Cambodia has announced to nominate US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. Cambodia Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol gave this information on Friday (August 1, 2025) during a press conference. Cambodia’s decision has recently surfaced after the direct intervention of US President Donald Trump in preventing the recent border struggle with South East Asian country Thailand.

According to the Reuters report, when Cambodia Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol was asked through text messages whether Cambodia is planning to nominate President Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, he said yes to this.

Speaking to reporters at Faneom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, Deputy Prime Minister Chanthol thanked Donald Trump for establishing peace in the midst of struggle and said that he is eligible to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The award is the highest international honor given to an individual or organization for the work done to increase cooperation and harmony between countries.

Pakistan and Israel recommended Nobel Prize for Trump

At the same time, Pakistan’s neighboring country Pakistan also recommended to give the Nobel Prize to President Trump. Pakistan had said in June this year that it would recommend the Nobel Peace Prize for President Trump to resolve the struggle with India. Apart from this, Israel’s name is also included in this list. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said last month that he nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

The ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand last week

According to the Reuters report, there was tension between Thailand and Cambodia in more than a decade. Recently this tension turned into an open war. At the same time, Trump’s phone call came last week, after which a ceasefire was announced in Malaysia on Monday (July 28, 2025).

After the announcement of a ceasefire between the two South East Asian countries, the White House spokesman Caroline Lewit said in a post on the social media platform X, “This was Trump’s initiative that made it possible. Give them the Nobel Peace Prize!”

The decades -old border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia once again took a bloody turn on Thursday (24 July 2025). The situation became explosive by a sudden rocket attack on a gas station in Sisket Province. After this attack, a strong firing between the two sides started, in which at least 12 civilians were killed and dozens were injured.

This conflict was not only limited military action, but it was an indication that two major neighbors of Southeast Asia are once again standing at the mouth of military conflict.
