MasterChef Winner Pankaj Bhadouria Breast Cancer: MasterChef India Season 1 winner and famous celebrity chef Pankaj Bhadauria recently shared an emotional post on social media saying that she has been diagnosed with breast cancer. After this post surfaced, concern has increased among his fans. Pankaj Bhadauria has also appealed to the people to do sports for their health.

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers found in women worldwide. Every year lakhs of women fall prey to this disease, although this disease can occur at any age, but after the age of 50, its risk increases significantly. According to doctors, hormonal and biological changes occurring in the body with increasing age are the major reasons for this. In such a situation, let us know what breast cancer is, why the risk of it increases in women after 50 years and what are its initial symptoms.

What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease in which some breast cells start growing abnormally. Over time these cells can form a lump or tumor. If it is not treated in time, cancer cells can spread to other parts of the body as well. This is why doctors consider early detection and timely treatment to be extremely important.

Why does the risk increase in women after 50?

1. According to experts, the risk of breast cancer also increases with increasing age. Especially after the age of 50, many changes occur in the body of women which can increase the risk of cancer.

2. Periods stop in women after a certain age, which is called menopause. During this time the balance of hormones in the body starts changing. Differences in hormones can affect breast tissue and increase the risk of developing abnormal cells. This is the reason why more cases of breast cancer are seen after menopause.

3. The cells of our body keep working continuously. With increasing age, small problems start accumulating in the DNA. Under normal circumstances, the body repairs them, but with increasing age this ability starts weakening. This increases the risk of bad cells growing rapidly and turning into cancer.

4. The problem of weight gain becomes common in women after 50 years. According to experts, excess fat in the body can increase the level of estrogen hormone. When there is excess fat in the body, a state of inflammation also persists, which can prepare for the growth of cancer cells.

Also read – Ebola Virus: New strain of Ebola declared global emergency, how much should India be afraid of this?

Which women need to be more careful?

The risk of breast cancer may be higher than normal in some women. For example, someone in the family has had breast cancer, problem of overweight or obesity, lack of physical activity, late menopause, unhealthy eating and lifestyle, smoking and alcohol consumption. In these situations, it becomes necessary to get regular checkups done and pay special attention to health.

What are the early symptoms of breast cancer?

There is often no pain in the initial stages of breast cancer, so many women ignore its signs. However, there are some symptoms which should not be taken lightly at all. Such as lump in the breast or armpit, change in the shape of the breast, change in the skin, change in the nipple, abnormal discharge from the nipple. Doctors say that the earlier breast cancer is detected, the easier and more successful its treatment is. In the initial stages, cancer is usually limited to the breast. In such a situation, prevention can be done through surgery, medicines and other treatments.

Daily Habits That Increase Cancer Risk: For a long time, it was believed that cancer occurs only due to increasing age, bad luck or genetic reasons. But now new research is changing this thinking. According to a study published in the journal Nature Medicine, about 40 percent of cancer cases and almost half of cancer deaths are associated with risks that can be largely avoided by adopting the right lifestyle.

Which of our habits are making us sick?

According to experts, the problem is that many habits that increase the risk of cancer have become a part of our everyday life. Staying awake till late night, sitting at one place for hours, eating processed food from outside, ignoring stress and lack of physical activity gradually affects the body. Their harm is not visible in the beginning, but over the years these habits can become the cause of serious diseases. The World Health Organization report states that tobacco, obesity, alcohol consumption, unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity and air pollution are among the biggest preventable causes of cancer. In India too, there is a continuous increase in the cases of lifestyle related cancer.

Why are young people falling prey to this?

Dr Anindya Mukherjee told TOI that cancer is no longer just a disease of the elderly. Even in young people, such cancers are increasingly appearing which were earlier seen more after the age of 50 years. He says that reasons like smoking, alcohol, obesity, poor diet, lack of exercise, pollution and constant stress have increased the risk of cancer in people of all ages.

Which cancer is associated with excess fat?

