India’s oldest party and currently the main opposition party of the country, Congress seems to be lagging badly in the results of Bihar assembly elections. In Bihar, Congress Party was contesting the elections by joining the grand alliance with many other parties including Rashtriya Janata Dal. In Bihar, Congress had fielded its candidates on 61 assembly seats, but by evening the situation is such that the party has won only one seat, Kishanganj, and is leading on four. These four assembly seats include Kishanganj, Valmiki Nagar, Araria, Chanpatia and Manihari.

Congress has lead on four assembly seats

Congress’ Mohammad Kamrul Hoda has won from Kishanganj assembly seat of Bihar. At the same time, Congress candidate Manohar Prasad Singh is leading from Manihari Assembly seat with a margin of 8,179 votes. In Araria, Congress candidate Abiur Rehman is leading by 2406 votes and from Valmikinagar candidate Surendra Prasad is leading by a margin of just 72 votes, while in Chanpatia, Congress is leading by just 800 votes. However, on 56 assembly seats, Congress’s election vehicle seems to be in the back row.

Congress party lagged behind in the by-elections along with Bihar elections.

The Congress Party has been seen lagging behind in the Bihar Assembly elections as well as in the by-elections held in many states of the country. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has also announced the results of the by-elections held on 8 assembly seats in many states of the country on Friday (November 14, 2025). However, the Congress party has won the by-elections in Anta Assembly seat of Rajasthan and Jubilee Hills Assembly seat of Telangana.

In the by-election on Anta seat of Rajasthan, Congress had nominated Pramod Jain ‘Bhaya’, who won by defeating Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Morpal Suman by 15,612 votes. At the same time, in the by-election held on Jubilee Hills Assembly seat in Telangana, Congress candidate Naveen Yadav V. has defeated Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) candidate Maganti Sunita Gopinath by 24,729 votes.

Mizoram’s main opposition party Mizo National Front (MNF) retained the Dampa assembly seat in the by-election on Friday, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the Nagrota seat in Jammu and Kashmir and was leading in the Nuapada seat in Odisha. According to the results and trends so far of the by-elections held on eight assembly seats of different states, Congress candidates are ahead in Jubilee Hills assembly seat of Telangana and Anta assembly seat of Baran district of Rajasthan.

Who has the edge in Punjab and Jharkhand?
In Punjab’s Tarn Taran assembly seat, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu is ahead of his nearest rival and Shiromani Akali Dal candidate Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, while in Jharkhand’s Ghatshila assembly seat, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) candidate Somesh Chandra Soren is ahead of his nearest rival Babulal Soren of BJP.

PDP has lead in Budgam seat of Kashmir
People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is leading in the by-election on Budgam assembly seat in Kashmir and opposition candidate Agha Syed Muntajir has a lead of more than 2,000 votes over ruling National Conference candidate Agha Syed Mahmood. After winning both Budgam and Ganderbal seats in the assembly elections last year, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had resigned from Budgam seat. Due to his resignation, there was a need for by-election for this seat.

BJP’s victory on Nagrota seat
On Nagrota seat, BJP candidate Devyani Rana defeated Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNPP) candidate Harsh Dev Singh. On reaching the counting centre, Rana thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda and other party leaders. Rana is the daughter of former MLA Devendra Singh Rana, whose death led to the by-election.

Dampa seat of Mizoram is near MNF
According to the Election Commission, the main opposition party in Mizoram, Mizo National Front (MNF), retained the Dampa assembly seat in Mamit district. Candidate R Lalthangliyana defeated Vanlalsailova of the ruling Joram People’s Movement by a margin of 562 votes. Lalthangliyana got 6,981 votes which is 40.23 percent of the total vote share. Vanlalsailova secured 6,419 votes (36.61 percent). Dampa seat had fallen vacant after the death of sitting MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Silo on July 21.

