Japanese scientists have made a discovery in the world of cancer treatment that can change the direction of medical science in the coming years. Researchers at Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology have developed a bacterial -based therapy, which can directly destroy cancer tumors without the help of immune system. It has been named AUN bacteria cancer treatment.

150 year old experiment to new discovery

While researching cancer, the doctor has been trying to make the immune system weapons for years. At the end of the ‌19th century, Dr. William Koli first used this, which is considered the basis of modern immunotherapy. Its biggest challenge was that patients with weak immune system are unable to benefit from this therapy. Removing this deficiency, JAIST scientists have prepared a technique that is not dependent on the immune system and automatically targets cancer cells.

How AUN therapy works

This therapy has been prepared from the combination of two different bacteria.

A-Gyo- It reaches the tumor and attacks direct cancer cells and their blood vessels.

Un-Gyo- This bacteria controls the activities of A-Gyo to affect the tumor only instead of spreading the infection.

Interestingly, the ratio of both bacteria is different at the time of injection, about 3% A-Gyo and 97% UN-GYO, but as soon as it reaches inside the tumor, the ratio changes to about 99% A-Gyo. Due to this change, the tumor is rapidly destroyed while the science side effects also control.

Big difference from immunotherapy

Existing immunotherapy such as carts or checkpoint inhibitors affect only when the body’s immune system is activated. In contrast, AUN therapy is a completely immune independent. It has been found in the experiment that the tumor in the model with a weak immune system is over. Apart from this, serious side effects like cytokine release syndrome did not appear. They continued to work in a controlled manner. That is, this therapy can become a new hope for those patients who have not got relief from treatment so far. Professor Azero Miyako, who led the research, said that its clinical trial is ready to start in the coming years. Scientists aim that this technology can reach patients in the next 6 years. There is also a plan to make a startup for this.