According to research by America’s National Cancer Institute, excess fat in the body is linked to many types of cancer. These include breast, colorectal, uterus, kidney, liver and pancreas cancer. Experts say that when the body faces a bad lifestyle for a long time, internal swelling starts increasing. This inflammation damages healthy cells and can create an environment conducive to cancer.

Read this also-Heart Health: Morning headache-fatigue is a silent killer alert, do not ignore it otherwise you will become a victim of a dangerous disease.

Danger from tobacco and passive smoking

According to Dr. Mukherjee, tobacco is still the biggest preventable cause of cancer. Its effect is not only on the lungs but also on the mouth, throat, stomach, kidney, bladder and many other organs. Passive smoking is equally dangerous. Apart from this, air pollution is becoming a rapidly emerging threat, especially for people living in cities.

How can you protect yourself?

According to Dr. Mukherjee, to prevent cancer, it is very important to maintain a healthy weight, do regular exercise, eat fresh fruits and vegetables, stay away from tobacco, limit alcohol consumption, control stress and get adequate sleep.

Air Pollution: In today’s time, increasing air pollution has become a big problem. Vehicle smoke, gases emitted from factories and dust together spoil the air. When we breathe such air, it slowly reaches inside our body and starts causing harm. In the beginning it seems like a minor problem, but in the long run its effect can prove to be very serious. Besides, polluted air is even more dangerous for children, elderly and sick people. This is the reason why doctors repeatedly recommend staying in clean air.

Respiratory and lung diseases caused by pollution

AQI (Air Quality Index) is used to measure the level of air pollution. If this index in the air is between 0-50 then it is considered normal but if this index goes above 200 then it shows that the level of pollution in the air is increasing. In such a situation, the first impact of pollution falls on our lungs. This can cause problems like cough, difficulty in breathing, allergy and asthma. Also, staying in bad air for a long time reduces the strength of the lungs and the person may feel tired all the time. This problem increases more rapidly in children because their body is not yet fully developed. Sometimes pollution can cause serious infection in the lungs, which can later lead to a major disease. Therefore it becomes very important to breathe clean air.

Also read: Bad Cholesterol: The hassle of medicines will end, one time treatment of bad cholesterol will be done only through gene therapy.

Increased risk of heart attack, stroke and cancer

According to the report, air pollution can become a major cause of not only respiratory diseases but also heart diseases. Small particles present in polluted air can enter the body and damage the blood veins. Besides, this also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. Apart from this, exposure to pollution for a long time can also lead to the risk of serious diseases like cancer. It affects the body slowly, that is why people do not take it seriously in the beginning. But over time it can prove to be very dangerous.

How to protect yourself from pollution and why caution is necessary

To avoid pollution, we should adopt some small precautions. Wearing a mask while going out, visiting places with less pollution in the morning or evening and planting plants at home can help. Children and the elderly should especially be protected from dust and smoke. Also, opening windows and using air purifiers can also be beneficial for clean air in the house.

Pesticides Exposure Cancer Risk : In our daily life, many types of chemicals can be present in the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. One of these important chemical groups is pesticides, which are used in agriculture to protect crops from insects and diseases.

Recently a new international research has increased the concern. According to this study, the risk of developing certain types of cancer can increase by 150 percent in people living in areas where pesticides are used heavily. This report is being considered a serious warning regarding environmental health and the effects of chemicals.

What does the new study say?

This research has been published in the journal Nature Health. It has been told that people are exposed to not just one but many pesticides simultaneously. Earlier studies were done by looking at each chemical separately, but in real life we live under mixture exposure i.e. the combined effect of many chemicals. This study has analyzed this situation keeping this situation in mind, which makes it more important than earlier research. The South American country Peru was chosen for this study.

Why was Peru chosen?

Agriculture is done on a large scale in the South American country Peru. Different types of environmental zones exist. Social and economic inequalities are high. Therefore, Peru was chosen for this study. In such a situation, research here found that rural and tribal communities are most affected. Many people were found to be affected by about 12 different pesticides simultaneously. This level was very high in many places.

How was the analysis done in the research?

