Cancer Drug Shortage: These days, a new concern has emerged for patients and their families suffering from a serious disease like cancer. There are reports of shortage of some essential medicines used in chemotherapy in many hospitals of the country. Doctors say that medicines like Cisplatin and Carboplatin play an important role in the treatment of many types of cancer. Due to this shortage, there are obstacles in the treatment of cancer patients across the country. Let us tell you that both these medicines are considered very important for the treatment of lung, cervix, ovary, and head and neck cancer. At many places, patients and their families are wandering from one medical store to another in search of medicines. The concern of the doctors is that if the medicine is not received on time, the chemotherapy sessions of the patients will have to be postponed or some other method of treatment will have to be found.

Why are these medicines special?

Platinum based drugs like Cisplatin and Carboplatin are considered the backbone of cancer treatment. They are used in the treatment of lung, breast, cervical, ovarian, oral and many other types of cancer. In many cases, these medicines are the main part of the patient’s treatment. But at present there is a huge shortage of them in the country. It is believed that the main reasons for this crisis are the shortage of raw materials (API), increasing manufacturing costs of companies and the impact of supply chains across the world. Also, according to experts, the ongoing tension in West Asia and the huge rise in platinum prices have further increased this problem. Initially the hospitals managed with their old stock, but now that too has been exhausted. Doctors are forced to change the chemotherapy schedule and treatment methods of patients, which is extremely worrying in terms of the patients’ chances of recovery.

Also read: Summer Health Tips: If you work in the sun all day, you may die, take care of yourself in these smart ways.

Paragraph format focusing on statements from doctors and experts

Due to this shortage of medicines, the situation in big hospitals of the country has become very serious. Dr. MD Ray, surgical oncologist of AIIMS, Delhi, said that non-availability of these essential medicines can spoil the entire treatment plan of cancer patients, which can have a negative impact on the survival rate of the patients and increases the risk of the disease returning. At the same time, Dr. Shyam Garg, Chairman of the Medical Oncology Department of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, has warned that the situation is so serious that there is hardly only one or two days’ stock left in the hospital.

The most important thing for patients and families

Doctors say that patients do not need to panic, but it is important to remain alert. If a patient is being treated with these medicines, then he should keep in touch with his doctor and keep getting information from time to time about the availability of the medicine. Under no circumstances should any change in treatment be made without doctor’s advice.

Women often hesitate to talk openly about their reproductive health. This is the reason why many times a serious disease, cervical cancer, is not caught in time and women’s lives become endangered. Cervical cancer is a fatal cancer that starts in the cervix. The main reason behind this is HPV virus. Although this disease is common in India, there is a safe and effective way to prevent it. Which is HPV vaccine. Many people do not know about this vaccine and some people do not even have information related to it. In such a situation, let us know what is HPV vaccine and how it protects your life, what is the best age to get it?

What is HPV vaccine and how does it work?

HPV vaccine is a special vaccine, which provides protection to the body against the HPV virus. This vaccine injects fake virus-like proteins into the body. There is no real virus, but the body recognizes it and starts making antibodies. When the real HPV virus enters the body in the future, the antibodies immediately destroy it. This reduces the risk of spreading infection and reduces the risk of cervical cancer.

What is HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)?

HPV is a very common virus, which can affect the skin and genital area. More than 100 types of HPV are found worldwide, some of which are very dangerous. HPV infection often remains in the body without any symptoms. In some cases it gets cured on its own, but sometimes it can remain in the body for a long time and cause serious diseases like cervical cancer, vaginal cancer, anal cancer and oral cancer. HPV can also cause warts to form in the genital area, which cause discomfort and spread infection.

What is the best age to get it installed?

The best age for girls to get it fitted is 9 to 14 years. At this age the body’s immunity responds best to the vaccine. If the vaccine is not given in childhood then the vaccine can be given till the age of 26 years. The HPV vaccine is also important for men, because they can spread the virus to women. It also helps prevent anal and mouth/throat cancer. The vaccine is not usually given after age 45, because most people have already been exposed to HPV.

Also read –Vitamin Side Effects: Be careful! Taking this vitamin without medical advice may prove costly and may cause loss of eyesight.

How does it provide security to your life?

1. Prevention of cervical cancer – The biggest benefit of HPV vaccine is to protect women from cervical cancer. This cancer starts in the cervix and can be fatal if not treated in time. The vaccine destroys the HPV virus by creating antibodies in the body, which reduces the risk of cancer.

2. Protection from other cancers – HPV can cause not only cervical cancer but also other types of cancer, such as vaginal cancer, anal cancer, oral or throat cancer. HPV vaccine protects against all these serious diseases, thereby keeping your health safe.

