The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made many revolutionary changes in its education system and methodology in the year 2025. Regarding school education in India, it has been said for a long time that in the Indian education system, the emphasis is on rote learning and not on understanding. That means lack of practical knowledge and on the other hand fear of board exams.

Everything being decided in a single examination and the pressure of marks has been increasing the mental stress on the students. Keeping these things in mind, CBSE has decided to make some big and important changes in school education, some of the major changes are explained here.

What is the clear objective of CBSE?

The objective of CBSE board is very clear. To reduce exam pressure on students, to inculcate in them the habit of understanding the subject instead of just scoring marks and to prepare them better for future studies and career. In this direction, CBSE has announced reforms like conducting board exams twice a year and increasing the number of competency-based questions.

Board exam twice a year for class 10

To reduce the mental stress of children and increase the quality of education, CBSE has given an opportunity to class 10 students to take the board exams twice a year. This is considered to be the most important decision taken by the board. This decision has been taken under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, so that children are not under the pressure of only one examination and they can get a second chance to improve their marks. This arrangement will be implemented from the academic session of 2026.

Big change in exam pattern

The board has made a major change in the examination pattern and has given more emphasis on aptitude-based questions. This means that now more such questions will be asked in the paper, which test the intellectual level of the students and enable them to understand how students can apply a subject or topic in their real life.

The new system will include multiple choice questions (MCQs) and comprehension based questions. Now it will not be enough to just write the definition or rote answer, rather the students will have to think and answer.

75 percent attendance is mandatory for board exams

Now at least 75 percent attendance will be mandatory for students to appear in the board exams. That is, if the attendance of a student is less than 75 percent in the entire academic session, then he will not be allowed to take the board exam. Its objective is that students remain connected to their studies not just during the examination but throughout the year.

More options to choose subjects in class 11

CBSE has also simplified the process of choosing subjects for class 11. If a student used to study Basic Maths in Class 10, now he can choose Standard Maths as his subjects in Class 11. With this change, students will have more options for further studies and career.

APAAR ID now mandatory

CBSE has implemented a new rule from the board examinations of 2026. Now it will be mandatory for all Indian students studying in CBSE affiliated schools to have APAAR ID.

APAAR stands for Automated Permanent Academic Account Registry. This will be a digital ID, in which the entire record related to the student’s studies will be kept safe.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has made a big change about the 10th and 12th board examinations. Now students will not get complete freedom in choosing additional subjects. According to the new rules, only 2 additional subjects in class 10 and only 1 additional subject in class 12 will be allowed. Not only this, the subjects selected will have to be studied for two consecutive years, only then the students will be able to give the board exam of that subject. The students of schools which have not taken approval from CBSE for any subject will not be allowed to choose the subject.

Rules on additional subjects

CBSE has also made guidelines for additional (additional) subjects. Apart from 5 main subjects, students of class 10 will be able to take only 2 additional subjects. At the same time, only 1 additional subject will be allowed in class 12.

It will not be enough to choose just the subject. Students will have to study these subjects for two consecutive years. That is, it will be necessary to read both 9th and 10th years for 10th. Similarly, the subject will have to be read in both 11th and 12th years for 12th. Only then will they be allowed to include that subject in the board examination.

School permission and facilities are required

The board has also made it clear that any school can offer the additional subject only when it has permission for the board. Also, the school should have teachers, labs and other necessary facilities for that subject. If a school has not taken approval or does not have resources, then students will not be able to choose that subject in the examination.

Options for students with compartment and essential repeat

If a student fails in an additional subject in his last year and is placed in a compartment or essential repeat category, he can re -exam as a private candidate (private candidate).

Private candidates do not need to join any school. They can study at home and appear directly in the board exam. This option is helpful for those students who want to get a chance again.
