According to the Panchang, the date of Vaishakh Purnima or Buddha Purnima will begin on May 11 at 8:01 pm and will end at 10:25 pm on May 12. According to Udayatithi, Buddha Purnima will be celebrated on 12 May. On this day, Chandrodaya i.e. the time of the moon will be at 6:57 pm.

The Mahaparinirvan of Gautama Buddha also took place in Kushinagar on the day of Vaishakh Purnima. According to the legend, Lord Buddha’s real name was Siddharth. He was a prince. Siddharth did hard practice for seven years in search of truth. Finally, on the day of Vaishakh Purnima, he got knowledge under the Bodhi tree. On this day, he became Lord Buddha from Prince Siddharth.

For this reason, Vaishakh Purnima is considered to be the day of the new birth of Lord Buddha. Since then it came to be called Buddha Purnima. It is believed that Lord Buddha broke his fast by eating kheer on this day, so Kheer is made on this day and Lord Buddha is offered as offerings.