3. Protection from genital area warts – HPV virus can also cause genital warts. This can spread infection. By getting vaccinated, the risk of formation of these warts reduces significantly.

4. Herd Immunity – When both girls and boys get the HPV vaccine, it reduces the spread of the virus. This is called herd immunity.

Why Cervical Cancer Is Common In India: Cervical cancer is one of the most serious health problems among women in India. According to the data of Indian Council of Medical Research, every 8 minutes a woman dies of this disease in the country. The saddest thing is that this is one of those cancers which is largely preventable. Dr Vishwanath, senior consultant medical oncologist told TOI that cervical cancer develops slowly. Changes in sales keep happening silently for many years, which can be completely prevented if recognized in time. This is both its challenge and opportunity. Let us tell you how this can be stopped,

HPV vaccine

High-risk human papilloma virus is responsible for most cervical cancers. The HPV vaccine protects against dangerous strains. It is considered most effective at the age of 9 to 14 years, but can also be given up to 26 years. In countries where vaccination has been done on a large scale, a significant reduction in cases has been seen. This vaccine is not a lifestyle, but a step to protect against cancer.

regular screening

This cancer does not give any clear signs in the initial stage. Tests like Pap smear, HPV DNA test or visual inspection can detect changes in cells early. Women aged 30 to 65 years should get regular checkups done as per doctor’s advice. Postponing the investigation thinking that everything seems fine can increase problems.

safe physical relationship

HVP is spread mainly through sexual contact. Regular use of condoms reduces the risk of infection, although it does not eliminate it completely. Sexual activity at a very young age and multiple partners also increase the risk. Awareness and open dialogue is the only way to escape.

distance from smoking

Tobacco weakens the immune system, due to which the body is unable to clear HPV infection. Harmful chemicals from cigarettes have also been found in cervical mucus. Quitting smoking can gradually reduce the risk.

Don’t ignore these signs

Do not take symptoms like bleeding between periods, bleeding after intercourse, bleeding after menopause, foul-smelling discharge or persistent pelvic pain lightly. The results of treatment are much better when identified early. Prevention of cervical cancer is possible, all that is needed is awareness, timely screening and collective cooperation. This major disease can be avoided by having correct information and taking timely action.

Every year on 8 March we celebrate International Women’s Day. This day reminds us of the rights of women, their contribution to society and the importance of their health. Women in the society are busy balancing the responsibilities of family and work. Often in this rush, they forget to pay attention to their health. Especially when a woman crosses the age of 30, hormonal and metabolic changes begin in her body. At this age it becomes very important for women to take care of their health. By getting timely medical checkup done, serious diseases can be detected in the early stages and their treatment becomes easier. So today let us tell you which tests every woman must undergo after the age of 30.

If you are 30 years old then definitely get this test done

1. Cervical cancer screening – Cervical cancer is one of the most dangerous cancers in women. According to WHO report, about 6,60,000 new cases were reported in 2022 and 3,50,000 women died due to this reason. Therefore, after the age of 30, every woman should undergo Pap smear test once in three years. Apart from this, sometimes HPV test is also advised. These tests detect changes in the cells of the cervix and reduce the risk of cancer.

2. Breast cancer screening – Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women worldwide. According to WHO, about 6,70,000 women will die due to breast cancer in 2022. Breast cancer is very easy to treat in its early stages. Therefore, women should develop the habit of checking their breasts themselves from the age of 30. Any lump, swelling or pain can be detected immediately. Regular mammography is also important after the age of 40, especially if there is a family history of breast cancer.

3. Blood Sugar and Cholesterol Test – In today’s fast-paced life, women are managing both home and work. Due to bad lifestyle, stress and eating habits, the problem of diabetes and high cholesterol has started increasing rapidly. If there is a history of diabetes in the family, this becomes even more important. Due to this, serious diseases like heart disease and stroke are detected in time.

4. Thyroid Test – Thyroid problems are common in women due to hormonal changes. It affects the menstrual cycle and can increase the risk of premature menopause. If there is sudden weight gain or loss, constant feeling of fatigue, hair fall or mood swings, then it is very important to get a thyroid function test done. These problems can be prevented in time by getting thyroid checked in regular checkups.

5. Examination of bones – After the age of 35, the bone strength of women gradually starts decreasing. If there is deficiency of Vitamin D and calcium in the body, the bones become weak. Bone mineral density test reveals the risk of osteoporosis. Women who sit in the same posture for a long time or face frequent fractures should get this test done before the age of 30.

Read this also- Early Vascular Aging: Why are the arteries of youth hardening prematurely, is this a silent signal of heart attack?