Scientists studied 31 commonly used pesticides. Tracked their spread from 2014 to 2019 and compared them with health data of more than 1.5 lakh cancer patients from 2007 to 2020, the research found that areas with higher levels of pesticides also had more cancer cases. The special thing is that the pesticides that were studied have not yet been considered carcinogenic under WHO. Despite this, their combined effect was seen to have serious effects on health.

Also read –Pregnancy Care in Summer: Pregnant women may face many problems in the increasing heat, take care of yourself like this

What is the effect on the body?

According to research, pesticides affect the body gradually. These interfere with the normal functioning of cells. Can weaken the body’s immunity in the long run. The liver is most affected by this. These changes are not visible immediately, but over time can cause serious diseases. In today’s time, safety testing of chemicals usually tests each chemical separately and sets safe limits for it, but the problem is that in real life people are exposed to many chemicals simultaneously.

What else was told in the research?

Research also suggests that climate changes such as El Niño may affect the use and spread of pesticides. This may further increase the amount of these chemicals in the environment. Although this study is based on Peru, its findings can be applied worldwide because in many countries where agriculture is carried out on a large scale, the use of pesticides is common. Rules and monitoring are not the same everywhere. Therefore it can become a global health concern.

Can Daily Aspirin Prevent Cancer Risk: Can a simple pain pill reduce cancer risk? This question may sound a bit strange, but recent research is indicating that aspirin is not limited to just relieving pain. In some cases it can also play a role in reducing the risk of cancer. Let us tell you what came out of the research.

What came out in the research

The most important research in this direction was done under the leadership of John Burns, who conducted a large clinical trial on patients with Lynch syndrome. This is a genetic condition in which people have a high risk of developing colorectal cancer. In this study, it was found that in people who continued taking aspirin daily, the risk of cancer was reduced by almost half. In this trial that lasted for about 10 years, a dose of 600 mg aspirin was given and the results were so strong that even health guidelines were changed in many countries. After this, a study was also conducted on lower dose i.e. 75 to 100 mg, in which initial indications were found that lower dose can also be equally effective.

Trial conducted on patients

Similarly, another large randomized controlled trial was conducted on 2,980 patients under the leadership of Anna Martling at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. It was found that in people who took aspirin daily after surgery, the risk of cancer recurring was reduced by more than half. This study was published in 2025 and after this, changes were also seen in the medical practice there.

Read this also- Painkiller Side Effects: Do painkillers really damage organs? Know in what quantity is it appropriate to consume them?

How does aspirin work?

Now the question arises that how does aspirin do this? According to BBC report, according to oncology expert Ruth Langley of University College London, this drug affects the processes in the body which are related to the spread of cancer cells. At the same time, research from Cambridge University shows that aspirin can expose cancer cells to the immune system by reducing the elements associated with blood clotting, so that the body can recognize and destroy them.

What should you pay attention to

However, it is important to understand that aspirin is not a magical cure. It can also have side effects, such as stomach irritation, ulcers or internal bleeding, so taking it without doctor’s advice can be dangerous. Research does show that aspirin can help reduce the risk of cancer, but it does not have the same effect for every person. Therefore, the safest way is to take expert advice before adopting it.

Does Wearing A Bra At Night Cause Breast Cancer: All kinds of claims are made on social media. One of these claims was made by fitness coach and influencer Priyank Mehta in his video that sleeping wearing a bra at night can increase the risk of breast cancer. In the video, he advises women to avoid wearing bra at night, so that they can stay away from any possible risk. Let us tell you why such claims are made and how much truth is there in it.

What did the influencer claim?

In this video, he explains through a conversation that at night the body works to expel the toxic elements accumulated inside it. According to him, the lymph nodes present around the armpits, breasts and chest clean the body. He says that if a woman sleeps wearing a bra that is too tight or wired, this process can be halted, which can lead to swelling, fluid accumulation and over time, affect the breast tissue.

What does medical science say?

Although this claim sounds serious, medical science does not accept it as true. This kind of thing came to light for the first time in the year 1995, when Sydney Ross Singer and Soma Griesmeijer talked about the connection between bras and breast cancer in their book Dressed to Kill. Later, its second part also came in 2017, but experts rejected it.

