India confirmed 6 months exemption from US sanctions on Iran’s Chabahar port. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Thursday (30 October 2025) said that US sanctions will not apply to India’s Chabahar port in Iran.

10 year agreement was signed with Iran

The government last year signed a 10-year agreement with Iran, under which state-owned India Ports Global Limited (IPGL) promised to invest $370 million in Chabahar, a strategic port for India. This port is very important for India because it provides a direct trade route to Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan.

This announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs has come at a time when India and America are busy finalizing a major trade agreement. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, “We will continue talks with the American side to finalize the trade agreement. Both sides are in continuous talks.”

India got 6 months exemption

America had earlier set September 29 as the deadline to cancel the sanctions exemption on ports related to Iran, but now it has been extended for 6 months. There was talk of developing a terminal at Chabahar port to transport goods to countries like India, Iran, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan.

This project was proposed by India in the year 2023, the objective of which was to strengthen regional connectivity through the International North-South Transport Corridor. This was the first time that India had taken over the management of a foreign port.

India is developing a terminal at Chabahar Port to transport goods to landlocked countries like Iran, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. It was said to be connected to the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC).

Foreign Minister of Taliban government of Afghanistan, Amir Khan Muttaki is currently on a tour of India. Meanwhile, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi has given a big statement regarding India’s relations with Taliban. Owaisi said that India should not be limited to just talks, but should establish full diplomatic relations with Kabul.

Owaisi said in an interview that India should increase contacts with Taliban to protect its national security and political interests. He said, ‘I had said in Parliament in 2016 that Taliban will return to power, hence talks with them are necessary. Today they have a government and their foreign minister is in India, while Pakistan is bombing them. Do you see how this is going? We should maintain full diplomatic relations with Kabul. Owaisi says that India’s presence in Afghanistan is important not only from diplomatic but also from security and geopolitical point of view.

Current relations between Taliban and India

India has not directly recognized the Taliban government since their occupation of Afghanistan. However, India is maintaining limited talks with the Taliban regime in the name of humanitarian assistance. After the Taliban capture of Kabul in 2021, India closed its embassy, but later sent a technical team there, which is playing a role in humanitarian aid and communication. India is cautious that its national security should not be affected by the activity of terrorist groups in Afghanistan, but Owaisi believes that maintaining distance will reduce India’s influence and increase the dominance of China and Pakistan in the region.

India benefits from Chabahar Port: Owaisi

Owaisi also mentioned Iran’s Chabahar port in his statement. He said that India should develop a new route from this port to Afghanistan. According to Owaisi, Chabahar is strategically important for India. If India builds a direct route from there to Afghanistan, its position will be stronger than China and Pakistan. India is already investing in developing Chabahar Port to reduce its dependence on Pakistan’s Karachi Port. Owaisi says that if India increases economic and strategic partnership with Afghanistan, it will strengthen its position in the entire region.

Rethinking India’s role in Afghanistan

After the withdrawal of Taliban in Afghanistan, India’s policy has been wait and watch. India has not given official recognition to the Taliban regime in any form, but has maintained contacts through humanitarian assistance, food aid and health programmes. However, experts say that maintaining complete distance from Taliban may cause loss to India. At the same time, leaders like Owaisi are arguing that India should re-establish its influence in Afghanistan.

Deteriorating relations between Taliban and Pakistan

Owaisi also commented on the relations between Pakistan and Taliban in his statement. He said that Pakistan, which was once a supporter of Taliban, is now bombing them. This shows that there are no permanent friends or enemies in international politics. India should take advantage of this situation and strengthen its presence in Kabul. This statement has come at a time when tension is at its peak regarding the Durand Line on the border of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and the Taliban has intensified attacks on Pakistani posts.

Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, who is visiting India, while talking to the media on Friday (October 10, 2025), supported trade through Chabahar port route and called for opening the India-Pakistan Attari-Wagah border for trade with India.

At a press conference at the Afghanistan embassy after his meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, Muttaki announced that the Taliban will appoint diplomats to India. He said that Pakistan does not allow India to export to Afghanistan through land route and the Indian government has been using Iran’s Chabahar port for trade and commerce with Afghanistan.

However, the US last month revoked the 2018 sanctions waiver, under which India was allowed to develop ports and reach Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan.

‘There should be no politics in business’

Muttaki said that the purpose of business is to benefit the people and it should not be linked with politics. Addressing a press conference at the Afghanistan Embassy, Muttaqi said, “Pakistan and India should open the Wagah border to facilitate trade between Afghanistan and India. This will benefit the people of all three countries.”

