The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made many revolutionary changes in its education system and methodology in the year 2025. Regarding school education in India, it has been said for a long time that in the Indian education system, the emphasis is on rote learning and not on understanding. That means lack of practical knowledge and on the other hand fear of board exams.

Everything being decided in a single examination and the pressure of marks has been increasing the mental stress on the students. Keeping these things in mind, CBSE has decided to make some big and important changes in school education, some of the major changes are explained here.

What is the clear objective of CBSE?

The objective of CBSE board is very clear. To reduce exam pressure on students, to inculcate in them the habit of understanding the subject instead of just scoring marks and to prepare them better for future studies and career. In this direction, CBSE has announced reforms like conducting board exams twice a year and increasing the number of competency-based questions.

Board exam twice a year for class 10

To reduce the mental stress of children and increase the quality of education, CBSE has given an opportunity to class 10 students to take the board exams twice a year. This is considered to be the most important decision taken by the board. This decision has been taken under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, so that children are not under the pressure of only one examination and they can get a second chance to improve their marks. This arrangement will be implemented from the academic session of 2026.

Big change in exam pattern

The board has made a major change in the examination pattern and has given more emphasis on aptitude-based questions. This means that now more such questions will be asked in the paper, which test the intellectual level of the students and enable them to understand how students can apply a subject or topic in their real life.

The new system will include multiple choice questions (MCQs) and comprehension based questions. Now it will not be enough to just write the definition or rote answer, rather the students will have to think and answer.

75 percent attendance is mandatory for board exams

Now at least 75 percent attendance will be mandatory for students to appear in the board exams. That is, if the attendance of a student is less than 75 percent in the entire academic session, then he will not be allowed to take the board exam. Its objective is that students remain connected to their studies not just during the examination but throughout the year.

More options to choose subjects in class 11

CBSE has also simplified the process of choosing subjects for class 11. If a student used to study Basic Maths in Class 10, now he can choose Standard Maths as his subjects in Class 11. With this change, students will have more options for further studies and career.

APAAR ID now mandatory

CBSE has implemented a new rule from the board examinations of 2026. Now it will be mandatory for all Indian students studying in CBSE affiliated schools to have APAAR ID.

APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. This will be a digital ID, in which the entire record related to the student’s studies will be kept safe.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is now preparing to bring school education towards students’ interest and career. In this direction, CBSE is planning to implement Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (Stem) subjects in basic and advance for students of 11th and 12th. This change can be implemented from the year 2026-27.

What will be the benefit of this change?

This step of CBSE will bring relief for those students who want to join subjects like science and mathematics, but their interest or future plan is not in technical fields. Such students will now be able to read these subjects at the basic level, while students who make careers in areas like engineering, medical or research can choose them at advanced level.

Students will be studied on the will of students

The objective of this scheme of CBSE is to reduce the burden of studies on students and give them the option to read deeper in the same subjects that have their interest or career plan. That is, now no student will read the difficult topic only because of the fact that he has to be taken under compulsion.

Earlier this experiment was done in 10th

CBSE has already used this type of use. In class 10th, maths were introduced on standard and basic two levels. Students were given the option that if they do not want to take maths in the 11th-12th, then they can choose the basic level. This decision was given positively by students and parents.

Now new start will be from 11th

CBSE plans to first implement this change in 11th grade. However, its final start will depend on the availability of new books of NCERT. Currently, NCERT has released new books from some classes from class 1 to 7 and books for 9th and 11th can be ready by the end of this year.

Schools will also have to make preparations

If this scheme is implemented, schools will have to run basic and advance-level classes separately. For this, teachers will have to train to teach at both levels so that students can get equal facilities in both options.

To suit NEP 2020 and NCFSE

This step of CBSE is in line with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) and the National Curriculum Framework (NCFSE). Its purpose is to give students a better option according to their learning pace, interest and career. This will not be limited to the degree of students only, but the foundation of their dreams will be formed.
