Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai said that he follows Buddhism, but has not studied any religion in depth. Describing himself as completely secular, he said that he believes in all religions – Hindu, Sikh, Muslim, Christian.

Considered humanity and the Constitution above religion.
Speaking at a program, he told that he got this idea from his father, who was a follower of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. Gavai said that whenever the family got information about any Dargah, they used to go there also.

CJI said before leaving the Supreme Court
This speech was given at the farewell ceremony organized by the Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA). CJI Gavai is retiring on 23 November and 22 November is his last working day in the Supreme Court.

What I am today is because of the Constitution and Dr. Ambedkar – BR Gavai
CJI Gavai, who comes from the Dalit community, said that his entire journey was possible because of the Constitution and Dr. Ambedkar. He said, ‘Whatever I am today is because of this institution (Supreme Court). A child who studied sitting on the floor in a municipal school could never have imagined that he would reach this far. I always tried to follow the four values of the Constitution – justice, liberty, equality and fraternity.

Supreme Court is not just an institution of CJI but of all judges – Gavai
Gavai said that the Supreme Court should not be an individual-centric institution. He said that I never took decisions alone. Every decision was taken with the participation of the full court and all the judges. The Supreme Court is a big institution and judges, lawyers, registry and staff are all equally important in it.

Mention of big decision on calling lawyers by investigating agencies
In the program, SCAORA President Vipin Nair thanked CJI Gavai for taking cognizance of the issue of lawyers being summoned by the investigating agencies. In an important decision of October 31, the Supreme Court had said that agencies like ED cannot summon lawyers on the basis of their legal advice.

The movement on Wednesday (24 September 2025), demanding state status to Ladakh, became violent. During this time there was arson and clash on the roads, in which four people died and at least 80 people, including 40 policemen, were injured. In the year 2019, Ladakh got the status of Union Territory. However, if we talk about the population of Ladakh, then the main religion of Ladakh is Buddhist. About 77% of Ladakh’s population is Buddhist. According to the 2011 census, the population of Muslims here is 14% including Sunni, Shia and Noor Bakshi communities.

Islamic influence in the Kashmir Valley is more, but Islam also entred in Ladakh historically. In 1382 AD, Mir Syed Ali Hamdani came to Ladakh and he first propagated Islam. It is said that he got the She Masjid constructed. Shamsuddin came to Iraqi in the 15th century and converted some people into Nurbakhshia sect. Early Muslims were actually traders from Kashmir, who came to Ladakh for business and settled here. These traders married local Ladakhi girls and gradually became part of the Muslim population.

Religious cohesion and culture
The biggest feature of Ladakh is that people of different religions live here with harmony and harmony. Buddhist festivals and Islamic traditions are celebrated simultaneously. The spirit of co -existence in the local society makes Ladakh culturally even more rich. Buddhism is deeply absorbed in the monasteries, festivals and cultural lives here. Monasteries (monasteries are called Gompa here) like Hemis, Thiksey, Alchi are not only religious places but also centers of art, education and culture. In Ladakhi society, Buddhism is considered a symbol of peace, harmony and tolerance. This is the reason that tourists coming here are affected by its spirituality and cultural diversity.

Buddhism in bihar: Bihar is called the “Karmabhoomi” of Buddhism. In Bodh Gaya, Lord Buddha attained knowledge and this was from here that his religion was started. According to historians, this area was part of the Magadha Empire at that time, which was a major center of education and culture.

Even today, the Mahabodhi Temple and Bodhi tree of Bodh Gaya are the main places of faith for Buddhist devotees around the world. Every year thousands of people reach here and experience history and spiritual peace related to Lord Buddha. This is the reason why Bihar is considered a heritage of Buddhism.

Bodh Gaya- Where Buddha got knowledge
Bodh Gaya of Bihar is considered to be the most sacred pilgrimage center of Buddhism. The Mahabodhi temple located in Gaya district, which has been declared by UNESCO World Heritage Site, still attracts bitter devotees and tourists.

It is believed that about 2,500 years ago, Prince Siddharth Gautam attained knowledge by doing deep practice and became Buddha. The Bodhi tree located in the temple premises is still the center of faith for Buddhist followers. Especially this is the reason why Bodh Gaya “Buddhist birthplace “ It is said.

Magadha Buddhism and Center of Education
The Magadha region of Bihar became the main center of Buddhism after the knowledge of Lord Buddha. Emperor Ashoka started the spread of religion from here after the Kalinga war and brought it to international level.

Nalanda and Vikramshila universities made Magadha the center of education, where students from Asia and many countries of the world used to come to study. These institutions gave a new height to Buddhist philosophy, literature and culture. Even today, their remains are considered a symbol of the glorious heritage of Bihar and the power of Buddhism.

The global journey of Buddhism started from Bihar
Buddhism from Bihar was propagated all over the world. Lord Buddha taught his first disciples here and started Dharmachakra. Posts like Rajgir, Vaishali and Pavapuri became witness to this historic journey.