‘Will not allow America to take control of Bagram Airbase’

No female journalist was invited to this press conference. He also announced the formation of a trade committee to remove obstacles in trade relations with India. Muttaki also reiterated Afghanistan’s position that it will not allow America to take control of Bagram Air Base, although it is open to diplomatic relations with Washington.

While addressing the media, Muttaqi placed a small flag of the Taliban-appointed Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA) on the table. He told reporters that the embassy building, on which the flag of the former Islamic Republic still flies, belongs to the IEA.

Iranian President Masood Pageiyan has announced to strengthen friendship with Islamabad in his first visit to Pakistan. During this visit, there were several important agreements between Pakistan and Iran to increase trade and technical cooperation. Under this, Pakistani traders will now be able to send goods to Europe and Russia by the ground route of Iran. According to experts, this will be a faster and affordable option than on sea ships.

It is believed that this supply will be through the International North-South Transport Corridor (Instc), which starts from Mumbai port of India and goes to Russia and Europe via Iran. India and Russia are developing this corridor together, in which the Chabahar Port manufactured by India will have a central role.

China’s eye on connecting CPEC with Instc
China also wants to connect its CPEC project with the Instc so that its impact can increase further to Central Asia and Gulf countries. China wants to reduce its dependence on Malacca Strait, where the military presence of India and America is strong. China can give a strategic edge with this possible connection.

Target to take business up to $ 10 billion
Iran and Pakistan have decided that they will increase mutual trade from $ 3 billion to $ 10 billion. This decision is being considered a big step towards giving new heights to the economic relations of both countries.

Pakistan’s dual strategy
To welcome the Iranian President, Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif himself broke the protocol and reached Noor Khan Airbase. This is part of Pakistan’s strategic efforts, so that it wants to strengthen the relationship with Iran, making America happy. Apart from this, Pakistan wants Iran to control Baloch rebels working from its area, about which Pakistan claims that they get support from India.

Consent on Islamabad-Tehran-Estambul rail route
The 6,540 km long rail line has been agreed between Pakistan and Iran to Istanbul in Turkey via Tehran to Tehran. This journey will now be completed in only 10 days, which used to take 21 days from the first sea route.

The division of the railroad is as follows – 1990 km in Pakistan, 2603 km in Iran and 1950 km in Türkiye. This project started in 2009 but has not been completed yet. Now there is a plan to activate it again.

Danger bell for India – link to Gwadar and Chabahar
Pakistan is planning to connect Gwadar and Chabahar Port. Chabahar Port is built by India, while Gwadar is a project of China. Pakistan has proposed to connect the Iranian President with the silk route and has also negotiated on the Gwadar-fourth maritime trade. China is also building a naval base at Gwadar Port, which may increase security -related threats for India.

Israel Iran Tension: The battle between Israel and Iran is now seen reaching a dangerous turn. Both countries are targeting important establishments there by attacking each other in a tremendous manner, trying to harm more and more. Ratars’ reports even said that Iran has now targeted the Israeli stock exchange and some hospitals there. It is being said in the report that more than 25 missiles have been fired by Iran, after which now Israel is also in the mood for counter action soon.

India’s investment on risk from stress

In this Surat-e-Hal, India’s about $ 550 million, or Rs 4771 crore, has been at stake, which it had invested in Iran. Most of the investment was made by India by focusing on the Chabahar port, which matters a lot for New Delhi. The company that manages this Chabahar port from India is named Global Limited, India Ports.

Through this Chabahar port, India reaches from Afghanistan to Central Asia without Pakistan. Chabahar Port gives India an alternative trade route from Iran, Afghanistan, Central Asia to Europe, which can be reached in a very short time.

Why Bharti’s challenge increased?

But now that tension between Iran and Israel is at its peak, this Chabahar project may be affected. Due to the ever -increasing intervention of America and restrictions from West countries, it will be difficult for India to work on this Chabahar port and railway project connected here.

The Shahid Beheshti port terminal of Iran’s Chabahar Port has been tied up to run for 10 years in May 2024. Negotiations are going on continuously on behalf of the officials of India and Iran, so that there is no obstruction. Invested $ 8.5 million to develop this port from India. In the year 2017, groups like Essar and Adani for Chabahar Port also showed interest. Chabahar Port is of special importance for India.
