Now a new history has been created among the brave soldiers protecting the country’s borders. The Air Wing of the Border Security Force (BSF) has got a woman flight engineer for the first time in its long journey of more than 50 years. This achievement has been achieved by Inspector Bhavana Choudhary, who has made not only BSF but the entire country proud.

It was a very special moment for BSF when Director General Daljit Singh Chaudhary presented flying badges to Inspector Bhavana Chaudhary and four other male officers. With this honour, Bhavna Chaudhary’s name got registered in the pages of history.

Two months of hard training, new flight of success

Inspector Bhavna Chaudhary did not achieve this position just like that. He and four other officers completed two months of rigorous and intensive training under the guidance of BSF Air Wing trainers. During this training which started in the month of August, he was given practical experience of flying and technical work for 130 hours.

During this time, he gained not only theory but also experience of working in real conditions, especially during the floods in Punjab and other states, when relief work was being carried out through helicopter missions. According to BSF officials, these missions helped Bhavana and her colleagues to deeply understand the challenges and responsibilities associated with flying.

Inspired by Air Force, BSF started its training

There was a long-standing shortage of flight engineers for Mi-17 helicopters in the BSF air wing. Three officers of the first batch were trained by the Indian Air Force, but due to some reason the second batch could not get training slots in the Air Force.

After this, BSF started its internal training program with permission from the Home Ministry, so that it could prepare its own officers for this special role. The result of this initiative is that five officers including Bhavana Chaudhary have now become fully trained flight engineers.

BSF Air Wing flying in the sky since 1969

BSF was entrusted with the responsibility of the Aviation Unit of the Home Ministry from the year 1969. Since then, this wing has served in many difficult areas of the country, be it the desert of Rajasthan, the snowy valleys of Kashmir or the dense forests of the North-East. The air wing of BSF not only maintains surveillance in the border areas but also plays an important role in missions like disaster relief, medical evacuation and humanitarian assistance.