Give yourself this gift on Women’s Day

Women’s Day is not just a day of respect, but it is also a day to pay attention to one’s health and well-being. Changes start in women’s body after 30 years and timely checkup makes their life safe. In such a situation, Pap smear and HPV test, breast cancer screening and blood sugar and cholesterol test should be done by every woman after 30 years. With regular checkups and caution, women can not only maintain their health but can also become a strong and happy foundation for their family. Therefore, on this Women’s Day, give yourself the gift of health and make health a priority in your life.

A serious and worrying truth related to women’s health is coming to light in India. A disease, about which even today many women are not able to talk openly, is swallowing thousands of lives every year. This disease is cervical cancer, which is called cervical cancer in Hindi.

Statistics show that every eight minutes a woman is dying in the country due to this disease alone. This situation is even more sad because experts say that if testing and vaccination is done in time, then this cancer can be prevented to a great extent.

How serious is the situation?

According to the report of AIIMS and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), every year new cases of cervical cancer are reported in about 1.23 lakh women in India, out of which about 77 thousand women lose their lives. This cancer has become one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in women. Especially its impact is being seen more on women from rural areas and poor families, where there is lack of awareness and health facilities.

What is cervical cancer and why does it happen?

Cervical cancer is mainly caused by infection with a virus called human papilloma virus (HPV). If this virus stays in the body for a long time, it damages the cells of the body, which can lead to cancer. In most cases, its symptoms are not visible in the initial stages, hence women are not able to reach the doctor on time.

Its symptoms which need attention

Symptoms of cervical cancer include abnormal vaginal internal bleeding, bleeding between periods or after intercourse, persistent pain in the stomach or waist, bad smelling discharge, fatigue and weakness. If any of these symptoms persist for a long time, it is important to get tested immediately.

What is its treatment?

Experts say that cervical cancer can be prevented through vaccination and regular checkups. In HPV vaccination, two doses for girls aged 9 to 14 years, three doses for girls above 15 years of age. This vaccine protects against HPV virus. The indigenous vaccine developed in India is being made available free from the government or at the rate of Rs 200–400 per dose in some states, whereas its price is higher in private hospitals. So far, more than 10 crore women have been examined under the National Health Mission.

Now, instead of traditional testing, emphasis is being laid on taking HPV DNA test to primary health centres, so that women from remote areas can also benefit. It has been a big challenge to take the woman to treatment after screening. To overcome this, the government has implemented Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), Hub and Spoke Model, strong system of treatment and follow-up, so that no woman found positive in the test is deprived of treatment.

This disease is also a social issue

Experts believe that cervical cancer is not just a disease but also an issue of social justice. Because its biggest impact is on those women who are unable to reach the hospital due to economic, social or geographical reasons.

Also read: If mouth ulcers are occurring again and again, do not ignore them, this may be an incurable disease.

Every year, more than 1.2 lakh new cases of cervical cancer are reported in women in India. It is the third most common cancer in women. Every year about 70 to 75 thousand women die from this disease, which is about one third of the deaths due to cervical cancer worldwide.

This cancer can be prevented in time, but the most dangerous thing is that its initial symptoms are often not visible. For this reason, there is a delay in its identification and prevention. In this article, we are telling about such signs and reasons, with the help of which we can be alert in time.

What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer is cancer that occurs in the lower part of a woman’s uterus, i.e. the cervix. The cervix is the part that connects the uterus to the vagina.

When the cells in this part start growing abnormally and the body has no control over them, it is called cervical cancer. Its biggest cause is considered to be human papillomavirus i.e. HPV infection, although there are some other reasons behind it too.

HPV infection is the biggest cause

Human papillomavirus i.e. HPV infection is one of the main causes of cervical cancer. This virus spreads through sexual relations. HPV is considered responsible for about 80 percent of cervical cancer cases.

There are many types of HPV, but type 16 and type 18 are considered the most dangerous, because they can cause cancer in the future.

HPV infection is common, but when does the risk increase?

It is important to know that HPV is not a rare virus. Most women are infected with HPV at some point in their lives. The good thing is that in most cases the body’s immunity itself eliminates this virus.

The problem occurs when this virus persists in the body for a long time. In such cases the risk of cervical cancer increases.

Why does having more sexual partners increase the risk?

If a woman has more sexual partners, the risk of cervical cancer increases. This is because it increases the chances of contracting HPV and other sexually transmitted infections.

The virus spreads easily from one person to another due to unsafe sex and frequent change of partners. HPV is one such virus, which can cause cancer if it remains in the body for a long time.

Smoking also increases the risk

Smoking is often linked only to lung cancer, but its effects are not limited to this only. The poisonous chemicals present in cigarettes weaken the body’s immunity.

When immunity is weak, the body is unable to eliminate viruses like HPV. In such a situation, the risk of cervical cancer starts increasing gradually.