American Cancer Society report

According to the American Cancer Society, there is no scientific or medical evidence to prove that wearing a bra prevents lymph flow or causes cancer. Similarly, the US National Institutes of Health also clearly states that wearing a bra, using anti-sweat products or breast implants, none of these have any connection with the risk of breast cancer.

Read this also – Hot Water Benefits: To lose weight, you also drink hot water in the morning, does this hack really work?

Britain’s cancer research also claims

Britain’s Cancer Research Organization also says that not much research has been done on this topic because there is no scientific basis that shows the relationship between bras and cancer. No such link has emerged in the available studies either.

In a large study conducted on more than 1500 women in 2014, it was also found that the habit of wearing a bra, how long it was worn, the wire used in it or the age of starting to wear it, none of these have any relation with the risk of breast cancer.

What do experts say?

According to the report of firstcheck_in, Dr. Shuaib Zaidi, surgical oncologist of Max Super Specialty Hospital, also calls this claim completely wrong. He says that wearing a bra, day or night, does not increase the risk of cancer. He also explained that the flow of lymph in the breast takes place through several routes, so even if there is pressure on one part, the body balances it through other routes.

Cancer cases are continuously increasing all over the world including India. In this connection, a serious warning regarding breast cancer has also emerged. In fact, according to a new report published in the medical journal The Lancet, if concrete steps are not taken in time, breast cancer can become a big challenge for the global system in the coming years. The report estimates that by 2050, the number of new cases of breast cancer in women could reach 3.56 million. The same estimated figures are said to be between 2.29 million to 4.83 million. Not only the cases but also the figures of deaths are worrying, according to the report, global deaths due to breast cancer may reach 1.37 million by 2050. This estimate ranges from 8.41 lakh to 20.2 lakh. At present, about 7.64 lakh deaths are occurring every year, which may increase by 44 percent in the coming 25 years.

Deaths may increase by 44 percent in the next 25 years

It has been said in this research that if the system of prevention, screening and treatment of breast cancer is not strengthened, then by 2050 the number of annual deaths can reach about 14 lakhs. Experts believe that despite progress in medical science, many countries are not prepared to deal with the increasing cases. At the same time, the situation can become more dangerous in countries with weak health infrastructure.

Cases increased in India after 1990

Concern has also been expressed over the situation in India in the report. In India, the burden of breast cancer has increased 5 times in the last 3 decades. Changing lifestyle, urbanization, motherhood in the country, lack of breastfeeding, obesity and lack of early detection have been counted as its main reasons. In India, this cancer has now become one of the most common cancers among women, especially in urban areas. Regarding this, doctors say that a large number of women are identified in the last stage of the disease, due to which treatment becomes difficult and the death rate increases.

Clear difference between rich and poor countries

At the same time, it has also been clearly stated in this report that in high-income countries, the rate of new cases is stable and the death rate has decreased. The reason for this is better screening, timely testing and modern treatment systems. At the same time, an increase in both new cases and deaths is being seen in low and middle income countries. Lack of radiotherapy machines, limited access to chemotherapy medicines and high cost of treatment are major problems in these countries. At the global level, the share of these countries in new cases is 27 percent, but their share in total diseases and premature deaths related to breast cancer is more than 45 percent.

FSSAI Rejects Cancer Claims Linked To Eggs: Nowadays, in the age of social media, people keep posting anything to become famous. However, sometimes it crosses the limit when this post is related to your health. Recently, it was being claimed in a social media post that a banned chemical called Nitrofuran has been found in eggs. People called it cancer. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India has strongly rejected claims linking eggs to cancer. FSSAI clearly stated in its report that the eggs sold in India are completely safe and the recent reports and social media posts are scientifically baseless and spread unnecessary fear.

Use of nitrofuran is completely banned

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had also clarified its position on the apprehensions raised regarding nitrofuran metabolites. These are trace markers that can be found in eggs in case of illegal use of banned nitrofuran antibiotics in poultry farming. According to FSSAI, the use of nitrofuran is completely banned at all stages of poultry and egg production under India’s food safety regulations, hence the claim that eggs contain cancer-causing substances is misleading.