In Vaishali, Buddha allowed women to enter the Sangh, which is considered a major initiative of social reform. This education arose from Bihar reached Nepal, Sri Lanka, Tibet, China, Japan and South-East Asia. Even today, these places remain a symbol of the faith and historical heritage of Buddhism.

Buddhist pilgrimage in modern era
Bihar remains a major center of Buddhist even today. Bodh Gaya, Rajgir, Vaishali and Nalanda are very important from religious and historically. Bodh Gaya is famous worldwide for International Buddhist Conference and Dhyan Camps.

Rajgir and Vaishali attract devotees to their ancient Buddhist sites. However, the legacy of Nalanda University is still the center of research and tourism. The state government is active in conservation, development and international publicity of these sites. Foreign and indigenous pilgrims are coming to Bihar and experiencing Buddhist culture.

In Western countries, Buddhism is often associated with meditation and cultivation of mind-body, but the importance of Buddhism in countries like Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Thailand is much deeper. Being Buddhist here is not just a matter of personal faith but an important symbol of national identity.

According to the 2022 Pew Research Center Survey, nine out of ten Buddhists in these countries believe that Buddhism is necessary to be a true citizen. For example, 95% of Buddhists in Sri Lanka believe that it is necessary to be a Buddhist to be true Sri Lankan. From this it is clear that Buddhism in these countries is not only religion, but a deep part of lifestyle, culture and tradition.

Confluence of religion, culture and family tradition
In Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Thailand, people do not consider Buddhism only a religion, but also see it as culture, family tradition and ethnic identity. Most of the people in these countries consider Buddhism to be the origin of their national culture. It is considered the duty of the family to adopt it from generation to generation. For example, 76% of Cambodian Buddhists believe that Buddhism is an ethnic identity, in which someone is born. Thus, this deep confluence of religion and culture strengthens national unity and identity.

Constitutional and legal recognition
Constitution and laws of countries like Cambodia, Sri Lanka and Thailand also work to show the importance of Buddhism. In the Constitution of Cambodia, Buddhism is considered a national religion and gives the state a feeling of supporting Buddhist education. The Constitution of Sri Lanka has been given the highest place to Buddhism and considers the government to be the responsibility of its protection and promotion. Under the latest constitution made in Thailand, the state has been given the responsibility to ensure that Buddhism is not weak in any form. This constitutional recognition states that Buddhism is not only a matter of faith but also an important part of governance and policy.

Role of politics and religious leaders
The survey shows that even a mixed views on the political participation of citizens religious leaders in these countries. 81% of Buddhists in Kambodia believe that religious leaders should have the right to vote. Sri Lanka and Thailand have received relatively low support, which is 66% and 54%. However, the Constitution of Thailand does not have the freedom to vote for monks, which is an example of a clear partition between religion and politics. Nevertheless, about half of Buddhists in Cambodia want religious leaders to participate in political protests or become leaders themselves.

Dalai lama reincarnation: The controversy over the rebirth of the successor of the 14th Dalai Lama has now become not only spiritual, but has become strategic. This challenge for India is also big because the Dalai Lama and the hosts of the exiled Tibetan government live here. China can create tremendous pressure on India on this issue so that no rebirth is on the land of India. According to intelligence sources, this matter has now become more political dominance than religious rights.

Dalai Lama’s rebirth and China’s objection
The 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso announced on his 90th birthday that the process of appointing his successor would be through the Gaden Fodrang Trust. He clarified that there will be no intervention of any external institution or government in this process. China dismissed this statement, saying that the rebirth process should be according to the ‘Golden Arn’ tradition of the 18th century Ching dynasty and the approval of the Chinese government.

Right to recognition of rebirth to Gaden Fodarrang Trust
The Dalai Lama said in his statement that the Dalai Lama’s organization will remain and the Gaden Fodrang Trust, which is a non-profit organization and was established in 2015, will have the right to recognize his future rebirth. He reiterated that “no other intervention in this subject.” This statement directly challenges the strategy of China in which it is trying to stop a legitimate successor in India from emerging.

China’s strategy and global impact
According to sources, China has been preparing for the appointment of a state -backed 15th Dalai Lama for the last decade to reduce the religious resistance of the Tibetan community. But with this announcement of the Dalai Lama, the validity of any Chinese -appointed heir ends in the eyes of Tibetan and the global Buddhist community. If there is rebirth in India, then two parallel Dalai Lama will exist – one in legitimate exile and the other in Lhasa, representative of China.

New twist in India-China relations
This whole matter can deepen the stressful border and political relations between India and China. Sources say that Tibetan and global Buddhist society will not accept any religious leaders imposed by China. This will affect China’s religious diplomacy, especially in areas like Mongolia, Ladakh, Sikkim and Bhutan.

China’s internal response and potential strategy
According to News18, intelligence sources said that China can intensify arrests, surveillance and ideological repression in Tibet to face this challenge.
He can also target Buddhist monasteries and educational institutions. Meanwhile, China may announce a rival Dalai Lama in a hurry to prevent the increasing global acceptance of a possible successor in India.
