He told that Deepali is originally a resident of Dippur village under Dhirai police station of Sylhet district of Bangladesh. She married Abhimanyu Das of Parai village of Baniachong police station of Habiganj district in 1987. A year later, in 1988, the woman came to India with her husband. Settled in Cachar district. Have been living there since then.

Police started investigation in the year 2013

Dev told that in the year 2013, the police started investigation against him. After this, questions started being raised on his citizenship. On July 2, 2013, the police filed the charge sheet. It was told that Deepali is a resident of Baniachong, Bangladesh. She had entered India illegally after 1971.

Later the charge sheet proved important in the application for Indian citizenship under CAA. The applicant has to present documentary proof of coming to India from Bangladesh, Pakistan, or Afghanistan. In most of the cases applicants fail to submit such documents. The officials have accepted Deepali’s document as valid evidence.

After being released in 2021, Deepali wanted to apply for citizenship under CAA. He had approached Deb for legal assistance after the rules of the Act were notified in 2024.