FSSAI stated that the extraneous maximum residue limit of 1.0 micrograms per kilogram for nitrofuran metabolites is only a regulatory limit of detection and not a measurable quantity. Minor presence below the EMRL is neither considered a food safety violation nor poses any health risk.

FSSAI also said that India’s standards are in line with global norms. The European Union and the United States also ban nitrofurans and such reference standards are used only for enforcement, not to set safety limits. The difference in figures in different countries is due to testing techniques, not due to differences in safety standards.

Does it cause cancer?

From a public health perspective, FSSAI clarified that there is no clear cause-effect relationship between dietary intake of very low levels of nitrofuran metabolites and cancer. No health organization in the world has linked normal egg consumption to an increased risk of cancer. Responding to reports related to a particular brand, FSSAI said that such cases are isolated and batch-specific, which often arise due to unintentional contamination or feed-related reasons. These do not represent the entire egg supply chain. FSSAI appealed to consumers to rely on official advice and scientific evidence and reiterated that eggs produced and consumed as per standards remain an energy efficient and safe dietary component.

How beneficial are eggs for health?

If we talk about the health benefits of eggs, then according to the Framingham Offspring Study of 2025, a revelation was made. It was told that people who consume five or more eggs a week have less risk of pre-diabetes, type-2 diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. The biggest reason behind this is the antioxidant protein found in these eggs.

Nowadays many of us are increasingly moving towards packaged and ready-to-eat products. They are convenient to eat and easily available, but recent research has shown that some common preservatives used in some food items can be harmful to our health. Two large studies, conducted in France and published in the British Medical Journal and Nature Communications, analyzed the diet and health data of more than 1 lakh adults between 2009 and 2023. This study was conducted under the NutriNet-Sant group and its objective was to understand whether long-term consumption of these preservatives increases the risk of serious diseases like cancer and type 2 diabetes.

What are ultra-processed foods?

Ultra-processed foods are those that are prepared in factories. These usually contain too much sugar, salt and unhealthy fats, while having very little essential nutrients such as vitamins and minerals. These products also often contain additives such as preservatives, emulsifiers and stabilizers. These are such chemicals which are rarely used in normal household food.

What did the research find?

The research examined 17 common preservatives, which included substances such as potassium sorbate, sodium nitrite and acetic acid. All these are commonly found in packaged foods sold in India. Excessive consumption of potassium sorbate can increase the risk of overall cancer by 14 percent and the risk of breast cancer by 26 percent. Sulfites increased overall cancer risk by 12 percent. Sodium nitrite was found to increase the risk of prostate cancer by 32 percent. Potassium nitrate and acetic acid intake linked to overall cancer and breast cancer.

However, researchers clarified that it is too early to say that consumption of these preservatives is a direct cause of cancer. This requires more in-depth study. But it is definitely believed that these chemicals can increase inflammation and oxidative stress in the body and can affect the intestinal microbiota, which can increase the risk of cancer and other diseases.

Indian Preservatives

The packaged food market is growing rapidly in India. Experts say these findings further reinforce that the modern diet pattern, which is based mostly on ultra-processed food, can be harmful to health. Experts say that based on these results, it is necessary to conduct immediate regulatory review and increase public awareness. He says that ultra-processed foods have already been found to be linked to about 32 health problems including metabolic and mental disorders, untimely death.

How do preservatives cause harm?

Preservatives are added to food items mainly to prevent them from spoiling and to increase their shelf life. But experts say they can also affect the natural structure of food. When this structure is disrupted, even healthy nutrients can have harmful effects. Many preservatives can cause multiple levels of inflammation, oxidative stress and disturbance in the gut microbiota in the body over a long period of time.

What can be done?

Researchers suggest that regulators should strictly monitor and make rules on the use of preservatives. Till then, consumers are advised to eat as much fresh and less processed food as possible. Policy action regarding ultra-processed food has started in many countries of the world. TV and online advertising has been banned in Britain for the safety of children. The US updated its diet guidelines and advised people to prioritize fresh and less processed foods over packaged products.
