Investigation revealed that this infection is related to Hanta virus, a special type of virus spread by rats. Hyderabad’s senior doctor K. C. Mishra told TOI that the biggest misconception among people is that this disease spreads rapidly from one person to another like normal fever. Whereas in most of the cases this does not happen. He says that the real danger comes from the infected environment, not from sitting near an infected person. According to Bengaluru-based infectious disease expert Subramaniam Swaminathan, many people believe that this disease is limited only to forests or remote areas, whereas the truth is that where rats are present, there can be danger. Be it the store room of the house, an old warehouse or a room that has been closed for a long time.

What are the symptoms of this disease?

This disease starts with very common symptoms, problems like high fever, body ache, weakness and fatigue initially seem like a simple viral infection. This is why many people do not take it seriously. But in some cases, serious conditions like sudden difficulty in breathing, filling of lungs with water and effect on vital organs of the body can arise. Experts say that no definite treatment or vaccine is currently available for this infection. Therefore, reaching the hospital on time and getting proper care is considered most important. By getting early treatment, the patient’s chances of survival increase significantly.
