Three Indian Army officers had a narrow escape in a helicopter crash in the mountainous Tangaste area near Leh in Ladakh. This helicopter, which was part of the old Cheetah fleet, had a Lieutenant Colonel, a Major and a Major General on board. This accident happened on May 20, which was confirmed by the officials this morning (May 23).

This single-engine helicopter was being piloted by a Lieutenant Colonel and a Major General, while Major General Sachin Mehta, General Officer Commanding of the 3rd Infantry Division, was traveling as a passenger. All three officers were injured. After the accident, the selfie of Major General Mehta and two other officers has gone viral on social media.

Questions raised regarding Cheetah helicopter

In the picture he is seen sitting on the rocks near the badly damaged helicopter. Considering such mountainous environment and the condition of the old Cheetah helicopters, their survival is considered a miracle. An official investigation into the cause of the incident has been ordered.

The Leh accident has further increased concerns about the safety of Cheetah helicopters. This latest accident has once again sparked debate about the safety of Cheetah helicopters. They were first assigned to the army in the 1970s. These helicopters, which were also part of Operation Meghdoot to fight Pakistani troops in the Siachen Glacier in 1984, have been involved in several accidents over the years.

Order for 6 LUH helicopters

Many pilots have also lost their lives in these accidents. This fleet is now being gradually retired and replaced by indigenous light helicopters (LUHs) Naval Utility Helicopters (LUHs), built by state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).

According to reports, the Army has ordered 6 LUH helicopters, which are designed to reach a maximum speed of 220 kmph, a service ceiling of 6.5 km and an operational range of 350 km. The 5-seat Cheetah helicopter is considered one of the best high-altitude helicopters in the world.
