Cancer Cases Are Rising In Delhi: More than 15.33 lakh new cases of cancer were reported in India in 2024. This number was 14.96 lakh in 2023 and 14.61 lakh in 2022. That means the cases are continuously increasing every year. The situation is no different in Delhi too, 28,387 patients were found in the year 2024, while 27,561 cases were registered in 2023 and 26,735 cases in 2022. Such a sharp increase shows the increasing pressure on hospitals and oncology services in the capital, while the government claims to increase screening and treatment facilities.

Delhi among the most affected states

The latest figures of ICMR National Cancer Registry Program show that Uttar Pradesh is at number one in the entire country with the highest number of 2.21 lakh cases. After this comes Maharashtra (1.27 lakh), West Bengal (1.18 lakh), Bihar (1.15 lakh) and Tamil Nadu (98,386). The total number of cases in Delhi may be less, but if seen in comparison to the population, it is among the most affected states.

Oncologists say that lifestyle, pollution and late diagnosis are the three main reasons for the rapid increase in cancer in Delhi. Dr. Pramod Jain, Senior Consultant, Fortis Hospital, New Delhi, says that now more patients are arriving “at a younger age and in a late stage of the disease”. According to him, Delhi’s toxic air, stress, poor diet and low screening are together creating a “perfect storm” for cancer.

Cancer cases are increasing due to these things

Dr. Amrita Gupta, Medical Oncologist, Sanjeevani Hospital, Noida, says that long working hours, less physical activity, increasing use of processed food and increasing consumption of tobacco alcohol are further increasing the risk. On top of that, Delhi’s air further increases the risk of lung cancer. She believes that due to ignoring the initial symptoms and going to the doctor late, most of the patients present themselves in the late stage. He said that “small lifestyle changes and timely screening can make a big difference.”

What does the government say?

Responding in Parliament on the increasing cancer burden, Minister of State for Health Prataprao Jadhav said that the government is increasing the facilities for prevention, screening and treatment under the NP-NCD programme. Currently, 770 district NCD clinics, 6,410 CHC clinics and 364 district day-care chemotherapy centers are running across the country. Apart from this, the Center has established oncology units in 19 State Cancer Institutes, 20 Tertiary Cancer Centers and the new AIIMS. He said that so that the treatment does not become expensive, many cancer medicines are being made available at 50 to 80 percent lower prices in Jan Aushadhi Centers and AMRIT Pharmacy. Custom duty and GST on many medicines have also been reduced.

Cancer is one of the most danger diseases in the world today. It gradually grows into the body and often does not understand a clear problem on the starting stage. This is the reason that most people do not reach the doctor until the disease reaches the serious stage. But if the test is done at the right time, then the cancer can be controlled in the starting stage itself. The question is, from which age can the risk of cancer starts increasing and when is it necessary to conduct a test?

Which age increases risk?

According to doctors, the risk of cancer increases with the age.

Up to 30 years: Cancer occurs only in rare case. But if there is a family history, then the risk is more.

After 40 years: At this age, the risk of breast cancer, cervical cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer starts increasing.

Over 50 years: Most cases are reported in this age group. There are more chances of lung, liver, colon and blood cancer.

Why is the test necessary on time?

The biggest problem of cancer is that it gradually spreads in the body and does not get caught till late stage.

If diagnosed on the early stage, then the treatment becomes successful in 70–80 percent of the case.

On detecting late, the treatment becomes both tuff and costally.

Regular screening causes the disease to be caught and life can be saved.

Which tests should be conducted?

Breast cancer: Women should do mammography every 1–2 years after the age of 40.

Cervical cancer: Women above 30 mother -in -law should conduct a pap smear test every 3 years.

Colon Cancer: After 45, both main and women are required to colonoscopy.

Prostate Cancer: Main should have a PSA blood test after 50.

Lung Cancer: Smoking should be scanned after 40–45.

Easy Tips for Rescue

Stay away from smoking and alcohol.

Take healthy diet – Include green vegetables, fruits and holes.

Do daily exercise and yoga.

Keep the weight control and take a proper sleep.

Do regular health checkups every year.

What do doctors say?

Dr. Naveen Kumar, an oncologist of AIIMS Jhajjar, says that cancer can be in any age, but after 40, the risk increases. For this reason, every person should continue to conduct the necessary screening tests after 40–45. This Danger disease from early detect and healthy lifestyle is possible. If the problem is caught at the right time, then the treatment is easy and less expensive.
