US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday (11 November 2025) that his administration is very close to finalizing a Fair Trade Deal with India. He indicated that the high import tariffs imposed on India can be reduced in the coming times.

In response to questions from journalists, Trump said, “Tariffs on India are very high because of Russian oil, but now India has significantly reduced the purchase of oil from Russia.” We will reduce the tariff at the earliest appropriate time. His statement has come at a time when America had recently increased the duty on some products coming from India from 25% to 50%. The reason for this was said to be India’s ongoing oil import from Russia, whereas India has always been saying that it takes decisions based on its energy security interests.

Trump’s comment on oil trade between India and Russia
Trump claimed that India has now significantly reduced the purchase of oil from Russia. However, the Government of India had already made it clear that its policy is based on energy procurement in line with national interests. Earlier, Trump had also said that he had received assurance from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stop oil trade with Russia, but India had not confirmed any such conversation.

New chapter towards fair trade
Trump said in his statement that in the past decades, trade agreements between America and India have always been one-sided, due to which American companies suffered losses. “Now his administration is preparing an agreement that will equally balance the interests of both countries.” He said, “We are making a new agreement with India which will be completely different from before. This will prove beneficial for both the countries.”

Trade tension between Canada and America has increased once again. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has admitted that he has apologized to the US President. This apology was sought due to a controversial advertisement, in which the voice of former US President Ronald Reagan was used.

On this matter, Carney said that the President was angry and I apologized to him. When America is ready, talks will resume. The case began when Ontario Premier Doug Ford shared a political ad on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). In this advertisement, a clip of Ronald Reagan’s old radio speech was used, in which he was talking about the dangers of tariffs. Reagan’s voice said that tariffs may seem patriotic at first glance, but in the long run they harm every American worker and consumer. This advertisement aired during a cricket match on Fox Sports and was seen by more than 9 million people.

Reagan Foundation expressed strong objection

The Reagan Presidential Foundation expressed displeasure about the advertisement. The foundation said that the Canadian or Ontario governments did not obtain permission to use this clip and it was edited in a misleading manner. According to NBC News, the Foundation is now considering legal options in this matter.

Canada ran fake ad: Trump

Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social that Canada ran a fake ad in which Reagan was shown to be anti-tariff. This is a fraudulent move. He said that this behavior of Canada is an “attack on American interests” and has deeply damaged the trust between the two countries.

America’s counterattack- 10% additional tariff

As the controversy escalated, the White House announced that an additional 10% tariff would be imposed on Canadian products. This duty will be especially applicable on aluminum and agricultural products. Trump said that there will be no trade related negotiations until Canada stops its misinformation policy.

Want reconciliation, not conflict – Mark Carney

The Canadian Prime Minister said that the objective of his government is not confrontation with America but dialogue and cooperation. He said, “We want permanent relations with America. Whenever they are ready, we are ready for talks.” Carney clarified that Canada believes in fair trade and its intention is not to challenge America’s policies.

Old history of tariff dispute

The dispute between America and Canada regarding tariffs is not new. In 2018, the Trump administration had imposed heavy duties on Canadian steel and aluminium, which deteriorated relations between the two countries. This time the matter is related to a political advertisement, but it can have a direct impact on business. Experts say that if tariff policies remain harsh, there could be a long-term impact on North America’s economic relations.

Union Commerce and Trade Minister Piyush Goyal said that India is in the advanced stage of negotiations with both the European Union and America for trade agreements. He said that talks with both regarding trade are now in their final stages.

America has imposed a penalty of 25 percent on India for purchasing oil from Russia. This is in addition to the 25 percent reciprocal duty on Indian goods entering the US markets. Overall, 50 percent additional import tariff is being imposed on Indian goods in America. New Delhi has called these tariffs unfair and imprudent.

‘Negotiations completed on 10 points with EU’

Speaking at an event in The Economic Times, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that India and the European Union (EU) have completed negotiations on 10 out of 20 points of the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA), while an agreement has been reached in principle on the other 4-5 points. Trade negotiators from both sides will meet next week. Then sensitive issues including trade barriers on steel and automobiles will be resolved. His aim is to complete negotiations on a free trade agreement (FTA) by December.

EU Trade Commissioner will visit India in late November

Piyush Goyal said India hopes to achieve another breakthrough during the visit of the EU Trade Commissioner to India in late November and both sides are moving forward recognizing mutual sensitivities and strengths as they work to address shortcomings in other areas of the agreement.

This behavior by Canada leads to the immediate termination of all trade negotiations.”

On the other hand, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that after talks with Prime Minister Carney, the American advertising campaign will be stopped from Monday so that talks can resume. However, these ads will continue to air on weekends during World Series baseball games. This controversial advertisement is funded by the Ontario government and is said to cost approximately $75 million.

How much tariff did Trump impose on Canada?

Trump had imposed a 35% tariff on products coming from Canada. Apart from this, he imposed tariff of up to 50% on metal sector and 25% on automobile. In response to this move by the US, Canada also imposed strict retaliatory tariffs, although products covered under the USA-Mexico-Canada Agreement were exempted from this.