Congress ahead on Anta seat of Rajasthan
In Anta assembly seat of Baran district of Rajasthan, Congress candidate Pramod Jain Bhaya is ahead by a margin of 4,989 votes after seven rounds of counting. Independent candidate Naresh Meena Bhaya and BJP candidate Morpal Saman are lagging behind. This by-election took place due to the disqualification of BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena.

BJP’s lead in Nuapada seat of Odisha
BJP candidate Jai Dholakia is ahead by more than 40,000 votes in Nuapada seat of Odisha. After 12 rounds of counting, Dholakia got 59,366 votes, while Biju Janata Dal’s Snehangini Churiya got 19,053 votes. Congress candidate Ghasi Ram Majhi is in third place with 17,437 votes. Jai Dholakia is the son of late BJD MLA Rajendra Dholakia.

AAP’s lead in Tarn Taran seat of Punjab
In Punjab, Aam Aadmi Party candidate Harmeet Singh Sandhu is heading towards victory in the Tarn Taran assembly by-election. Sandhu got 32,520 votes while Randhawa got 22,284 votes. AAP workers celebrated outside the counting centre. Tarn Taran seat fell vacant after the death of AAP MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal in June.

Congress ahead in Jubilee Hills seat of Telangana
In Jubilee Hills assembly constituency in Telangana, Congress candidate V Naveen Yadav is ahead of BRS rival Maganti Sunita by 2,995 votes. Yadav got 17,874 votes, while the BRS candidate got 14,879 votes. This by-election occurred due to the death of BRS MLA Maganti Gopinath.

JMM’s lead in Ghatshila seat of Jharkhand
In Ghatshila Assembly seat in Jharkhand, JMM candidate Somesh Chandra Soren is ahead of his nearest rival Babulal Soren of BJP by 7,541 votes. After the third round of counting, Soren got 16,110 votes, while the BJP candidate got 8,569 votes. Somesh is the son of JMM MLA Ramdas Soren, whose death led to the by-election.

A total of 10 candidates are contesting from Nagrota assembly seat. National Conference has fielded Shamim Begum, Devyani Rana is contesting from BJP’s side and Aam Aadmi Party has made Joginder Singh its candidate.

Interesting contest on Tarn Taran seat of Punjab
Voting took place in the much-discussed Tarn Taran assembly seat of Punjab on Tuesday morning amid tight security. This seat became vacant after the death of Aam Aadmi Party MLA Kashmir Singh Sohal. A total of 15 candidates are trying their luck in this by-election. Aam Aadmi Party has given ticket to Harmeet Singh Sandhu, while Harjeet Singh Sandhu from BJP, Sukhwinder Kaur from Akali Dal and Karanbir Singh from Congress have contested the elections.

15 candidates for Anta seat of Rajasthan
A total of 15 candidates are contesting from Anta assembly seat of Baran district of Rajasthan. This seat had fallen vacant due to the disqualification of BJP MLA Kanwar Lal Meena after he was found guilty in a criminal case. Congress has given ticket to former minister Pramod Jain ‘Bhaya’, while BJP has made Morpal Suman its candidate.

Direct contest between JMM and BJP on Ghatshila seat of Jharkhand
Voters have decided the fate of 13 candidates in Ghatshila assembly seat of Jharkhand. The main contest here is believed to be between Somesh Chandra Soren of JMM and Babulal Soren of BJP. This by-election has been conducted due to the death of JMM MLA Ramdas Soren.

Contest between 5 candidates on Mizoram’s Dampa seat
Five candidates are in the fray for Mizoram’s Dampa assembly seat. The main opposition party MNF, along with its senior vice president R. Lalthangliyana has been given the ticket, while Congress has fielded John Rotluangliyana and BJP has fielded Lalmingthanga. This seat was vacant after the death of MNF MLA Lalrintluanga Sailo.

