How is a CBSE school opened?

To start a CBSE school, it is first necessary to form a trust, society or organization under Section 8 of the Company Act. No person can directly run a CBSE school in his own name. The school is run only through a registered institution. After this, land has to be arranged for the school and land use approval has to be obtained as per the relevant local rules.

How much land is required for a school?

According to CBSE rules, it is necessary for the school to have fixed land. Generally the minimum land requirement is considered to be around 6,000 square meters (about 1.5 acres), although this may vary according to the location and region. In many cases, different rules may apply for cities and metros. The land should be in the name of the school trust or institution or it should be taken on long-term lease.

How much might it cost to build a school?

According to reports, the cost of building a typical CBSE school with a capacity of around 1000 students can vary depending on its location, land and facilities. The school is usually constructed in three phases, with first 20,000 to 25,000 square feet, then 12,000 to 15,000 square feet, and later an additional 6,000 to 10,000 square feet. The cost of construction and furniture is estimated to be around Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,400 per square foot. Apart from this, separate expenses have to be spent on sports facilities, computers and technical equipment, school buses, marketing, landscaping and other necessary arrangements. This is the reason that according to experts, starting a normal CBSE school may require an investment of around Rs 2 to 3 crore or more at the initial level, whereas with better facilities this cost can increase further.

Why is recognition from the state government necessary?

To start a school, one has to first obtain recognition from the concerned state government or education department. After the school, staff and necessary facilities are ready, inspection is done under the local education department. When all the conditions are fulfilled, the school is given permission at the state level. Only after the approval of the state government, the process of further CBSE affiliation can be started.

Number of CBSE schools is continuously increasing

According to CBSE data, by March 2025, affiliation has been given to more than 30,786 schools in the country and abroad. In the last few years, after the simplification of affiliation rules, there has been a steady increase in the number of new CBSE schools.
