Scientists at America’s University of Massachusetts Amherst have created such a ‘super vaccine’, which completely stopped cancer in tests conducted on rats in the lab. This vaccine activates the body’s immune system in such a way that it identifies and destroys abnormal cells, so that cancer does not start. The rats that were given this vaccine in the test remained healthy for months. At the same time, rats without vaccine got cancer. Scientists say that this discovery may open a way to prevent cancer before it starts in the future.

How does this vaccine fight cancer?

This vaccine teaches the body’s natural immune system to detect and destroy cells that can become cancerous. This will prevent cancer from spreading in the body and the risk of disease will also reduce.

On which cancers will the vaccine work?

According to the information, this vaccine will not only eliminate one type of cancer, but will also protect against many dangerous cancers like melanoma, pancreatic cancer and breast cancer. Tumors did not form in the vaccinated rats in the test. This proved that the body can be taught to fight cancer. The most important thing is that this vaccine also prevents cancer from spreading to other parts of the body. In fact, most deaths from cancer occur due to metastasis. This condition occurs when cancer reaches organs like lungs or liver. If similar effect is seen in humans also then millions of lives can be saved.

What is special in this vaccine?

This vaccine is different from the common vaccine, which protects against viruses or bacteria. It works against cancer, which starts in the body’s own cells. There is a special thing in it, which scientists call ‘super adjuvant’. It activates the body’s immune system more quickly, so that cancer cells can be found and destroyed quickly.

When will the vaccine come in the market?

Experts say that this research is still in the initial stages. This test has been done only on rats and several more years of testing will be required before it can be used in humans. If this vaccine is effective in trials on humans, then it can change the method of cancer prevention. With its help, cancer can be prevented before it starts. It can be beneficial for those who have a history of cancer in their family or who are genetically at higher risk of cancer.

In today’s time, cancer has become the biggest deadly disease. But the good thing is that if it is detected in the early stages, then its treatment can be easy and effective, yet only about 29 percent of the people in India get tested on time, that is, in most of the cases the disease is detected when it has progressed. Experts say that with regular screening, cancer can be eradicated and lives can be saved. So let us know why cancer screening is important and which tests should be done when.

Why is cancer screening important?

The biggest danger of cancer is that it does not show symptoms initially, by the time the effects of the disease start appearing, it has often spread inside the body. If cancer is detected in the first stage, then the treatment is easier, costs less and the chances of recovery are higher. This is the reason why doctors repeatedly say to get checked on time.

What is the situation in India?

Every year about 14 lakh new cancer cases are reported in India. Most of these are detected late. Overall, only 29 percent of cancers are detected in the early stages. In which only 15 percent of breast cancer cases are detected on time. Cervix cancer is diagnosed early in only about 33 percent cases. There itself
Oral and colorectal cancer are caught early in less than 20 percent of cases. These figures show that India is in great need of awareness and regular testing.

Which tests should be done when?

According to the government and health experts, every person should get some important cancer tests done after a certain age.

1. Mouth cancer – All adults above 30 years of age, especially men who consume tobacco or alcohol, should undergo oral examination (VIA/VILI) once a year. In this, the doctor examines the inside of the mouth with acetic acid or Lugol’s iodine.

2. Cervix Cancer – Women ages 21-29 should have a Pap test every three years. Women ages 30-65 should have a Pap test, HPV test, or just the Pap test every three years.

3. Breast Cancer – Women above 30 years of age should undergo clinical breast examination every year. After 40 years, it is necessary to get mammography or ultrasound done every 1-2 years. If someone in the family has had breast cancer, then testing should be started early.

4. Colorectal Cancer – People above 45 years of age are advised to get a colonoscopy or stool-based test done every 5–10 years.

5. Lung Cancer – Heavy smokers aged 55-80 are advised to undergo a low-dose CT scan once a year. This investigation is not necessary for common people.

6. Prostate Cancer – Men above 50 years of age are advised to undergo PSA blood test and digital rectal examination. If someone in the family has had this cancer, then investigation should be started in advance.

Breast Cancer: Generally, hormonal changes, weight fluctuations or periods are held responsible for the change in breast shape in women, but if this change happens suddenly and without any apparent reason, then it should not be ignored. Experts say that sometimes this can be a symptom of the beginning of breast cancer. Let us tell you about it in detail, what causes it and what are its symptoms.

Why the change in shape?

Now let us come to why the shape of the breast changes. Breast tissue is made up of hormones, fat and muscles. The shape of the breast may change slightly due to hormonal fluctuations during periods or pregnancy. But if you notice a change in one side of the breast, or notice any lump, swelling or stretch in the skin, then it can be a cause for concern. But the question arises whether it can cause cancer. According to Mayo Clinic, changes in the size, shape or appearance of the breast can be symptoms of breast cancer.

Apart from this, the World Health Organization has stated in its report that change in the size, shape or look of the breast can be a possible symptom of breast cancer. Another medical organization, Agendia, has also said that among the early signs of breast cancer, uneven shape or size is an important sign, which can be caused by a tumor.

