In today’s time, cancer has become the biggest deadly disease. But the good thing is that if it is detected in the early stages, then its treatment can be easy and effective, yet only about 29 percent of the people in India get tested on time, that is, in most of the cases the disease is detected when it has progressed. Experts say that with regular screening, cancer can be eradicated and lives can be saved. So let us know why cancer screening is important and which tests should be done when.

Why is cancer screening important?

The biggest danger of cancer is that it does not show symptoms initially, by the time the effects of the disease start appearing, it has often spread inside the body. If cancer is detected in the first stage, then the treatment is easier, costs less and the chances of recovery are higher. This is the reason why doctors repeatedly say to get checked on time.

What is the situation in India?

Every year about 14 lakh new cancer cases are reported in India. Most of these are detected late. Overall, only 29 percent of cancers are detected in the early stages. In which only 15 percent of breast cancer cases are detected on time. Cervix cancer is diagnosed early in only about 33 percent cases. There itself
Oral and colorectal cancer are caught early in less than 20 percent of cases. These figures show that India is in great need of awareness and regular testing.

Which tests should be done when?

According to the government and health experts, every person should get some important cancer tests done after a certain age.

1. Mouth cancer – All adults above 30 years of age, especially men who consume tobacco or alcohol, should undergo oral examination (VIA/VILI) once a year. In this, the doctor examines the inside of the mouth with acetic acid or Lugol’s iodine.

2. Cervix Cancer – Women ages 21-29 should have a Pap test every three years. Women ages 30-65 should have a Pap test, HPV test, or just the Pap test every three years.

3. Breast Cancer – Women above 30 years of age should undergo clinical breast examination every year. After 40 years, it is necessary to get mammography or ultrasound done every 1-2 years. If someone in the family has had breast cancer, then testing should be started early.

4. Colorectal Cancer – People above 45 years of age are advised to get a colonoscopy or stool-based test done every 5–10 years.

5. Lung Cancer – Heavy smokers aged 55-80 are advised to undergo a low-dose CT scan once a year. This investigation is not necessary for common people.

6. Prostate Cancer – Men above 50 years of age are advised to undergo PSA blood test and digital rectal examination. If someone in the family has had this cancer, then investigation should be started in advance.

Metabolic Syndrome: A recent research conducted in India has given a big warning. In this research, it has been found that the risk of gynecological cancer i.e. cancer of reproductive organs in women with metabolic syndrome is much higher than that of normal women. These include cancer of endometrial, ovary, cervix, vagina and vulva. In such a situation, let us now tell you how the risk of cancer is increasing in women with metabolic syndrome and what has been revealed in the research.

What is metabolic syndrome?

Metabolic syndrome is a group of health problems that increase the risk of heart problems, stroke and type 2 diabetes. It is diagnosed when a woman has at least three symptoms. These symptoms include high blood pressure, high blood sugar, obesity, low cholesterol and increased triglycerides. Experts say that the problem of cancer caused by metabolic syndrome is also increasing among the youth, especially those women who have polycystic ovary syndrome are at higher risk.

What is the connection between metabolic syndrome and cancer?

This research has been done by scientists from Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Reproductive and Child Health Research, Amrita Hospital in Kochi and MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences. It is based on a meta-analysis of 25 research from many countries including India, United States, China, United Kingdom and South Korea. It has come to light that the risk of cancer is much higher in women with metabolic syndrome. It has been seen in research that the risk of endometrial cancer increases almost two times, the risk of ovarian cancer increases three times and the risk of cervix cancer increases almost two times. Apart from this, cross sectional and cohort studies have also found increased risk of all types of gynecological cancers, which makes it clear that metabolic syndrome is an important factor in reproductive organ cancer in women.

Why does the risk of cancer increase?

According to this research, insulin resistance, obesity and chronic inflammation due to metabolic syndrome create an environment in the body that promotes cancer. At the same time, high insulin level causes hormonal imbalance and accumulation of fat in the reproductive organs affects the health of the cells. Apart from this, according to WHO-IARC’s GLOBOCAN 2022 report, about 1.47 million gynecological cancer cases have been registered worldwide. The most common cancers found in India are cervix and ovary cancer. In which about 1.27 lakh cases of cervix cancer were reported in 2022, while in that year 80,000 women lost their lives due to this type of cancer.
