Why Non Smokers Get Lung Cancer: Cancer cases are continuously increasing all over the world. According to a study recently published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research (IJMR), India may see a rise in lung cancer cases by 2030. The report states that the North-East region of the country will be most affected, while the pace of cases among women is expected to be the fastest. According to WHO, lung cancer is a serious public health problem. In the year 2022, about 2 crore new cancer cases were reported worldwide and 97 lakh people died. Statistics show that one out of every five people may develop cancer at some point in their lifetime.

When does lung cancer occur?

Lung cancer occurs when lung cells start growing in an uncontrolled manner. These bad cells come together and form lumps or tumors, due to which the normal functioning of the lungs starts getting affected and gradually other parts of the body also get affected.

Which part will see the highest number of cases

According to a new study by ICMR, the rate of lung cancer is likely to be highest in the North-East. The special thing is that here the number of cases among women is almost equal to that of men. In the study, data of 57 populations from six different areas of the country was observed. Among these, Aizawl topped, where 35.9 cases per lakh population were recorded in men and 33.7 in women, and the death rate was also the highest.

Due to this reason cases are increasing

According to a TOI report, excessive use of tobacco is still a major reason in this region. Here, more than 68 percent of men and about 54 percent of women consume tobacco. However, doctors say that now the nature of the disease is changing. According to Dr. Saurabh Mittal, Department of Pulmonology, AIIMS, “We are seeing cases of lung cancer even among non-smoking women, which are linked to exposure to indoor air pollution, biomass fuel, second-hand smoke and work-related pollution.”

Cases increasing in men

The study also revealed that the rate of lung cancer among men is higher in districts like Kannur, Kasaragod and Kollam in South India, whereas the consumption of tobacco and alcohol is relatively less here. In the South, the highest number of cases among women were recorded in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. In northern India, cases were higher among men in Srinagar, while women in Srinagar and Pulwama also saw higher rates despite less intoxication. According to the report, in some areas, lung cancer cases are increasing every year at the rate of about 6.7 percent in women and 4.3 percent in men. The sharpest jump in cases was recorded in women in Thiruvananthapuram and in men in Dindigul.

Lung Cancer In Non-Smoking Women: Cancer cases have increased rapidly in the last few years. Lung cancer, which was earlier called a smoker’s disease, is no longer so. According to government data, a continuous increase in its cases is being recorded among non-smoking women in the metropolitan cities of the country. Doctors of Delhi say that this change is now clearly visible in their clinics also. Let us tell you about it in detail.

What did the government say?

In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, the Union Health Ministry, citing data from the ICMR-National Cancer Registry Programme, said that lung cancer cases have increased in metropolitan cities between 1982 and 2016. The special thing is that adenocarcinoma has now become the most common type of lung cancer in women. This cancer starts from the gland and is most commonly seen in non-smokers. According to statistics, about 53 percent of lung cancer cases in women are of this type, which indicates a major change in the pattern of the disease.

diesel and kerosene fumes

According to a TOI report, this change was announced by Dr. G.C., Chairman and Senior Pulmonologist, PSRI Institute of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine. Khilnani said that earlier, where 80 to 90 percent of lung cancer patients were smokers, now 15 to 20 percent of patients worldwide are non-smokers. In India this figure is even higher. According to Dr. Khilnani, diesel smoke is a proven cause of lung cancer, while kerosene smoke also increases the risk. Apart from this, biomass fuel, passive smoking and overall air pollution further increase this danger.

cancer in women

Other experts also believe that this reflects a silent epidemiological shift. Dr. Kapil Kumar, Senior Director (Surgical Oncology), Action Cancer Hospital, says that adenocarcinoma has now become the leading lung cancer in non-smoking women and environmental and organic factors are more responsible for this than tobacco. He says that urban women are constantly exposed to toxic pollution, but lung cancer is still linked only to smoking. For this reason, the initial symptoms are often ignored and the disease is detected only when it has reached the advanced stage.

Cancer, when we hear this name, one becomes a fear in us. There are reasons behind this, because it is a disease that is very expensive treatment and it is not possible for ordinary humans to spend that much money. This is the reason that cancer has become a major cause of death in the world today. But there is a cancer that is causing the most damage to men. This is lung cancer i.e. lung cancer. This disease is very dangerous because most people get to know about it late. According to statistics, every day thousands of people are losing their lives from this cancer. Let us know why this is increasing, what are its symptoms and how can it be avoided.

Why is lung cancer growing in men?

Doctors say that more cases of lung cancer are seen in men because they smoke more. Cigarettes, bidis and tobacco are the biggest cause of lung cancer. In addition, pollution and poisonous gases also increase the risk of disease.

How fatal is this cancer?

According to the report of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the deaths due to lung cancer are the highest in the world. Every year about 18 lakh people die of this disease, that is, there are about 4,900 deaths every day. The situation in India is also bad because most people get to know this disease on the last stage.

What symptoms be careful when you see?

The early symptoms of lung cancer are very simple, so people ignore them. If you see these symptoms, see a doctor immediately:

Persistent cough or blood cough

Chest pain

respiratory distress

A sudden weight

Frequent lung infections

How can you avoid this cancer?

Leave the smoking completely.

Distance from tobacco and cigarettes.

Wear masks to avoid pollution.

Eat healthy food and get regular checkups.

Lung cancer is becoming the biggest threat to men. But if you take precautions on time and leave smoking, then this disease can be avoided. According to WHO and IARC, quitting smoking can reduce the risk of lung cancer by up to 70 percent. Take this step today because your life is in your hands.