What changes not to ignore

sudden increase or decrease in the size of one breast

Appearance of dimples or wrinkles on the skin of the breast

The nipple turning inwards or changing its shape

Breast irritation, pain, or persistent swelling

Unexplained discharge or bleeding from the nipple

All these changes can sometimes be due to infection, cyst or hormonal imbalance, but if they persist for a few weeks, then it is very important to get a checkup done by a doctor.

Ways to prevent breast cancer

Women should get mammography done every year after the age of 40.

If someone in the family has had breast cancer, then testing should be started only after the age of 30.

Check yourself every month. If you notice any change in lump, size or shape, consult a doctor immediately.

Apart from this, you can also avoid this problem by making changes in lifestyle. Green vegetables, fruits, whole grains and fiber-rich foods reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Cancer is such a disease that people get scared on hearing its name. This disease is often detected when it has spread widely in the body. But if it is detected in time, treatment becomes easier and the chances of recovery also increase manifold. Therefore, doctors now give more emphasis not only on treatment but also on prevention and early detection. Health experts say that especially men and women above 35 years of age should get their health checked regularly so that any serious disease, especially cancer, can be detected in the early stages. There are four screening tests that can detect cancer in its early stages. When symptoms are negligible or not visible at all. In such a situation, let us know which 4 screening tests must be done after the age of 35 years.

1. Regular Cancer Screening Test – Regular checkups i.e. standard screening tests are considered the backbone of cancer prevention. These tests have been decided after many years of study and are recognized by experts all over the world. The first one is colonoscopy. Every person should get this test done after the age of 45 years. This test helps in detecting cancer of the large intestine. It detects not only cancer but also the initial growth before it becomes cancer. Generally it is advised to repeat it every 10 years. The second test is mammogram. Women above 40 years of age should get a mammogram done once every 1 to 2 years. This is an imaging test that can detect breast cancer at an early stage. Apart from this, the third one is Pap smear or HPV test. Women above 21 years of age should get this test done for cervical cancer. Pap smear shows whether any abnormal changes are taking place in the cells of the uterus. Along with this, PSA test comes in the standard screening test. This test can give early indications of prostate cancer.

2. Gallery Test — Today’s modern technology has made cancer screening even easier. The Gallery test is a blood test that can detect more than 50 types of cancer early in a single sample. It detects the presence of cancer by detecting changes in DNA in the blood, often before symptoms are visible. Although this test does not make a complete difference in itself, but if any indication is found then the doctor can get further investigation done. People who have a history of cancer in their family or who are above 35-40 years of age can get this test done every year.

3. Genetic Test – Many times cancer occurs not only due to lifestyle but also due to genetic reasons, that is, if someone in the family has cancer at a young age, then the risk of it may increase in other members too. In such a situation, genetic testing proves to be very useful. This test identifies gene mutations such as BRCA1, BRCA2, CHEK2 or Lynch Syndrome, which can make a person susceptible to cancer. If changes in these genes are found, doctors can do early monitoring, do timely scanning and make prevention.

4. Whole body MRI – Full body MRI is a modern scan which gives an opportunity to look inside the body without radiation. It can detect hidden abnormalities or early tumors in many organs, even when symptoms are not visible. If it is done in combination with gallery test or genetic testing, it proves to be even more effective. However, doctors say that not every small abnormality is a matter of concern, so it is important to look at the MRI results with wisdom and expert advice.

Global cancer deaths: A shocking revelation has been revealed in a recent study. According to this report published in The Lancet Journal, in the coming 25 years, the number of deaths due to cancer by 2050 can increase by about 75 percent to 1.86 crore (18.6 million). Let us tell you in detail about the entire report.

Cancer cases will also increase rapidly

The report estimated that by 2050, the number of new cancer patients will increase by 61 percent to 3.05 crore (30.5 million). Currently, about 1.85 crore (18.5 million) new cancer cases are reported every year. That is, in the next 25 years, the number of patients will almost double.

Changes from 1990 to now

The number of cancer deaths in 1990 was quite low.

By 2023, the deaths from cancer increased by 74 percent and the number reached 1.04 crore (10.4 million).

During the same period, the number of new patients also doubled to 1.85 crores.

Different pictures in India and China

The study also revealed that from 1990 to 2023, cancer cases in India increased by 26.4 percent. It is one of the world’s highest rising rates. On the contrary, the rate of cancer cases in China decreased by 18.5 percent.

What is the reason?

According to the expert, there are two major reasons behind the rapid spread of cancer-

Economic growth and changing lifestyle – such as unhealthy catering, smoking, alcohol, obesity and lack of physical activities.

Increase in elderly population – With aging, the risk of cancer is also high.

Causes that can be stopped

The report said that more than 40 percent of the deaths due to cancer worldwide are related to 44 types of risk factors. Prominent among them are-

Tobacco

Unhealthy food

More sugar and high blood sugar

Obesity and lack of exercise

Prevention of cancer is possible by paying attention to these reasons and improving lifestyle.

