Cargo Ship: Every year, hundreds of cargo containers are lost at sea around the world due to storms, bad weather, accidents or improper storage. Even though this incident is rare, it can cause huge economic losses and environmental concerns. According to the World Shipping Council, about 576 containers were lost at sea in 2024. Whenever a container falls into the sea, the biggest economic loss is usually borne by the owner of the cargo.

What happens after a container falls into the sea?

Cargo ships do not stop even after falling containers and do not try to retrieve the fallen containers. Modern cargo ships are not designed to carry heavy containers at sea. Stopping a large ship in bad weather and attempting to remove containers can pose a significant risk to safety and can also disturb the balance of the ship. Because of this the ship usually reports the incident and continues its journey.

Containers may float or sink

What happens to the container depends on the items kept inside it. Containers with light cargo and trapped air can remain floating for days or even weeks. However, containers filled with heavy goods often sink rapidly as soon as they enter water.

Because they are difficult to detect on radar, small ships and fishing boats can accidentally collide with them. Additionally, if a container breaks, the contents inside it can pollute the marine environment. Who bears the financial loss?

Under international maritime law, the financial responsibility of shipping companies is limited. In many cases their liability is limited to approximately $500 per package or shipping unit. This means that even if cargo worth several lakhs or crores is lost, the shipping company may pay only a small part of the actual value.

For this reason, marine cargo insurance is considered essential in international trade. If the owner of the cargo has taken out marine insurance, the insurance company usually compensates for the financial loss as per the terms of the policy.

Strait of Hormuz: India has got a big relief from the recent peace agreement between America and Iran. The first LNG carrier from the Strait of Hormuz has successfully reached the west coast of India. The LNG ship named Disha has reached Dahej Port in Bharuch district of Gujarat. How much time does the ship take to reach India?

The journey from the Strait of Hormuz to the west coast of India is much shorter than other international shipping routes. After crossing Hormuz, ships going towards ports like Kandla, Mundra, Mumbai or Dahej have to travel about 1000 kilometers in the Arabian Sea.

Large oil tankers and LNG carriers typically complete the journey in 48 to 72 hours, depending on weather conditions, maritime traffic and cargo load. Under good conditions, some ships can reach Indian ports in about 33 hours.

Even after the opening of the Strait of Hormuz after the peace agreement between America and Iran, it may take about 6 to 8 weeks for the global and Indian supply chains to become completely normal. According to reports, about 500 commercial ships and cargo carriers are waiting for clearance and safe passage in the Persian Gulf region. Additionally, during the conflict, fears arose over sea mines and other maritime threats in strategic shipping routes. This is the reason why ships are currently being routed through safe corridors instead of using the full width of the route. Indian Coast Guard: 9 people have been rescued from a foreign cargo ship drowning in the middle sea near Kochi. The operation of the Indian Coast Guard is going on to save the rest of the people. This cargo ship belongs to Libya, which is half submerged. The Libya flag was found that the container ship is MSC Elsa 3, which left from Vizhinjam Port on May 23 and was scheduled to reach Kochi on 24 May.

The Indian Coast Guard is doing the coordination and the aircraft rescue over the drowning ship. Out of the 24 crew members on the ship, 9 are in Lifeboat, while a campaign is being carried out to save the remaining 15 people.

DG Shipping has issued instructions to provide immediate rescue services to the ship managers by coordinating with the Indian Coast Guard. The Indian Coast Guard is keeping a strict monitoring on the situation to prevent loss of life or property and loss of environment.

These strict instructions given to people

During this incident, some containers have allegedly fallen into the sea. Meanwhile, the Kerala Disaster Management Authority KSDMA has warned that goods are likely to flow on the Kerala coast and people should not try to touch or find items under any circumstances. People have been instructed to inform the police if they see the container on the sea coast.
