Union Govt. Proposal for 113 km long canal: After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on...

Union Govt. Proposal for 113 km long canal: After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April, after the suspension of the Indus Water Treaty, the Central Government has proposed to construct a 113 km long canal to transfer water from Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan to crave the water drop by drop to Pakistan. At the same time, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has said not to support this proposal.

The Central Government has made a comprehensive proposal to prevent India’s water from flowing in Pakistan. Under this proposal, a feasibility study is being done to transfer surplus water from Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. This project may reduce the flow of water in Pakistan.

Central government will work on connecting canals to 113 km long tunnel

Under the proposal, the Central Government proposed to connect the existing canal structure through several tunnels at various places in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab. This proposed 113 km tunnel is expected to be launched by giving priority to 13 places for necessary connections with existing canals. The plan to divert water from the Indus river system is focused on three rivers including Jhelum, Chenab and Sindhu which flow in Pakistan. According to sources, the new canals will turn the extra water in the other direction.

The canal connecting Chenab to the Ravi-Vyas-Satire system will be ready in three years

Sources in ABP News have said that according to the current proposal, canal construction work connecting the Chenab river to the Ravi-Vyas-Satilaj system can take at least three years.

According to sources, the water of the Indus river can be transported to Ganganagar in Rajasthan through canals within three years, so that Pakistan will have to struggle for water. The Jammu Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Central Government regarding this proposal. According to the Chamber of Commerce, this proposal can prove to be a game changer for Jammu and Kashmir.

The Center’s proposal also included the target of connecting the canal with Yamuna

The proposal also aims to connect it with Yamuna and if it happens, the canal length will be up to 200 kilometers. Sources said that it is also proposed to double the water capacity of Ranbir Canal, which draws water from the Chenab river in Jammu. The length of this canal can be increased from 60 kilometers to 120 kilometers. Apart from this, efforts will be made to use Pratap Canal at full capacity on the basis of feasibility report.

Many projects will work fast to control water

Cleaning and flushing the reservoirs of Bagihar and Salal projects built on the Chenab River in Jammu region will also be done so that the flow of water can be controlled as much as possible. Sources said that apart from this, work on Pakal Dul, Kiru, Ratle and Quar projects on the Chenab river in Kishtwar will also be intensified.

If there is no water in the taps of Jammu and Kashmir, then why should we give water to others, Omar Abdullah

At the same time, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has raised many questions about this proposal. Talking to the media in Jammu, in response to a question on the proposal of the central government to bring the water of Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab and Rajasthan, he said that we will not allow this to. He said that first let us use our water for ourselves, then we will talk about the rest. There is a drought in Jammu, there is no water in the taps of Jammu. Why should I send Punjab water?

Jk Government is working on two things to use water- Omar Abdullah

Omar Abdullah said that the government is working on two things to use Jammu and Kashmir water in Jammu and Kashmir. He said that work should start on one Tulwul Navigation Barrage and another should be pumped from Akhnoor to Jammu city.

After the terrorist attack in Basaron in Pahalgam in Kashmir Valley on 22 April, 26 civilians, including 25 tourists and a local citizen, were killed. After this, India suspended the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan and took many other steps against the neighboring country.

Pakistan Chenab River Water Level: Pakistan is currently going through the most severe water crisis...

Pakistan Chenab River Water Level: Pakistan is currently going through the most severe water crisis in history. The biggest reason behind this is believed to be a huge cut in water received by India under the Indus Water Treaty. According to local water experts, the flow of Chenab river flowing from India has decreased by 92%, causing crops in large agricultural areas like Punjab and Sindh to be on the verge of havoc.

Water in Chenab river also below ‘dead level’
According to reports, on May 29, the Chenab river flow was 98,200 cusecs, which is now only 7,200 cusecs. The water level has fallen so much that it has gone below the ‘dead level’, due to which more than 40% of the kharif crops have dried up and the rest is also facing a crisis.

6.5 crore people affected, farmers will travel to Islamabad
About 6.5 crore people from Punjab and Sindh depend on Chenab for irrigation. Farmers’ organizations, troubled by water scarcity and wastage of crops, have now warned of Islamabad. Farmer leaders say that the government is not giving any relief and no clear diplomatic steps were taken against India.

Loss of Rs 4,500 billion, ground water also ends
According to the data of the agricultural organization ‘PRA’ and irrigation department, Pakistan has so far lost Rs 4,500 billion due to lack of rain and water supply. The ground water level has also fallen severely and thousands of tubewells have dried up.

Dam also dried, feared food crisis
The water level of major water sources like Mangla Dam has also gone below the danger line. Experts believe that if this situation persists, Pakistan may face a serious national food crisis.

Water requests from India: Pakistan sent four letters
Pakistan has sent four formal letters to India so far to restore the Indus Water Treaty and supply water. According to NDTV report, one of these letters was sent after “Operation Sindoor”. All these letters were sent by Syed Ali Murtaza, Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources of Pakistan, to the Ministry of Water Power, which was later sent to the Ministry of External Affairs (Mea).

Farmers’ anger over ‘Green Pakistan’
The farmers of Punjab and Sindh are describing projects like ‘Green Pakistan’ by the government as a paper fraud, saying that “there is no greenery of paper, but water is needed in the fields.” Farmers allege that the government is only focusing on showy schemes, while the real need is to improve the irrigation system.

India-pakistan tension: India has taken another action against Pakistan after suspending the Indus Water Agreement....

India-pakistan tension: India has taken another action against Pakistan after suspending the Indus Water Agreement. Now India has stopped the water of Chenab river through Bagalihar Dam. Similarly, the Jhelum is planning to take tough steps about the Kishanganga dam on the river. A source said that the Bagihar Hydroelectric Dam in Ramban, Jammu and the Kishanganga Hydroelectric Dam in North Kashmir have the ability to regulate the time of release of water.

India decided to suspend the decades-old treaty after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir. 26 people were killed in this attack, mostly tourists. The Indus Water Treaty, which was conducted by the World Bank’s mediation, has controlled the use of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan since 1960.

Controversy over Baggihar Dam

The Bagihar Dam has been a matter of long dispute between the two neighbors. Pakistan has demanded the World Bank’s mediation in this matter. Pakistan also has objections due to its influence on Neelam, a tributary of Jhelum, especially about the Kishanganga dam.

History of Indus Water Agreement

The Indus Water Agreement, signed by Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru and President of Pakistan Ayub Khan in 1960. It was a historical agreement made in the World Bank’s mediation. Its aim was to avoid the future conflict between India and Pakistan over water resources. Under this treaty, India got the right to Ravi, Sutlej, Beas. The control of Indus, Chenab, Jhelum was assigned to Pakistan. However, India got limited irrigation, power generation and domestic use exemption.

Pakistan’s lifeline Indus?

The mainstay of Pakistan’s water-based economy is the Indus river system. With its help, Pakistan uses 93% of Western rivers water. 80% agricultural land depends on this water. The livelihood of millions of people, water supply network of cities and hydro power production rests on this system. So when India indicated the postponement of the Indus Water Agreement, there was a panic and resentment in Pakistan’s political and military leadership.