Lack of policies and health services

The lead writer of the study, Dr. Lisa Force, says that policies and schemes for cancer control are still not getting priority in the global health agenda. Many countries do not have enough funding, due to which timely investigation and better treatment is not available. He also said that if all countries get equal and quality health services, then the deaths of cancer can be reduced to a great extent.

The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study, which analyzed data from 204 countries and regions, clarify that the cancer conditions will become more serious by 2050 if steps are not taken yet. The report states that there will be 3.05 crore new cases and 1.86 crore deaths every year in 2050, which will increase by 60.7 percent and 74.5 percent respectively as compared to 2024. That is, in the coming times, cancer is going to be a big health challenge for the whole world. If there is no arrangement for changes in lifestyle, awareness and better health services, then its disastrous results can be seen.

Pediatric Cancer: Techniques like medical imaging i.e. CT scan, X-ray are the most important means for doctors to identify disease and decide treatment. Many times the patient’s life can be saved by timely investigation. But the new research has also highlighted its threat to children. Scientists at US UC San Francisco and UC Davis University have found that radiation emanating from medical imaging can be a major cause of blood cancer in children. This study has been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Record check of 40 lakh children

Researchers studied medical records of about 40 million children and teenagers from the US and Canada. The results were shocking. The study revealed that about 10 percent of the total blood cancer found in children can be related to radiation from medical imaging. That is, about 3,000 cases came up only because of this.

Why cancer more dangerous in children?

Blood cancer, which includes leukemia and lymphoma, are most found in children. Experts say that children’s body is in the era of development, so their cells are more sensitive to radiation. Also, there is a long life in front of them, which increases the risk of getting cancer.

What threat from which investigation?

CT Scan: It has the highest amount of radiation. Research found that only one or two head CT scans are almost doubled the risk of blood cancer.

More scans: In the children who made CT scans several times, this danger increased by three times.

X-rays: The X-ray used in the chest or bone fracture test gives comparatively low radiation, so the risk of cancer is also very low.

Study data

A total of 2,961 children found blood and bone marrow cancer.

About 79 percent of these were lymphoid cancer, while 15 percent were acute leukemia and meloid cancer.

More than half of cases were found in children younger than 5 years.

The percentage of cancer in boys was 58 percent.

How to rescue possible?

Researchers said that if doctors and hospitals avoid unnecessary scans and where necessary, at least 10 percent of cases of cancer can be stopped in children. Apart from this, tests like ultrasound and MRI are more secure options because they do not contain ionizing radiation.

Expert opinion

Dr. Rebecca Smith-Bindman, the chief writer of the study, says, “Children are extremely sensitive to radiation-borne cancer. So we should think before every investigation whether it is really necessary.”

At the same time, co-writer Dr. Diana Miglioretti says that “this research clearly shows that the more radiation is available, the more the risk of cancer will increase. So doctors will have to take a decision with responsibility.” Medical imaging is important in treating children and saving lives, but excessive use can cause serious threats. If precautions are taken on time and safe options are adopted, then thousands of children can be protected from cancer in future.

Hpv vaccine: This month, Pakistan included Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine in its National Immunization Scheme. After this, rumors spread rapidly on social media, which claimed that girls are falling ill and this vaccine can cause infertility. However, health officers and international agencies are calling it completely wrong. He says that the common side effects of the vaccine are mild and temporary, such as arm pain, mild fever or fatigue. No scientific evidence proves that the HPV vaccine causes infertility.

Pakistan Health Minister Mustafa Kamal said, “Pakistan is the 151st country in the world where this vaccine is being given. Earlier this vaccine has been used in 150 countries, including almost all Muslim countries.” Pakistan introduced the HPV vaccine in September, including the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF and Gavi Vaccine Alliance support. The first phase of this vaccination targets girls between 9 and 14 years of age, and there are plans to increase coverage in the coming years.

What is the situation in Pakistan?

Two main strategies of protest are seen in Pakistan: Whataboutism and Cherry-Picking. In Whataboutism, people cite other diseases rather than the benefits of the vaccine, such as “Polio vaccine was not controversial?” Or “breast cancer is more common.” In Cherry-Picking, only a few incidents are picked up and campaigned against the vaccine, while the evidence of its being safe on millions of people is ignored.

According to a report, 3,000 women die every year in Pakistan. Questions are also being raised on social media whether it is necessary to stop so many deaths, while more people die from other diseases. Its treatment is expensive and difficult in countries like Pakistan, and women come for late treatment due to social stigma.

What is the attitude in India?

The stance on HPV vaccine in India is positive. Many states have introduced it for girls in schools and government health centers. Government of India and partner organizations have taken steps to ensure awareness campaign and safe rollout. HPV vaccine is not just a vaccine; This is an opportunity to protect girls and women. In both Pakistan and India, it shows that only supply is not enough, trust and awareness are also necessary. It is very important to give right information to parents, explain rumors and show evidence of security.
