Pib Fact Check: Many social media posts are claiming that caste census is not included in the Central Government’s 2027 census. On Monday night, the Central Government letter Information Office (PIB) described it as misleading and wrong.

Post, PIB posted on the social media platform X, wrote, “The government has already announced that caste calculation will be done along with the 2027 census. Be alert and do not believe in untouchable materials to be broadcast online. Always trust authentic sources for accurate information.”

In fact, the central government has issued a notification for the census on Monday. It has been told in the Gazette that the census process will be completed in two phases. The Union Home Ministry issued an official notification for the census stating that the first phase will start from 1 October 2026, which will include Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, while the second phase will start in the rest of the country from March 1, 2027. The notification states, “… India’s population will be census during the year 2027.”

The notification states, “The reference date for the said census, the Union territory of Ladakh and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, will be except the intercourse areas of the states of Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand. The first day will be at 00:00. “

In a recent cabinet meeting, the Central Government had approved the caste -based census so that the government can make better policies and it is easy to benefit the target people.

3- Union Territory of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand states will start census from 1 October 2026.

4- This time the census will be done in a digital way, so this census will take only 3 years. Meaning the census work will be completed by 2030.

5- At the time of caste census, family information will also be taken on economic basis, in which there is a raw house or a pucca house, a vehicle in the house or not information will be collected.

First and biggest confusion: When will the census be held? Will there be only caste census on 1 October 2026, will it be part of the census, it is being said in the news that the census will start from 1 March 2027. What is 2026 or 2027 census or caste census?

Answer: According to Press Information Bureau, the central government has named it Census-2027. Just as we know the previous census by the name of Census 2011. The census should have been held after 10 years, but it has not happened, now the counting year 2027 of the census has been kept. Meaning the next census will now be 10 years after 2027.

-The process of census 2027 will begin on 1 October 2026 from the states of Hill States-Union Territory Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

-The counting year of the census will be 2027, the process will start in 2026.

On October 2026, the census will start with only caste census, but in that census there will be no caste calculation, such as in census and information about raw house, pakka house, car, push is taken. Just with these information, caste will also be asked.

Consider this line of Press Information Bureau-‘It has been decided to calculate the castes as well as census-2027 in two phases’. Meaning, along with the calculation of castes, that is, what should be taken and the rest of the information should also be taken, then the process that is starting in the hill states from 1 October 2026 is the proper census, just the calculation of castes has also been included in it.

Understand from another example: The last census in India was 2011, it was also done in two phases. The first phase was held from 1 April to 30 September 2010 and the second phase lasted from 09 February to 28 February 2011, but we know the last census by the name of Census 2011.

This time too, the census-2027 will start in October 2026, but the census counting year will remain 2027, just as we know the last time census as Census 2011, similarly we will know the next census by the name of Census 2027.
