CBSE Three Language Policy: CBSE recently issued a circular saying that from the session 2026-27, class 9 students will have to study three languages. According to the board, it will be necessary to have at least two Indian languages ​​among these three languages.

If a student wants to study French, German or any other foreign language, then it can be chosen only as the third or additional fourth language. CBSE says that this decision has been taken under the New Education Policy (NEP 2020) and National Curriculum Framework (NCF-SE 2023).

According to reports, parents and teachers from Delhi, Gurugram, Noida and Chennai have filed a petition in the Supreme Court against this decision. The petitioners say that it is not right to suddenly force students to study a new language. He says that many students have been studying foreign languages ​​for the last many years and now changing the language midway will affect their studies. Also, classes 9 and 10 are considered very important for board exam preparation, so additional subjects can increase the pressure on students.

CBSE accused of changing its promise

The petition claims that in April 2026, CBSE had indicated that this rule would be implemented from 2029-30. Schools and families had made their preparations on this basis. But in the new circular issued in May 2026, it was said that it will be implemented from July 2026. The petitioners say that the sudden change in the decision has created confusion among students, schools and parents.

Questions raised on shortage of teachers and books
The petition also states that in many schools there are not enough teachers and books available for new languages. At some places, teachers teaching other subjects have been asked to teach the language. Parents say that implementing the new policy without proper preparation may affect the studies of the students.

Foreign language teachers may also be affected
The petitioners have also expressed concern that the new system may affect teachers and institutions teaching foreign languages. If foreign languages ​​are left out of the main three-language system, the employment of many teachers may also be affected.

Study pressure may increase on students
Parents say that classes 9 and 10 are already challenging for students. At such a time, adding a new language can increase mental and academic pressure. It has also been said in the petition that in the new education policy, it was said to give choice and flexibility to the students, but the current decision is being considered against the same spirit.
