broccoli. Sandy loam soil with good drainage is best for its cultivation. For the cultivation of broccoli, the field should be plowed two to three times and rotten cow dung or vermicompost should be mixed in it. It is considered necessary for the pH value of soil to be between 6 to 7. According to experts, farmers can cultivate improved varieties like Palam Samriddhi, Ganesh Broccoli, K-One, Green Head and Italian Green Sprouting. Before this, the seeds are prepared in the nursery and after about 25 to 30 days the plants are planted in the field.

Irrigation and care method of broccoli

Broccoli crop does not require much water, but there should be moisture in the field. Drip irrigation is considered best for this, because it saves water and the plants also get adequate moisture. According to agricultural experts, broccoli is often prone to diamond back mite and blight disease. In such a situation, farmers can keep the crop safe by using neem oil, cow urine or organic pesticides. Regular monitoring of the crop and timely weeding improves production.
