Scientists Create Nail Polish For Touchscreens: Many people like to have long nails, but this style sometimes becomes a problem while using a smartphone. Researchers at the American Chemical Society have created a transparent nail polish that can make even long nails work on touchscreens. This research was done at Centenary College of Louisiana, where chemistry student Mansi Desai worked on this technology in collaboration with Professor Joshua Lawrence. This research was presented at the ACS Spring 2026 conference. Scientists searched for substances that, when mixed with transparent nail polish, could make nails a light electrical conductor.

Why do long nails cause problems?

Actually, most of today’s smartphones work on capacitive touchscreen technology. Small electrical fields remain in the screen and when human skin touches the screen, it affects this electrical flow, due to which the phone receives a touch signal. But nails don’t conduct electricity, so the screen can’t detect them. This is the reason why people with long nails have difficulty in using the phone.

What was the result of the research?

To solve this problem, researchers experimented with more than 50 substances and many types of transparent nail polishes. Eventually they got positive results with chemicals like taurine and alcoholamine. In some earlier technologies, carbon nanotubes and metal particles were used, but in this new technology the support of acid-base chemical science has been taken.

What does the researcher say?

According to the researchers, this nail polish helps tiny protons travel between molecules, creating so much conductivity that the smartphone screen can even recognize the touch of the nail. In initial tests this polish was successful in activating smartphone screens. However, this technology is still in its initial stages and is far from coming into the market. Scientists say that at present this polish remains effective only for a few hours because some of the ingredients present in it evaporate quickly, apart from this, investigation is also going on regarding safety and toxicity, Taurine is generally considered safe, but further research is still needed on whether alcoholamine is completely safe for everyday cosmetic use or not.