58 candidates for Jubilee Hills seat of Telangana
This time the most interesting contest is being seen on Jubilee Hills Assembly seat of Telangana, because a total of 58 candidates are in the fray here. BJP has given ticket to Deepak Reddy, Congress has fielded Naveen Yadav and BRS has fielded Maganti Sunita.

The ruling Congress in Telangana has declared V. Naveen Yadav as its candidate for the by-election to be held on November 11 in Jubilee Hills assembly constituency of Hyderabad. Congress General Secretary K.C. Venugopal issued a statement on Wednesday announcing Naveen Yadav’s candidature.

41 year old Naveen Yadav has been in many parties. He contested the 2014 Telangana Assembly elections on the ticket of Asaduddin Owaisi’s party All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and in 2018 as an independent candidate. After this, in 2023 he joined the Congress Party.

Azharuddin and Anjan Kumar angry
Before Naveen Yadav, Azharuddin was a strong candidate from this seat and Anjan Kumar Yadav was also in the race to get the ticket from here, but Naveen Yadav defeated both of them. Azharuddin and Anjan Kumar are angry over Naveen Yadav being given preference over two senior Congress leaders. Now it remains to be seen how Congress resolves the anger of these two leaders.

However, Naveen Yadav is also involved in a controversy recently. Police have registered a case against him for distributing printed e-EPIC (Electronic Electoral Photo Identity Card) without hologram during an event in Hyderabad. Why are by-elections being held in Jubilee Hills Assembly?
The need for by-election in Jubilee Hills assembly constituency arose due to the death of Bharat Rashtra Samiti (BRS) MLA Maganti Gopinath. Maganti Gopinath died of a heart attack in June 2025. The Election Commission on Monday (October 6, 2025) announced the by -election dates in seven states and union territories including Jammu and Kashmir. Voting in all seats will be held on 11 November 2025 on the same day, while counting of votes and results will be announced on 14 November.

• The 71-Nuapada seat of Odisha is vacant after the death of Rajendra Dholakia.

Nomination and withdrawal process
The Election Commission has also set a detailed program for the process of nomination and withdrawal. The Gazette notification for all seats will be released on 13 October. The last date for filing nominations for the seats of Jammu and Kashmir and Odisha will be October 20. The last date for nomination for the seats of Jharkhand, Mizoram, Punjab and Telangana has been fixed on October 21 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature in these states will be 24 October. The last date for nomination for Anta seat of Rajasthan has been kept on 21 October, while the candidates will be able to withdraw the name by October 27.

Mcd bypolls dates: By -elections are going to be held in 12 wards of Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD). The State Election Commission may announce this soon. Official sources have given this information on Friday (May 2). Recently, the Commission has issued a notification. In this, Electoral Registration Officer has been appointed for 12 wards. It is indicating that preparations for the by -election have been completed.

Causes of vacant seats
Sources said that the dates of these by -elections will be announced keeping in mind the current law and order and political circumstances. According to PTI, these 12 wards were vacant due to this because BJP councilor Kamaljeet Sehrawat was elected Lok Sabha MP in the 2024 general elections, while the other 11 councilors became MLAs in the assembly elections held in February.

Of the councilors who won the assembly elections, 3 were from Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and 8 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP’s Rekha Gupta, who was a councilor from Shalimar Bagh B Ward, has now become the Chief Minister of Delhi after becoming an MLA.

Commission notification
In the notification issued on April 28, the Delhi State Election Commission said, “Under the rights received under Section 7B of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi Act, 1957, I, Vijay Dev, State Election Commissioner of National Capital Region Delhi, I consult the Delhi Government and appoint Electoral Registration Officer for 12 wards.”

By -election ward
The wards where the by -elections are to be held include Mundka, Shalimar Bagh B, Chandni Chowk, Dwarka B, Narayana, Sangam Vihar A and other wards.

Significantly, in the municipal elections held in December 2022, the Aam Aadmi Party won 134 wards and gained power in the Municipal Corporation and ended the 15 -year domination of BJP.
