CBSE has announced major changes in the language syllabus of classes 9 and 10. The board has decided to implement the new language system under the National Education Policy 2020 and National Curriculum Framework 2023. This new system will be implemented from the academic session 2026-27.

According to the instructions issued by CBSE, students of class 9 and 10 will now have to study three languages as R1, R2 and R3. The board has clarified that out of these three languages, at least two must be of Indian origin. This rule will be implemented from July 1, 2026.

New rules will apply when choosing a foreign language

Under the new policy, students can choose a foreign language, but for this the remaining two languages will have to be Indian languages. Apart from this, foreign language can also be studied as an additional fourth language.

Changes made as per NEP 2020

The board said that this decision has been taken keeping in mind the new syllabus issued by NCERT and the recommendations of NEP 2020. CBSE says that the new system will help in developing linguistic skills and understanding of Indian languages among the students.

New instructions given to schools

CBSE has instructed all affiliated schools to review the new curriculum, learning goals and capabilities related to language education. The board said that many of the skills associated with language learning such as reading, grammar, writing and oral communication are already aligned with the secondary level curriculum.

At present studies will be done from class 6 books

Until new R3 textbooks become available, Class 9 and 10 students will study from Class 6 R3 books of the chosen language. Schools have also been advised to add local literature, poems, stories and other materials.

Also read – Questions raised on CBSE’s OSM system, Board said evaluation is completely fair and transparent, there will be a chance for rechecking.

Special arrangements to overcome the shortage of teachers

CBSE acknowledged that there may be a shortage of qualified teachers of Indian languages in some schools. In such a situation, the board has given permission to schools to adopt interim arrangements. Under this, schools will be able to provide mutual cooperation, online teaching, services of retired teachers and appointment of qualified post graduate teachers.

Board will provide books in 19 languages

The board informed that R3 textbooks of 19 scheduled Indian languages will be made available to schools before July 1, 2026. Also, guidelines regarding the use of additional learning material will be issued by June 15, 2026.

The Central Board of Secondary Education CBSE has taken a new step to connect the students to the digital platform. Now students from class 9 to class 12 will get a chance to directly register their participation in the official podcast and social media programs of the board. The board says that the objective of this initiative is to make the material related to studies and counseling more students.

Why participation of students is necessary

CBSE has been preparing its in-house podcast and digital content on issues like educational subjects, examination stress, career guidance and counseling for some time. This material is already present on the platform like YouTube. But now the board wants that these podcasts and social media posts should also include the direct voice of students. For this, students will be able to share short videos, audio clips, conversations and experiences.

Which students will get a chance

According to the circular, schools should designate students who are confident, clearly keep their views and feel comfortable on the digital medium. The participation of students in this process will be completely voluntary and for this, written consent of students and parents will be necessary.

Nomination process

CBSE has directed schools to send it through Google form this https://forms.gle/OJBJAYPAYBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB7ifjn9 should send through Google Form. After this, the board will include these students in their digital activities.

Benefits for students

Experts believe that this initiative will give students an opportunity to express themselves. This will promote their creativity, confidence and communication skills. At the same time, he will be able to keep his eyes on subjects related to education and counseling.

Indication of change in education

This step of CBSE shows that the board now wants to be limited not only to conduct the exam, but it wants the student to become part of the education dialogue and their voice reaches the digital platform directly. In the coming days, this initiative will further strengthen the dialogue between both the students and the board.