Repeated pregnancies also a risk factor

If a woman has had multiple pregnancies, her risk of cervical cancer may increase. This risk is especially seen in those women who have conceived at a young age.

long-term use of birth control pills

Some research suggests that women who take birth control pills for five years or more may have a slightly increased risk of cervical cancer. The hormones present in these pills affect the hormonal balance of the body, which can affect the cells of the neck of the uterus i.e. cervix.

In today’s time, cancer has become the biggest deadly disease. But the good thing is that if it is detected in the early stages, then its treatment can be easy and effective, yet only about 29 percent of the people in India get tested on time, that is, in most of the cases the disease is detected when it has progressed. Experts say that with regular screening, cancer can be eradicated and lives can be saved. So let us know why cancer screening is important and which tests should be done when.

Why is cancer screening important?

The biggest danger of cancer is that it does not show symptoms initially, by the time the effects of the disease start appearing, it has often spread inside the body. If cancer is detected in the first stage, then the treatment is easier, costs less and the chances of recovery are higher. This is the reason why doctors repeatedly say to get checked on time.

What is the situation in India?

Every year about 14 lakh new cancer cases are reported in India. Most of these are detected late. Overall, only 29 percent of cancers are detected in the early stages. In which only 15 percent of breast cancer cases are detected on time. Cervix cancer is diagnosed early in only about 33 percent cases. There itself
Oral and colorectal cancer are caught early in less than 20 percent of cases. These figures show that India is in great need of awareness and regular testing.

Which tests should be done when?

According to the government and health experts, every person should get some important cancer tests done after a certain age.

1. Mouth cancer – All adults above 30 years of age, especially men who consume tobacco or alcohol, should undergo oral examination (VIA/VILI) once a year. In this, the doctor examines the inside of the mouth with acetic acid or Lugol’s iodine.

2. Cervix Cancer – Women ages 21-29 should have a Pap test every three years. Women ages 30-65 should have a Pap test, HPV test, or just the Pap test every three years.

3. Breast Cancer – Women above 30 years of age should undergo clinical breast examination every year. After 40 years, it is necessary to get mammography or ultrasound done every 1-2 years. If someone in the family has had breast cancer, then testing should be started early.

4. Colorectal Cancer – People above 45 years of age are advised to get a colonoscopy or stool-based test done every 5–10 years.

5. Lung Cancer – Heavy smokers aged 55-80 are advised to undergo a low-dose CT scan once a year. This investigation is not necessary for common people.

6. Prostate Cancer – Men above 50 years of age are advised to undergo PSA blood test and digital rectal examination. If someone in the family has had this cancer, then investigation should be started in advance.

Metabolic Syndrome: A recent research conducted in India has given a big warning. In this research, it has been found that the risk of gynecological cancer i.e. cancer of reproductive organs in women with metabolic syndrome is much higher than that of normal women. These include cancer of endometrial, ovary, cervix, vagina and vulva. In such a situation, let us now tell you how the risk of cancer is increasing in women with metabolic syndrome and what has been revealed in the research.

What is metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a group of health problems that increase the risk of heart problems, stroke and type 2 diabetes. It is diagnosed when a woman has at least three symptoms. These symptoms include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, obesity, low cholesterol and increased triglycerides. Experts say that the problem of cancer caused by metabolic syndrome is also increasing among the youth, especially those women who have polycystic ovary syndrome are at higher risk.

What is the connection between metabolic syndrome and cancer?

This research has been done by scientists from Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Reproductive and Child Health Research, Amrita Hospital in Kochi and MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences. It is based on a meta-analysis of 25 research from many countries including India, United States, China, United Kingdom and South Korea. It has come to light that the risk of cancer is much higher in women with metabolic syndrome. It has been seen in research that the risk of endometrial cancer increases almost two times, the risk of ovarian cancer increases three times and the risk of cervix cancer increases almost two times. Apart from this, cross sectional and cohort studies have also found increased risk of all types of gynecological cancers, which makes it clear that metabolic syndrome is an important factor in reproductive organ cancer in women.

Why does the risk of cancer increase?

According to this research, insulin resistance, obesity and chronic inflammation due to metabolic syndrome create an environment in the body that promotes cancer. At the same time, high insulin level causes hormonal imbalance and accumulation of fat in the reproductive organs affects the health of the cells. Apart from this, according to WHO-IARC’s GLOBOCAN 2022 report, about 1.47 million gynecological cancer cases have been registered worldwide. The most common cancers found in India are cervix and ovary cancer. In which about 1.27 lakh cases of cervix cancer were reported in 2022, while in that year 80,000 women lost their lives due to this type of cancer.
